Adrian Houser traded to TB for former top prospect Curtis Mead

I wish they would let Teel work out there. He played outfield in college. Quero is the catcher and Lee comes up as the second catcher. Teel is your emergency catcher

this way you get Teel and Quero in the line up and Lee on the big league club like he should be. Beni becomes full time DH

There is no reason to abandon Teel as a catcher at this point. But Lee should absolutely be on the roster and I have no issue letting Teel get reps in LF and 1B.

I guess we can't complain about the return for a guy who's k/bb rate is ass, huh?

I would say it's a pretty nice return. Davitt has a 24% K rate to 5% walk rate, I'll take it

Mead had an OPS over 1000 in June

Honestly, I thought the return was pretty good for Slater and Houser.  I just think he should have managed to make more trades — Tauchman and perhaps Civale, Wilson, and Altavilla.

Yea, it was okay; just not my cup of tea.  Mead looks like the same player who's been traipsing through here from the waiver wire.  Another IF.   Can they at least cut Rojas to make room for him.

But, yes, he needed to get Robert traded.  It was even more important given Benintendi is intractable and he didn't want to trade Trauchman.  We need room to develop the next generation.
As for the relievers only 3 have real value: Taylor, Vasil and Leasure and we understandably didn't want to trade them.  Yes Leasure:  as soon as he gets his command squared away, he'll be really good and then we can trade him.

Wish we could have moved others for flyers because we need the room.  Palette needs to be up soon.   Dalquist and "4 rounds" Kelley probably aren't far behind.  There are others.
And hopefully Taylor and Vasil in rotation next year.

With all due respect to Houser, whose brief time as a Sox I sincerely enjoyed...if I was a Cubs fan tonight, hearing that Adrian Houser was the "really tried, just missed" addition would just piss me off.

Houser is the guy they should have gotten after their actual "really tried, just missed" SP fell through.

Mead is basically Vargas, but hopefully he can actually get near an .800 OPS with full-time at bats.  I assume they will throw him at 1B and see what he can do.  I was hoping Tauchman would be traded because he should have had value and we could see what Danger Will could do in RF for the rest of the season, but it seems like the Sox want Tauchman back as a cheap starting RF for next season.

Yes, I’m sure the Dodgers regret trading away 1.5 WAR Miguel Vargas for what Kopech did for them in the second half of the season and what Edman did for them in the postseason on the way to their World Series.  Is this a serious post?

World Series teams tend not to have a ton of regrets. My point wasn't that they weren't happy to have those guys contributing to their World Series run, but that they likely thought when they traded Vargas they were trading away a player who would never contribute in MLB. With the gift of hindsight they probably would have rather traded some other player or players who were discussed instead (maybe a guy like Hunter Feduccia was also acceptable to the Sox as a centerpiece). Given that Dodgers currently have their 3B, 2B, and utility guy on the injured list, they might wish they had a guy like 2025 Vargas to help plug those holes (and their previous injury problems at those positions as well as 1B).

As we've seen LA doesn't really have any special sauce, just a whole lotta money. Vargas isn't who I would have targeted but I mean it's hardly a huge win or loss for either team. Quite a few GMs and fans operate on the idea that you can only fleece teams in trades, that's not really how any of this works. Getz isn't a genius but it's not like LA is laughing as they are making that deal, they gave up a decent amount on paper and Vargas still has like a 1/3 chance to turn into a solid 2-3 WAR regular which is valuable.

So even after Kopech and Edman helped them win a World Series last year, they still have Edman’s 1.3 bWAR on this season matching Vargas’s 1.3 bWAR on this season, even if Kopech doesn’t do anything for them when he returns from his torn meniscus surgery.  Edman can also play more positions than Vargas, so I still don’t see how the Dodgers could ever regret the trade, or wish they had Vargas over what they have right now.

The Dodgers won the trade, the Sox came in second, and the Cardinals lost it.

Imagine being one of the biggest revenue teams in baseball and then trotting out the corpse of Bruce Levine how you ALMOST got Adrian Houser.  JFC!

In regards to the topic, I like this and the Will Robertson move from a couple weeks ago. These type of moves Rick and Kenny just didn’t know how to make, trading for dudes who fall out of favor of an organization and are young enough to develop. Give your remodeled scouting and player development team a chance to turn them into something and if you can’t you learn from it.

I’ll give it to Chris Getz he seems to fully understand how out of touch this organization was before he took over and doing what he can to build the foundation.

Curious what the Cubs were offering and what Getz wanted, prospect-wise.

Huh?  Hahn did this all the time.  It just never worked out.

Move this dude to full-time 1B and let him focus on hitting instead of his defense.  We have nothing at 1B other than Elko, and Elko likely isn’t worth the plate appearances.  At least the Sox don’t think so.  And he’s got to be better than Noda.  🤣

Scouting grades: Hit: 60 | Power: 55 | Run: 45 | Arm: 45 | Field: 45 | Overall: 55

The son of Australian Baseball Leaguer Tim Mead, Curtis was a quality ABL hitter himself, batting .373/.411/.471 over 20 games as a 16-year-old in the 2017-18 season. The Phillies signed him the following May, then dealt him to the Rays in November 2019 for left-handed reliever Cristopher Sánchez before he left the Florida complex. An instructs participant in 2020, Mead was one of the Rays system’s best hitters last season with a .321/.378/.533 line and 55 extra-base hits in 104 games across three levels. He impressed further in the Arizona Fall League with an 18-game hitting streak.

The right-handed slugger stands upright in his stance and commands the strike zone with a mix of discipline and bat control that leads to few strikeouts. (His 15.5 percent K rate was fourth-best among Rays full-season qualifiers in 2021.) Mead is also able to show plus raw power from the box. His contact mostly results in line drives and doubles to the gap for now, but the Rays believe those will go over the fence as the 21-year-old matures and gains experience.

Tampa Bay wants to keep him away from a full-time first base role as long as possible and made third base his primary position in 2021, though he’s far from fluid there. His arm strength is also tested across the diamond. He has seen more game time at second base this season, and that has replaced first as his secondary position. The bat will play anywhere he lands, and that notion has gotten truer with each passing level.

Outside of like Nomar Mazara who had over 2,000 ABs by the time he came here who else? Genuinely asking

Vargas specifically is achieving about where he was expected when the Dodgers traded him. Meaning his full season projections today are around where they were when the Dodgers decided he wasn't in their future plans and they'd seen enough. Zips, for example, had him at about a 1.5 WAR player then have him as so now.

And if Mead matches his 2026 and 2027 current Zips projections, we will all be uniformly thrilled.

Numerous over the years, and this is just position players that actually made the major league roster.  And I’m sure I’m missing a few.

Adam Eaton (the first time)

Conor Gillaspie

Brett Lawrie

Adam Haseley

Reese McGuire

Rymer Liriano

Charlie Tilson

Moises Sierra

Avisail Garcia
