Colson Montgomery has arrived

Colson could be one of those guys with a low-ish BA and big power numbers.  If he's a perennial .240+, 35+ HR, 90+ BRI player with decent defense, I think we'd be pretty happy.  As others have mentioned, his health is probably the biggest concern.  One significant back injury and he's a flash in the pan.

He is a big guy( 230 lbs) playing SS. If he starts having back issues, SS is not a place for him and maybe move to a position with less physical stress like IB.

His HR prowess has been incredible. It will be interesting to see where he winds up power wise, but if he's at 35-40 homers, a lot of other things can be mediocre at best and he still would be  a pretty valuable player.

I don’t think people realize how well his defense is grading out

Im not surprised. The kid is a top shelf athlete so where he may lack top end foot speed he makes up for it with agility and smooth transitions.

I get both your points, which are different obviously. I just can't understand how people that GET PAID TO EVALUATE ATHLETES kept harping on "oh he's a 3B". Bro it took me one fucking game watching him at SS to see he easily passes the eye test. Like wtf?

And watching him more and more it's obvious dude is a fine MLB SS until he ages out, maybe in 5-6 years.

Which is why it was so insane to put him at 3B a few weeks ago.  They’re doing the same with Bonemer now which makes no sense to me either.

Was wrong about Colson at SS but still not buying Meidroth as a starter minus some major power gains in the offseason.

The other problem is bulking up at that size isn't going to help his to increase his range or arm strength...Meidroth at 2B and Sosa 1B just doesn't compare well to other combinations around the majors.

No matter where Sosa ends up being used, keeping him far away from 1B is crucial.

As a DH, he would be tied for 20th out of 24 qualified in WRC+ at 101.

Pretty much has to be at second.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking.  If Colson ends up being the long term SS, that pushes Meidroth to 2B.  But, Sosa has a better bat, so Meidroth essentially becomes a bench guy who can play SS and 2B well.  Not a bad guy to have on the bench, and with Colson's health history, he'd be pretty valuable to play 3-4 times a week between the two positions.

I am at least going to say, if you really think someone isn't a SS for measurable reasons,  playing them elsewhere while they are in the minors is a good idea.  Let them learn at the lower levels.

Sox need Colson to be an annual 5-6 WAR player for the rebuild to be a success. The Sox need a bona fide stud with power to build the offense around. One of the many reasons that the previous rebuild failed so spectaulary is that none of the top offensive prospects ( Eloy, Moncada, Robert) came close to being a top 10 player in baseball.

Lots of pressure on this kid moving forward..

More than anything,  they need to keep him healthy.   I hate them playing him with an injury in a meaningless season.  Get him healthy.

Not that I disagree with you, but how someone is going to age is probably taken into consideration when making statements like that.

A 6'4 230 LB dude with back issues probably isn't destined to stay at SS long term.

Dude was a QB, and a really good one, for the record.

Im not doubting his athletic prowess, but that still doesn't mean he's a long term SS at the MLB level. He should be there until proven he can't though.

You see a lot of 1st round guys drafted SS or OF.  (more athletic)

I still don't understand why any team would take their worst defensive player and put them at 1B.  They handle the ball more than anyone else which means greater chance for error.

Because first base generally sees the least amount of balls hit to them and rarely has to make difficult throws.
