That's what spending a lot of money on good scouts and talent evaluators will get you.

JR still hasn't learned that lesson.

Wait I thought "something" was better than "nothing" and now people are complaining about it?

Tauchman asked not to be traded. Has a daughter going through medical issues and his family is all lives in Illinois. Support network to help them out.

  • You can sign Houser to that deal in 4 months if you want. You absolutely take the 40 grade prospect.

You don’t need scouts to know that a 2024 first round draft pick is far, far more valuable than a failed prospect looking for a change of scenery.  It’s beyond belief that Getz thinks that value resides in declining prospects (more like a value-trap). Heck, these players are routinely available for free on the waiver wire.
And Tampa, of course, trades the real prospects to the Dodgers.
I like a lot of Getz' work over the last 2 years, but a C for this deadline is generous:   big-time grade inflation.

Can you explain what you're talking about here? Was there some trade of Hagen Smith for a prospect that has bottomed out that hasn't been reported yet? Or was there some rumored deal that Getz opted out of?

Young prospects who haven't caught fire in their first couple of MLB stints, like Miguel Vargas and Curtis Mead are not routinely available on the waiver wire. They're so rare that I only remember one, Alexander Canario, getting floated all season.

He was referring to the Dodgers getting James Tibbs for Dustin May being a better get than Mead for Houser.

Fedducia btw

Lots of scouts are raving about Tibbs potentially being a star.

Rich get richer.

Meanwhile in the real world hes been traded twice in 45 days and has struggled mightily in AA. That may be understandable given hes 22 and a year removed from being drafted, but if you want to compare him to Mead, Mead was already in MLB at that point.

Comparing kids that start at age 18 vs. 22-23 in professional baseball is really apples and oranges.

"Tibbs entered his junior season in 2024 as a top prospect for the 2024 Major League Baseball draft.[5]"

The Dodgers can easily afford to invest in talent and only need to be right 20-30% of the time.

The point is you have to have a constant influx of talent with high ceilings...and then be able to develop that talent.

And with the Red Sox holding onto Duran, that left a severely crowded OF picture with Yoshida Raffaela Anthony and Abreu.

It's understandable but will probably come back to haunt Boston/Breslow.

Ofc the Dodgers now have dePaula Z.White and Tibbs...and will still probably replace Conforto in LF this upcoming offseason.

Houser sked to start tonight vs Angels.

I’m not a Tibbs fan. He can’t hit lefties. Platoon bat.

That doesn’t bother me as much since most pitchers are righty. They still make majority of the starts in the lineup. Just gotta pair with a veteran platoon bat. Or bat lower in lineup against lefties.

Yeah, they said that about Schwarber and now many advocating spending HUGE on him.  Not saying Tibbs turns into that, but you can't bag on a 22 YO for not hitting much on the weak side.  Tons of lefties don't hit lefties.

For the record lefties hitting against lefties is probably the rarest of the hitting interactions out there.  It's probably hardest because left hand hitters just don't see a lot of quality left hand pitching to practice against early in their careers.

Is Mead a legit UT for 1st, 2nd, & 3rd ?

If he can handle all 3 positions that would be sweet.

Probably not 3B due to arm strength…but we’ve got Rojas!

Houser hadn't given up a HR to a RH hitter this season, but just gave one up to Jo Adell six batters into his Rays debut.

I really wish good things for Houser the rest of the way (except in the Sox series). He seems like him and his wife have had a rough year with the newborn and the flux of changing teams, and all. Some Twitter peeps are LTFAO, and I'm just SMH. I hope he pulls it together and draws a good contract this winter.

Houser's Rays debut: 5.2IP, 5ER (season high), 11H (ties career high), 1 BB, 3K.

I assume some of it is rust from skipping a turn, but apparently TB fans are having Manzardo for Civale flashbacks already...same division and everything.

Also ironic given Civale's recent performance here.

Sox are ultimately going to tank their own trade values if these guys can't perform elsewhere. Everyone should be rooting for them.

I heard a clip on 670 where he got emotional after being asked about the trade deadline. The changing of teams has to be weighing on him. I’m pulling for Houser the rest of the way!

I'm surprised MLPA has never made an issue of this.

What's the issue? The White Sox signing a player to trade him if he can help another team?

He did have a rough outing at Pittsburgh in his first start of the 2nd half and then pitched well vs the Cubs (got hit in the later innings). I think his advanced metrics have hinted at a regression.

I would guess he'll provide innings for the rest of the season, but won't come close to the performance that he had in the first 9 starts. Sox were smart to get a few players back for him and hopefully he'll pitch well enough to get a major league contract for next season.

Hey, Spider, I'm not saying it's an issue with me. I'm just surprised the Players Association never brought this up. You know, a few dozen players being tossed around in the middle of the season at the whim of the teams, upsetting the wives, etc. Maybe it has been secretly brought up, and there already is a quid pro quo. Not a big deal to me.

Gotcha. I just think it's part of the business; I don't think there would be agreement from players/teams to not be able to make trades outside of what's already available in no-trade contracts for a limited group of star type players; productive player knows he may get traded if he is on a team that isn't competing. When he signed with the White Sox, Houser was probably just hoping to get an opportunity to get back to the majors, and it's worked out much better than anyone could have anticipated.

I only watched a couple episodes of the Red Sox doc on Netflix, but I think there's a running subplot with the wife of one of the players living in a hotel with the kids. It's gotta suck dumping everything on the wife to keep the family going, and all.
