I would be targeting toolsy lefty OF. It doesn't matter if they are 4 years away. It doesn't matter how far they have to develop, we need to just accumulate scratch offs.

Wait I thought "something" was better than "nothing" and now people are complaining about it?

Tauchman asked not to be traded. Has a daughter going through medical issues and his family is all lives in Illinois. Support network to help them out.

  • You can sign Houser to that deal in 4 months if you want. You absolutely take the 40 grade prospect.

the move to make here is another Vargas type move... Marlins really followed that with Stowers, who is a guy that had multiple MLB chances but hadnt done anythng with it. Now he's an All-Star. Hopefully we can talk to someone with a stacked farm system who has people blocked, and we can evaluate traits over performance.

I say this because people are not trading bats, or teenagers. Caissie for Houser is unrealistic pipe dream. Same with Alcantara. Same with Shaw.

I firmly believe that trading for ranked dudes with options, or better yet, not due on a 40-man for a year, is classic "buying high".

This.

I'd rather have Gilbert as the headliner.  He looks like he may stick in CF and is starting to heat up at the plate.

Could we get Alcantara from the Cubs for Houser?

He's obviously blocked in CF there.

I don't think he was ever gonna play in CF. I doubt the Cubs do anything with Alcantara or Caissie until the Tucker contract situation is resolved. Unless it's for a star player. Maybe they re-sign Tucker and prefer to keep their young outfielders anyway, and Tucker plays more at DH/1B as he ages into his 30s. Michael Busch is probably more expendable than Alcantara is...actually, I didn't realize he was having such a crazy year. Really wanted that guy on the team and I was about to say "he's probably more in the Houser tier" but, man, he's playing great.

I wonder if we could get an actually interesting player like Alcantara if Houser is packaged with Jonathan Cannon or someone else controllable/semi-valuable...like Luis Robert. Giolito and Rey Lopez for Quero and Bush worked out pretty well for us and terribly for the Angels, and no team is as desperate as they were that season or ever will be again, but maybe someone is pretty close. I feel like the Yankees desperately need pitching and it's embarrassing that they're 5.5 back from Toronto. Spencer Jones seems more 'acquirable' than Alcantara IMO. His prospect status has fallen a bit and he's not pushing Judge or Dominguez out of the corner outfield. lol, Stroman just exited after giving up 4 runs in 3.2 innings.

Miguel Vargas as the headliner was always dumb for where the roster is.

You’re nuts. Didn’t you hear Schriffen last night? He told us Miguel Vargas has made himself into a star.

There's one pitcher off the market.

Maybe related:

Extend Houser. 2/$14m. better than some 40 grade prospect.

I think he nets something like the Sox got in the Giolito/Lopez or Lynn/Kelly trades. So one of Nastrini, Leasure, Bush. I didn’t include Quero because I doubt someone overpays like the Angels did. Hard pass.

f*** no.  Haven’t we learned from Fedde already?  Thankfully, the Sox dealt him quickly, albeit for a mediocre return.  Houser needs to be dealt before he turns back into a pumpkin at midnight.  There’s absolutely no reason to extend a dude who will be 33 before next season starts and was never good to begin with.  Sell high on this fluke.

Houser could easily go the route of being a 40 grade pitcher again next year.

I don't think it makes any sense to extend him. He's much more likely to revert back to his career norms than continue to be at/near his current performance. I would not start him again for the White Sox.

At the same time, other teams know this. Package him with another piece and maybe they get a team's top 10-15 prospect.

There’s no way in hell that Houser should be pitching tomorrow

Yep, the risk of injury would make starting Houser tomorrow a very stupid decision.  Also, with skipping his start tomorrow, whatever team that acquires Houser will be able to start him almost immediately makes it a no brainer decision.

"In particular, Houser is a great example. His market is strong with a few teams indicating serious interest, league sources said. But as of Tuesday afternoon, people with knowledge of the situation said nothing was close."

-From today's article in the Athletic about the glacial pace of trades so far but expecting things to really ramp up the last 2 days.

I'm glad there is a decent market for him. There's no way in hell you risk starting him today.

Robert is going to end up getting Craig Kimbrel'd isn't he? (Option picked up with the intent on moving him, then getting nothing anyways)

Imagine a world where the Sox go through this deadline and don't trade any of Robert, Tauchman, and Houser. Talk about a kick in the nuts.

I feel like Houser is a backup plan for most teams and the starting pitchIng market hasn’t moved at all

Robert will move today or tomorrow. I doubt Tauchman does though

See, we agree on something.

I don't think it makes any sense to have Houser pitch today. At the same time, the media puts way too much stock into each start. If he throws 7 IP today and gives up 1 ER, I doubt the current value would change much. If he gives up 6 ER in 4 IP, I think this is just a reminder why he doesn't have tremendous value and why teams aren't going to give up more than a flyer.

If he starts today, that is more of a statement of his value around the league than anything else.

I agree -  I don't think it changes much, teams weren't interested in him 3 months ago; they certainly aren't trading anything more than a chip. I think it's more about the health risk of something unexpected happens

He's essentially a depth piece. Despite his success, I don' think teams would plan to use him in Game 1 or 2 of a series. Maybe Game 3 or 4 if he continues at this pace.

Yeah it looks more likely they wont trade Tauchman, which is hopefully because no one is interested or else I think that's just foolish. You can sign a cheap veteran to give a leadership presence in the offseason if you need it that much.

Fine, but then we should have gotten 2 or 3 Vargas’ in that trade.

Sure Marlins did well trading for 2 out-of-options guys.  How about the Sox? Hahn brought us Madeiros and Cordell; and those secondary prospects in the Frazier/Robertson trade that did zilch?  Low minors Rule 5 guys.  Getz trading for the older prospects =  Julks, Fletcher and DeLoach.

I’d say the real bargain, is not the decliner, but the ascender who hasn’t hit the ranked prospect lists.  That’s what the Padres and As got from Hahn.
That’s PCA.  That’s what the Dodgers got from the Cubs for Bush.
