I would rather see the WSox trade Shane Smith than Houser. If a team shows interest in trading for Houser, offer Smith instead.

Houser is a free agent after this season.  While Houser has had an insane stretch to start this season, he is the exact definition of league average coming into this year.  A 4.21 career ERA with a 100 ERA+.  His last three years are a 4.76 ERA and a 86 ERA+.  You quite literally take the best offer you get for him and count your lucky stars to get it for a dude who was unemployed less than 2 months ago.  The odds that the Sox (or really anyone) pulled an Esteban Loiaza on him are so small, that it is almost insignificant.  And even if you truly believe that he is "fixed", he is a free agent in 3+ months.  You gain nothing by keeping him around, as you still would have to negotiate a free agent contract with him after the World Series, which you can do whether you own his rights or not.

Unless someone get absolutely stupid, there is no reason at all to trade Shane Smith.

Maybe try to sign Houser on a one or two year deal because, yes, he has proven over 8 starts or so that he is potentially a top of rotation starter. Great pitching over that stretch where he has demonstrated the kind of focus in tough game situations/counts, that an ace pitcher has. He is great now and will no doubt be great next year.

Shane Smith's last few starts have not only called his pitching into question, but also his endurance and maybe his physical fitness. He was reported to be 240 lbs but I would not be surprised if he is over 250 now.  Maybe try out for the Bears at that size. He is an All Star this year. I would sell high on him.

See I find this wild because of this:

Shane Smith career ERA 4.20 ERA+ 99

Adrian Houser career ERA 4.20 ERA+ 100

Even better: One of these guys has 5 years of control, the other is a FA is 3.5 months.  These are their first eight starts of 2025.  The second one has a 3.09 FIP.  They are the same guy.  Maybe we should wait for more than 8 starts before throwing money at Adrian Houser?

Under the same logic, it seems to me that it is too early to trade him. He is pitching like a stud/ace.  Sign him on a short term deal and he might be worth even more in trade next year. Right now he is our ace, our stopper and a valuable veteran presence in the staff.

So a dude with 17 starts you are ready to write off and trade, but a dude with 160 major league appearances and 112 starts is OK to extend because of 8 starts in his 7th major league season?  Sure.

So the 24-year old is in question to be good long-term, but you have much more faith in the short hot streak of a soon-to-be 33-year old veteran starter who has been pretty much mediocre his entire career?

IMO, Smith is trending down except for his weight.  He looks kind of ridiculous out there.  I don't evaluate Houser long term but certainly I see he has improved his control, increased the speed of his fastball a bit, and has extreme focus in close games when it counts.  He isn't a HOFer like Verlander, (42 years old) but he still has some gas in the tank.  So yes, I would sign him to a one or two year deal...and  if that can be done on favorable terms, it could make him even more valuable to another team.

chryst it's just my opinion. Fukin crucify me.

Houser was the pick, this is dumb.

I'm good with them picking Smith. He's been with the team all year and he'll be here after the TDL.

He's also a good  choice to represent where the Sox are headed and a good choice to represent the the savvy of the new hires since Getz took over.

Yeah it not great that his last 4 starts have been pretty bad and it's greatly impacted his ERA but we knew he'd struggle . He's a rookie with very few innings under his belt . He's a project like all of the rookies.

He's a free agent after the season so they have to trade him now . Sell while he's hot. He's easily their best trade chip. If they want him back they're going to have to outbid other teams for him. Or sign him by 7/31. That's not going to happen.

It'll be interesting to see if they get more back for Houser or Robert unless they end up a package deal to a team with a top OF prospect like DePaula from the Dodgers or Montes from the Mariners. Keep reading before you start thinking I'm out of my mind.

Zyhir Hope also from the Dodgers from the Cubs in the Busch trade. Played CF but Dodgers had a much speedier OF in CF so he's likely a corner since he slowed down from adding muscle. 5th rounder . But having a pretty good year in A + and ranked 37th in the top 100 so I know the 3 Ientioned are not in the cards. They're all too good. I shouldn't be looking in the top 100 at all even with a package deal. Or maybe start at the back end instead of the front end of the top 100 of MLB Pipeline. Dodgers have 3 OF and 4 SS in their Top 10.

DePaula, Hope and switch hitting SS Alex Freeland are 1,2,3 in the Dodgers Top 30 .

Yikes.

To be fair, if they want to sign/work with him again, they can sign him in the offseason. I hope they aim higher though.

I'm sure he'd love the HR pitches back, but a gutsy performance from Smith tonight.

Also his first time going over 100 pitches in his career.

And thanks to his inept teammates he gets nothing out of it.

Shane Smith is really exciting. I’m glad he’s tweaked the arsenal and he’s pitching this deep into the season. Good move on the Sox by giving him a couple weeks off to save his arm

Certainly seems like Smith is the real thing.  The fact that he's learning and adjusting his use of pitches is encouraging.  I'm sure he is tiring, and the Sox giving him some rest looks to have helped.  He should only get better moving forward.

His stuff rebounding with some time off is a really good sign for him going forward.  Season long conditioning is obviously a huge thing for him going forward, so as long as we can keep him going without hurting himself is important.
