February 2Feb 2 In other words, he wasn't going through waivers, so the Sox got a little something for him.

February 2Feb 2 Why not? He's only 23 and the Orioles got him for free. I still can't believe Sox DFAd him, as well as the guys DFAd for Hicks, with 30 year old Derek Hill and his career .624 OPS on the 40-man.

Ramos is out of options, and he certainly isn't playing over Vargas at this point. Even though he had a very small and inconsistent sample in the MLB, his stats at Charlotte are not at all impressive - and that's one of the most hitter friendly parks in the league. He can't hit RHP. Hill gets a ton of crap for being on the roster, but he does have value in the glove and on the bases. Ramos provides no value on either side of the ball.

He has zero options left and wasn’t making the OD roster. As such, a DFA was inevitable. The Orioles are taking a $50k to $100k gamble in hopes he can sneak through waivers later. As for Hill, he very well could be the guy DFA’d for Hays. I always felt the wanted another OF in place before they considered such a decision.

And it looks like Baldwin and Acuña are the only two OF experiments they're willing to endure this season. Sosa, Ramos, Antonacci - they've all been talked about as spare OFs.
February 3Feb 3 Not sure what the O's are planning. Depth I guess. I don't know how a team that is trying to make the playoffs will have room for him on their 26-man roster. Hedging their bets with injuries I suppose.
