Houser

Featured Replies

Houser pitched another good game today. I looked up his yearly stats and I think its easy to say he'd having a career year. He's also a free agent after this year. Needless to say I think there is a good chance he will be traded at the deadline. I would think he would bring back something decent in return. Getz got Vargas in a deadline trade and that has worked out quite well for the White Sox. The team still needs 2 or 3 more good hitters. There are too many outs in the lineup. The team couldn't hit last year and it can't hit this year. Something needs to be done so this doesn't happen again next year. There have been reports that the new owner is going to start spending money in the off season. Hopefully  the money will be spent on some free agent hitters.

It's tough to pry position players away at the trade deadline it seems. But yeah, it seems like you'll be getting something interesting for Houser.

He's useful in a package with Robert. Some team would get a plug and play 5th starter and if nothing else an elite defensive OF that seems rather healthy.  But he doesn't have much value. We'll be lucky to get a nice lotto ticket back like we traded away in that deal for whatshisname.

Fedde+Kopech got them a player that the Dodgers gave up on, and Fedde had another year remaining on his deal

Doubt Houser gets you anything worth mentioning

It's too bad we are spending ZERO money because if you offered him like 1 +player option at 8 and 12 million it wouldn't be the worst idea in the world. Dude isn't great, but he's a perfectly cromulent 5th starter. Obviously there's the downside risk but the sox piss away 8 million on three different below replacement guys every offseason regardless. I'd rather take a small gamble on a flip candidate that would also provide some watchable games once and awhile.

While Fedde was matching Crochet in WAR, I think other teams were looking at him as "just a guy". Somebody the Sox struck gold with, and they weren't paying a premium for the Sox' luck. Houser seems to be the same kind of guy, pitches to contact, gets you 6. Kopech was just broken, and fixable. I'd imagine that in a lineup where he doesn't have to be "the man", Robert could relax and just be the crazy 7th hitter.

Robert/Houser could bring back Jordan Walker, Oswald Peraza, Brett Baty? Plus, a couple off the radar guys?

I think it might depend. Half a season of Giolito and Lopez returned Quero, a top 100 prospect who appears to be a pretty good player, as well as Ky Bush who I think can still be a pretty good starter, he definitely has talent if he isn't walking 1 guy per inning.

That was a rare situation though, a sad attempt to impress and retain Ohtani, and both of those pitchers have a clearer track record than Houser. I don't think you're getting back a top 100 prospect for Houser, but there are plenty of teams who will desire starting pitching if they think it's the difference between the playoffs or not. Or if they're the Dodgers and all of their pitchers are permanently on the disabled list (playing for the Dodgers is arguably a disability in and of itself).

I think you can do better than a lotto ticket, or if it's a lotto ticket, I like Eddy's suggestion of a Jordan Walker type player. Although I personally like the Cubs glut of outfielders, I don't know how they have room for both Alcantara and Caissie if they decide to re-sign Tucker, and they could probably use another pitcher or two. I'd really like to get Alcantara somehow.

Only in a fantasy world.............but it will be interesting.

How long will it extend the window on the way to be competitive?

Why only in a fantasy world? Walker's out of options after this year. He's in the same position as Vargas or Sosa next spring - roster him or cut him. If the Cards see themselves as being in a small window, maybe Robert extends that a year.

Luis Robert is a replacement level player for us right now. I'm delusional enough to believe this team could be "competitive" in 2027. Keeping Houser doesn't do anything for us. And Robert truly seems like he's a change of scenery candidate.

robert and houser for Walker, and a couple of their lower level pitchers.

It's all we got.

Better hurry up before he turns back into a pumpkin…it’s been 5 starts, let’s not overreact. He’ll get moved for something because a team will always be looking for an arm to eat innings, but it will be for a nothing prospect or 2. No team is trading for Houser thinking he’ll be in their playoff rotation

Trevor Rogers was ass for the Marlins last year and brought back Norby and Stowers. Norby was top 100. Not saying that level of panic trade is in the cards for us, but just Stowers for Houser (Stowers was NOT top 100) would be an amazing steal. I do realize that Rogers came with multiple years of control, but he still was pretty humdrum for the Marlins. Baltimore traded for the memory of the '21 season.

A few weeks ago this dude was free to the entire MLB and had to take a job with the Sox to get on a MLB roster, but in a few more weeks gets a real return?  Pass whatever it is because I need some too.

That's why we should try to extend him now.

100%.

Mmmm nah. If you want to re-sign him on a one year deal in the offseason, try then. But trade him next month.

I think they could get someone that would slide into the teens of our top 30, assuming he keeps performing.

While I don’t think they’ll get anything interesting for him, I can understand better teams preferring to acquire him for a lottery ticket prospect later in the season when they’re ready for him to eat innings rather than signing him earlier and clogging up a roster spot when the need might not be as critical.

I hate to say it, but the Sox pro scouting has been a lot more productive recently than the amateur scouting.
Houser has some value but not Fedde's value.

2 targets from last year who are rebounding are Crawford of the Phillies and Spencer Jones.  Crawford's numbers are good across the board, except for lack of power.   Jones is an intriguing gamble  because the Sox have zilch in the way of power hitters.  Jones' numbers are also way up, except for 34% Ks (even that is slightly improved).  I don't think either is a top 100 prospect anymore, but not sure that anyone the Sox would look to trade could nab one of those guys either.

Lottery ticket?  Maybe if he keeps this up and doesn't strike midnight.
