Wow, talk about a bad free agent signing.  In those days, Sox had to give up a #1 pick, too.

He’s looked and performed much better since the Arizona trip, but unfortunately keeps getting knocked out for a few days bc of hbp’s. I’d like to see him get on a nice uninterrupted run before calling him up here to make sure the adjustments he made have really settled in.

If they do bring up Montgomery, I am assuming he will play SS?

With Robert jr. traded and Vaughn in purgatory I was looking at possible defensive positioning options.

1B: Elko/Vargas/Sosa

2B: Meidroth/Sosa/Baldwin

SS: Montgomery/Meidroth/Baldwin

3B: Vargas/Sosa/Baldwin

Catcher: Teel/Quero

DH: Teel/Quero/Benintendi

LF: Benintendi/Taylor/Baldwin

CF: Taylor/Baldwin

RF: Tauchman/Taylor/Baldwin

Reserves: Rojas/Slater/Palacios

Most of me thinks he definitely hasn’t earned it but a little bit of me thinks he needs a clean slate (statistically) mentally. Being promoted to the MLB kinda gives him that. And if he’s terrible, he can just be sent down again.

I agree with you, kind of no harm no foul.

This looks right, except Rojas will somehow start.

To add to this, they’ve already used the option for this year sending him down after Spring Training anyway. So you can call him up and send him down again if you want to.

This vividly shows how far the “new and improved” White Sox still have to go.  What we confidently have going forward is a SS, 3B and 2 Catchers.  On the pitching side, several ¾ starters.  1st Base is TBD.
Or, put another way, we still need 2 top-of-rotation starters, 4 front-line relievers (we have none on the 26-man, really), a 2B, 3 Outfielders, and possibly a 1st baseman.  And, of course, a bench.
I’m optimistic that some of the gaps can be filled with guys already in the minors (pitching, 2B perhaps). I think we’ll spend $ when it makes sense to do so (it made no sense to spend in 24 or 25).   I’m still leery of the quality of the drafting and when will we get back into the international game?

I'm 100% in agreement with this.

Although, at this point how do you take Meidroth off SS?  He has looked really good, unless some underlying metric says otherwise.

Yea I really don't know how you take him off SS. He's playing an above average MLB SS. There is no guarantee Colson is even in the same ballpark at SS. I'd give Colson probably another month to cook down in AAA and let Meidroth continue to play SS everyday in Chicago for now.

True. Unless you play Colson at 3B but that probably pushes Vargas back to 1B and Elko to AAA.

His arm at SS looks weak for the position to me  but his OAA and his fangraphs defensive rating are both very good.

I dont know how much of those stats are for his 2B vs SS performance but yeah Colson is likely to be a butcher at SS by comparison, so 3B is long term home for the latter.

Still, I dont think it hurts to give Colson several games at SS just to have some tape to evaluate him at SS on before they make a decision. They can switch off for awhile.

Vargas metrics are bad at 3B and would be better at 1B.

Colson at 3B might work. Rojas is kind of meh. Leave Chase where he is.

I'm 100% for that plan. I don't know what the arm strength metrics are, maybe it's just max velocity and by that measure Chase is below average for a SS -- but he gets in such great fielding positions that it really doesn't matter that much. Only time it burns him is on the occasional double play where he's flat footed at 2B. He has certainly passed the eye test and the metrics test so far. He's made 95% of the plays needed of all sorts, that's all you can ask from a SS.

Are you sure ? I don't know so I'm only asking. How can an option be used if he's never been called up ? Once you are called up wouldn't that be using his 1st option and then you can  send him up and down that same year if you want.

I think with the guys they consider key pieces like Montgomery they want him to bust down the door like Teel did with a run of superior hitting so he's less likely to be yo-yo'd.

Getz hasn't lived up to the Sox fans saying since spring training that Getz was itching for Montgomery to be the opening day starter or just promote him ready or not here he comes like a game of hide and seek.

I think he knows that Colson has to stick to those old sports cliches  about letting the game come to him and staying within himself to be a future contributor. Maybe breathing through his eyelids too. Name that pop culture reference !
