But regardless of what you think the chances are of it happening, is it a waste to use Taylor in a game that another pitcher subsequently loses? What if using Taylor as an opener reduces the chances o

  • I hope you keep the honor for a long...long time.

  • Quero really needs to start catching the throw from the outfield.

If you have the GameThread torch, you can put that next game thread up the prior day right after the previous win, if you want. Nbd

Mabe their goal is just to have him as a 100 game opener lol

We seem to be catching the Orioles in a slow start. Let's keep that going. Blue Jays look ragged after this weekend.

Fegan's article about Shane Smith working on things

Inside the White Sox's effort to get Shane Smith back to his All-Star form - Sox Machine

"He lost some of the qualities that made him unique. Pitchers often do that in an effort to actually become better pitchers or build upon the previous year, but in reality sometimes it forces them to take a step back," said Brian Bannister. "He had this unique little step forward that threw hitters off on their timing and then he would speed up right after that to go slow, fast. He would get his front side up and back a lot. You get some visual deception in a way that Tarik Skubal does.

"He came into camp with a more simplified delivery this year. He had a huge workload spike last year. And I think his goal was to throw more strikes. But what it has proven is just throwing him off a little bit. He hasn’t been confident in his fastball command. Eliminating some of those elements also eliminates some of those things that are hard to quantify. We call them residuals -- the timing deception, the visual deceptions."

Brandon Young - career 6.24era - starting for the O’s.

Let's go Branden.

Just the kind of guy the White Sox traditionally fix right up with one hit over 7 innings. Man, some of these rotations of teams that are supposed to be competitive look haggard so early.

If we are going to be using Taylor as mainly an opener we desperately need another quality arm for the later innings

During Joel Reuter's first power rankings of the season, the White Sox sat in dead last. However, he has a bit more faith in the organization after watching them over the weekend, bumping them up a few places to 21 (mlb.com still has them at #29 despite weekend sweep).

"Rebuilding is all about incremental progress. It took until July 20 for the White Sox to complete their first three-game sweep of the 2025 season, and they didn't pick up their fourth win until their 14th game of the year, so Sunday marked two positive steps in the right direction."

Even with an abysmal start to the season, the White Sox are already miles ahead of where the team sat last season, thanks in large part to what Murakami is doing at the plate.

And all of NC too. I'm 7 hours away from Baltimore and 2 states over. They block me from Balt, DC, Atlanta, and Cincy. So dumb. I sent you a DM

That's what I don't get. You have a massive lack of leverage relievers, and now you have one less if you are going waste Taylor as a starter in games that you have no idea if he was a good usage inside of, until the game is over.

They got this, they dont know what youre talking about. They're gonna stick to the plan. Make him throw strikes , punish the mistakes. Play defense, push the envelop.

I don't get how this is different from basically any usage of any reliever?

Was it a "waste" for him to pitch the 7th in MIL because the team gave up the lead in the 8th and lost? Is it poor non-usage to save him for higher leverage and then have a different reliever put the game out of reach?

If you're judging "good usage" of an arm by the unknowable results of future innings, then the start of the 9th or extras with a lead are the only situations that don't rely on hindsight.

Otherwise, "What if he pitches well but then you lose the game?" is just baseball.

Except you have 6 to 7 innings to figure it out that you don't have with an opener. It's why it's called high leverage. If Taylor goes out and strikes out three in the first inning, but the "starter" comes in and gets bombed, it was a waste. If you reverse Taylor and the starter, you don't use Taylor in that game, and he is more available for the next day, where he might not be in the first scenario. If he is pitching the 8th or 9th inning, the chances of a pitcher blowing it AFTER him is reduced by a very large percentage. The odds of using him in a blow out game are WAY increased in the opener situation. I get the idea OF the opener, but when you basically have two, MAYBE three high leverage relievers, it doesn't make nearly as much sense. Your chances of optimizing Taylors usage are massively increased by the more game that has been played.

Doesn't the leverage come when he enters the game with runners on base?

Otherwise, yea, I guess having him pitch the 1st isn't really any different than pitching, say, the 7th.
If they are preparing him to start, it would seem, though, that he'd build up innings v. pitching 1 inning on a regular basis.
