They want a starter that can go in the postseason and a late inning guy, as well as a third baseman

I know I change my mind a lot, but Sox are much better team this season than last for obvious reasons.

-- No massive losing streaks. Didn't we have 2-3 huge streaks last year of double digits. I think this year we had just one ridiculous one (9 games? 8 games?).

-- The games themselves. I don't have the stats but my eyes and memory tell me the Sox have grabbed the early lead in a lot of games this year. Last year as I recall we got boatraced a lot from the first inning on and we also got shut out way more than this year.

-- We have a handful of everyday players that are young but promising. Last year that wasn't the case. Pham bugs me.

-- Our manager doesn't seem to be a buffoon. He's just a regular manager, with very little effect on the actual game but not one to do monumentally stupid things with the lineup, etc.

Only thing as bad or worse this year is our pitching and that keeps us way way under .500. Sometimes the Sox get a good outing but our pitchers don't even go six innings and our bullpen is mostly unknown stiffs. 

So the pessimist in me tells me there "always will be something" keeping us 20 under .500. The optimist in me tells me the young players will propel us to .500 in 2017. Still way too long to wait for mediocrity. But I do think we are better this year than last (despite the fact I change my mind on this a lot). What do u folks say?

 Any trade that potentially could help the Cubs in the playoffs this year? Forget it. Plenty of other teams to trade with.Tell the Cubs to pound sand.

No big deal 3 earned runs in 4.1 innings. No one could have expected a better run than he's had. It's been phenomenal actually. 

People are talking like that kind of run happens all the time but it's quite rare for even the best starting pitchers to go on a 10 game run with a 1.89 ERA. Even more rare for a guy to come out of nowhere to do it.

Today may have been his worst start but the stuff was decent. May have been overthrowing it trying to get a few more Ks . His FB seemed like it was higher than usual at 96 a few times.

Who cares?  They have already won a WS more recently than the Sox so what does it even matter?  If they have the best offer for Sox players, deal them.  It’s not like we don’t already know that the Cubs are a better organization and team than our lowly Sox.

The Sox went 67-95 in 2017.

First of all the pitching is much better than last year, league average ERA is 4.04 and the Sox are 4.10, last year we were last with a 4.67 ERA. It’s the hitting that’s killing us, last in OPS, last in BA, second to last in homers, second to last in runs and the list goes on. I thought they were in the process of turning things around with the bats in late May and June but just about all the young prospects have regressed since then. The bats have come around this weekend but we’re playing the Pirates, the Rays are up next and let’s see what they do in TB.       

Venable is better than Grifol which isn’t saying a lot, he’s had some bad moments but the team hasn’t quit on him and hopefully he gets better with experience.

I’m optimistic like you and think the kids will also get better with experience and we should be a .500 team in 2027. Theres also the possibility that Ishiba takes over sooner than 2029 and he goes out and signs some quality free agents which could really help things along.

Might as well be the same record in 2017 as 2027…

Teel has a long ways to go as a catcher, Meidroth has a lower OPS than Robert, Vargas and Sosa are fatally flawed and only Quero of those five has really impressed recently.

They desperately need either Teel or Colson to succeed.

And yet they had Crochet and first half Fedde…nobody close to those two individual impacts this year.
