Cubs acquire old friend Michael Soroka

Featured Replies

Liked him when he was here even though the team refused to play well behind him.

Would have expected the Cubs to aim a little higher though.

They’re losing out on all the bullpen pitchers they should have been overpaying to get, and then they pick up Soroka?  Probably should have waited on that extension for Hoyer until after the deadline.

They’ll get a bigger name.  Suarez and Kelly is very possible

Yikes. For Soroka? That’s rough

Bet they move him back to the pen. Fastball really plays up in shorter stints.

The Cubs really like taking 2024 Sox starters and using them in the bullpen

I could dig that return for Houser.

Soroka must just be cheap contract wise, because he doesn’t look like he’s having that great of a year. Seems like it’s a bit of an overpay or they couldn’t get what they wanted elsewhere.

There's no excuse for us not to get something decent for Houser.

The excuse is that the Cubs are dumb and no one else would give what they gave for Soroka.

It’s not really #13 and #14 prospects. Pipeline isn’t updated. Cruz is #17 at BA. Good shortstop but 5% walk rate and no power in ACL. Franklin isn’t on T30 and was available to entire league in Rule 5 and nobody was interested. Great deal For Cubs imo.

"Great" is really pushing it.

It might end up being solid or could certainly go awry when he's under real pressure in the spotlight of the August/Sept. pennant race.

Might not have a choice if this drop is fatigue related

I think cubs just DFAed Flexen, so unfortunately they don’t have the pleasure of rocking the early 24 White Sox pen like they could be

I hope "shoulder discomfort" isn't something more serious, but it's not like the warning signs weren't there...

Counsel said Soroka's going on the IL. God, that sucks. 2024 was such a horrible year, and I'm really rooting for guys like Soroka.

With Soroka hurt, I wonder if the Sox could see if Civale clears waivers and deal him to the Cubs?  Civale is owed just over $2 million for the remainder of the season after the Brewers sent the Sox around $1,236,828 to cover the difference between Vaughn’s and Civale’s contracts.  I guess at only $2 million, teams would probably claim Civale.

That's true, could do that to save some money. Like the Angels did a couple years ago after they traded for Giolito and Lopez.

Waiver trades are no longer a thing after the trade deadline
