March 6Mar 6 People are sleeping way too hard on Thorpe. Honestly, if the 4 seamer comes back with a couple extra ticks (which happens fairly often after TJS), kid will be a key part of this rotation moving forward.

Even if his velo is the same, I think he will be better than a lot of people believe. Not being a hard thrower gives him less margin for error, but he can still develop into a quality pitcher.
March 6Mar 6 consecutive lead off doubles to greet Burke 1-0 already CLE oops Make that three consecutive doubles Valera this time three different directions too Edited March 6Mar 6 by caulfield12

March 6Mar 6 Acuna at SS for this one does Colson have a nagging injury or they just wanted to see what Acuna could do? uh oh 4-0 Cayfus homer not looking like a bottom 5 offense in this one so far Edited March 6Mar 6 by caulfield12

It's not his fastball, it's not his breaking balls and his changeup is solid but not elite and too reliant on pinpoint command. His average 4 seam velocity prior to TJS was 91.3. Maybe he gains a couple ticks otherwise I just don't see it. His change is much better than "solid". He'll need more but that is still an understatement.
March 6Mar 6 Thorpe had a 40% whiff rate with his changeup which is crazy especially if you don't think they respected his other pitches and that his injury was making him lose his command. If I had more time I'd do a little explainer on how unusual his changeup is but it was certainly very effective.

March 6Mar 6 Some crazy high scoring footbal scores in exhibition baseball today including a 27-6 game . Sox might be on the bad end of that mojo tonight.

You guys are just wishcasting stuff. He's a RHP that throws 91mph. If he succeeds he's a unicorn, no matter what the whiff rate is on his changeup. It's more likely he's out of MLB in 3 years than he's a solid 3rd starter.

Thorpe had a bone spur in his elbow removed in 2024, it is what ended his season. They had to shut him down because he couldn't pitch through the pain anymore. As he attempted to return from the bone spur surgery, he tore his UCL in spring training 2025. These injuries are almost certainly related as the bone spur forms due to stress on the ligament.
March 6Mar 6 totally different offense with Colson scuffling and no Murakami Bibee is a very good pitcher as well

To further clarify, he had to stop pitching due to pain in the elbow. It was diagnosed as a "flexor strain." They later saw the spur when imaging the elbow to check his recovery. They decided to remove that. The next time he tried to throw full speed was in spring training when his UCL gave way all the way.

Hard to expect much of anything until June...maybe even July.
