Not an economist but that doesn't seem to make sense. If they have an 80 million budget. His salary is 31. They need to pay him that. Which means they have 49 to spend on the rest of the team. It not money paid in the past. Its money currently paid on the payroll. Its not like equipment that is paid for in the past and they owe nothing on it.

They are paying him whether he is here or not.  It's a sunk cost.  The contract is guaranteed.

But why would anyone want that bad money ($15.5 million per year) if you can just sign another veteran outfielder like Austin Hays for 1-year and $6 million?

Correct. But he is still on the books for this year. Its not like they can magically increase the budget if he's not here. He is still a charge fir the payroll. 

If they cut him and eat the sunk cost, it still costs them more toward the payroll as his replacement costs more payroll even if its the minimum.

There's also the opportunity cost they're spending on Benintendi. There are only 13 offensive roster spots, and Benintendi will be taking one of them. That means they can't carry one of Pereira/Kelenic/Hill/Mead/etc. It would be worth the incurred league minimum to DFA Benintendi and roster Pereira, for instance.

Which is also offset by losing someone else to a 26 and 40 man roster spot, as well as the development time lost, and opportunity cost of who could have been playing LF.  And if 800k for an extra player makes that decision for you, sell the team and get out of the business.

Look at his numbers and compare them to the rest of the league's free agents.  Benny is a minor league contract with an invite to spring training for the chance to get a couple of million dollars if he can make the team as a free agent.  He has zero value.

Selling the team over 800,000 Sounds great but we know that isnt happening. JR gave Getz a budget. He needs to work within it for better or worse.

Again, sell the team.  And if Getz doesn't have freedom to spend 800k, that tells me everything I know about how much "better" things are with the change, because the top is still the same block it is always been.

Must be just to get all the pitchers reps. Thought it was usually just 4 tho and then a coach would help out. Little spring curiosity maybe I'll ask someone if I get to a game.

$780K is the MLB minimum salary for 2026.  If Getz can’t spend that where he wants, there is truly no hope until Jerry is gone.
