Smith was selected with the No. 171 overall pick out of Wright State. The backstop popped 26 home runs in his final season with the Raiders. The 23-year-old has yet to suit up in the minors. Chicago has a pair of talented young catchers on the big-league squad in Kyle Teel and Edgar Quero. Veteran Reese McGuire is currently backing up Quero as Teel deals with a hamstring strain suffered in the World Baseball Classic.

Picking a guy up off the dfa/release scrap heap and getting a 6th round pick out of it is ultimately a net positive move. This Smith guy has some impressive peripherals even if it came against relatively weak college competition. Can’t be mad that teams aren’t valuing Houser, Yoendrys, Fedde like they’re star talents.

Which in a roundabout way leads me to think Katz should’ve kept his job and who knows if this new pitching coach is any good/can work the same kind of magic with marginal talent.
