The Padres season is going down the tubes. I wonder if they would trade Mason Miller if they acquired a package of young players.

MLBTV had a brief discussion on Miller yesterday, asking the same question.

We have no excuse not to buy a top-end SP in free agency this offseason. As such, I’d rather keep Bonemer and go with a cheaper SP at the deadline. I truly believe we should not be doing “all-in” trad

Trevor Bauer is an awful clubhouse fit even if you believe him innocent of any criminal wrongdoing. I also don’t understand why anyone would think a 35 year old pitching in the Nippon League or where

Gonzo can go back down to Charlotte and stop his arb clock once Mune is back. That's fine. He just got a nice pay pump for 6 weeks or whatever and now he knows he close he is and what he has to contin

Yes, im skeptical of any pitch rating that has Javier Assad sweeper in the top tier. Correct. Along with bum Funderburk and Sandlin sheesh

Im one of the few here who still is a sucker for Hicks skills.

Shut your god damn mouth. Studlin will be back soon and better than ever.

Too expensive. At that point, just make McDougal your closer and the keep the other prospects it would take to get Miller.

Sonny Gray and Aroldis Chapman just seems too perfect in terms of needs and commitment to players

I really do think Gray having a NTC and costing a lot of money will reduce his cost. The only change is that the Braves could really use another SP and they will also be super attractive to Sonny.

Putting Chapman in the closer role solves alot of other bullpen problems too

Any big name you can pretty much not expect the Sox to acquire. They're not going to trade away their top young assets.

They're going to be very selective about getting a good deal. I wouldn't expect too much.

If Sonny Gray is mostly a cash deal maybe him. Maybe can add an unrated RP or 2 also but maybe the help comes from within since we have a lot of young arms mending. Hell the team has ridden the youth this far might as well just let it ride.

It really slides everyone down one slot and makes the 7th and 8th pretty hard to navigate for opposing managers when you have Newcomb/Taylor/dominguez/Murphy waiting for matchups

What will be the cost of Chapman? We talking an org top 10 or nah?

Oh yeah, more like top 5

Steep price to pay. Given up projected 6-8 WAR over next 5 years at league min to get a good but aging bullpen rental. I duno, I'm not the GM, the guy we have is doing a good job, we'll see what happens.

Shouldn't be. And certainly should never pay that price. But probably will be.
Again, though, moves like this are how we got bad. ( it was a big part of it). Imagine had the Cubs chosen Crochet instead of Madrigal.
And it's not like Chapman has been pristine. His 1.27 WHIP trails Grant Taylor, Newcomb, Richard, the much maligned (at least by me) Eisert; it also trails Tyler Davis and also much maligned Leasure.
And for the bWAR believers, behind Taylor and Newcomb and Hudson.

I don't want to trade for a 36-year-old & a woman abuser.

I'd have a hard time rooting for him as well.

As much as Chapman would solve a lot of problems, I kind of think the Sox are going to fast track McDougal into a relief role. I think he could be dominant in that role pretty quickly and allows you to deploy prospect capital to a SP.

Fair with Chapman, but I feel like you are really overlooking Gray. Sticking him in the middle of the rotation does nothing but help. Not expecting an ace, but someone who can come in and eat innings and win some tough games

I can't help but wonder if Getz is going to try to extend our young players.

If they do get Gray, they should call up Mason Adams and tell him to be Gray’s shadow. I always felt like Gray was Adams’ best case 100% outlook scenario.

What's the price? You can't pay a top 100 prospect for a 36 year old non-ace; he's in the midst of a great season which could very well even out over the 2nd half, as it did in 2025: first half 2.5 ERA and 1.083 WHIP; 2nd half 5.45 and 1.46.

I didn’t talk price all I said was those two fit the need and are short term. You are free to prospect hoard

A lot is going to depend on his health situation. Anytime a pitcher starts to have forearm soreness to me that's a major red flag. He just got back to live action recently.

I think the Sox, like it or not, have to give it time to see if this medical issue is behind him or not. Under no circumstances would I be rushing him.

Top prospects rarely go at the deadline and even less so for rentals. Don’t think Sonny Gray with a NTC and hefty contract will be the exception.

He’s actively on a rehab assignment right now in High A, so he’s working his way back from injury at a normal pace. When I say “fast track” I mean punting on his development as a SP, including building up arm strength, to instead help the major league bullpen whenever he is fully healthy and the rest is warm off.

It might be a hot take, but I’d trade any prospect in the system for Mason Miller. I know people will say giving up a massive haul for a reliever is a risk, but he’s automatic and has 3.5 years of control. He’s a massive difference maker.
