Time to trade for a catcher?

A RHH backup maybe. On a related note, Teel’s bat speed is way up fwiw.

We have no excuse not to buy a top-end SP in free agency this offseason. As such, I’d rather keep Bonemer and go with a cheaper SP at the deadline. I truly believe we should not be doing “all-in” trad

There really are no dominant teams in the AL. You have to get 1 more pitcher but can't break the bank. I would love detmers but can't overpay.

I agree. You don’t do something stupid, but you got to add a SP.

This is not the starting pitcher you are looking for.

Nor the evaluator/scout. How did he survive the Hahn purge?

While I think you’d be selling low, I’d do something centered around Carlson.

Gavin Fien, drafted 2 spots after Carlson, was the main piece for Mackenzie Gore, a similar pitcher (Gore probably had somewhat better performance overall). They did throw in several other guys. Seemed like an overpay by Texas. Then I look at the Crochet trade. Crochet was an ace and he essentially netted us 2 Carlsons plus 2 other pieces.
I would just think that Carlson should be the max for Detmers, who's really been a lackluster pitcher until this season.
Also, I would try to win this division with a 6 man rotation; keep them fresh and Martin seems to do better with extra rest.

Twitter/Reddit burned me to the stake for that tweet but that’s what I was trying to say. I guess I should’ve specified by saying backup catcher. I just can’t handle much more of Drew Romo. He’s not even good enough defensively to make up for his nonexistent bat.

The only true “headliners” we have are Carlos, Fauske, Hagen, & McDougal, so I’d consider all those guys as legit possibilities of being moved come August 1st.

The Sox will also need to thin out the 40 man roster further, including guys who will need to be protected. I love me some Mason Adams, but he’s a primetime candidate to be traded for a SP. Bergolla also fits the billing, but harder to get fair value for him given his injury status. The same applies to Ky Bush and to a lesser extent Thorpe, who I think they’d like to hold onto for next year.

I think Gabe Davis is far more likely to be moved than Oppor, who you’d be selling for pennies on the dollar. He’s the best pitching prospect available after the guys mentioned above and Sandlin, who is might be too important for depth purposes to trade. Pierre George & Matthew LaCombe could also be of interest as a secondary pieces as guys with big stuff but reliever profiles for now.

Beyond that, I think Boston Smith, Colby Shelton, & Kyle Lodise all could get moved due to upper level redundancies. Mogollon fits the same billing, but serves as a younger alternate who provides more upside but less proximity.

You can't count on Smith. Had a brutal outing recently, if I remember it was yesterday. Just crazy wild and even hit two batters.

I’m not counting on him…just listing him as one of four depth options for the #5 spot in the rotation.

A 1-2-3 of Burke-Detmers-Martin can make us competitive for the playoffs. We are seeing in real time Burke take that next step and Martin is a legit #3 despite some regression & fatigue. Hopefully Schultz can build some momentum and make a case to be the clear #4 SP down the stretch. Kay is probably fine for the #5 spot and if not you have Sandlin, S. Smith, Adams, & Fedde in reserve.

I really think Detmers is the dude to get. You can NOT give up Bonemer for him, but I think we enough other pieces to make a compelling offer. I really hope Getz is aggressive here as a quality SP is our single biggest need hands down.

What am I missing? Guy has almost 100 starts and has put up less than 6 WAR and almost half would be in this season (he is on track for just under 3 WAR). Why am I giving up a top 10 pick like Carlson for him plus something else or a guy like McDougall who I personally think has front of the rotation potential (with health the big question mark) ? If we want to sell Hagen because we think there is more bust…maybe…although I’d be more prone to use Hagen and something else for a player more impactful.

I guess I don’t get all these people calling Detmers a front of the rotation guy…he makes Javy Vasquez look like a stud.

I was thinking about Vasquez a couple of days ago. I was thinking he’d be a valuable player in today’s game, if I’m recalling him correctly. I seem to remember he’d look like an All-Star through 5 innings, basically twice through the order, then get rocked the third time through. If he could do that today, he’d be much more valuable than he was 20 years ago. Or maybe I’m remembering wrong and if that’s the case I’m sure I’ll be corrected quickly. 😂

He was pretty darn good and could go deep but I do think he would benefit from how they handle things. Give him and opener and then let him go 6-7. He through innings. And me putting Detmers in same sentence as Javy is really such an utter disgrace to Javy and his 45 WAR.

Detmer is a guy who was a high pick with a good arm who has yet to be anything above being a serviceable starter…yet people want to give up 6 years of cost controlled high end prospects…no thank you.

Now if we want to give up two from a group of Bergolla, Quero, Mason Adams, Ky Bush, or Oppor…that I think is a more realistic price tag. Not sure if I’d sell low on Quero like that but I’d see fair value here (for the record I think Quero is going to have a good long career).

Baltimore is on a 7-game win streak, so they are not sellers at this moment.

They are about to run into the Red Sox.

Some of these teams on win streaks are going to end up selling anyway

How much value does a Boston Smith have? He's playing great and if you could unload him for s backend SP then you basically traded Curtis Mead for a SP. Mead is having a great year but if he were here he wouldn't be playing much. Trade worked for both teams.

I would think he would be desirable as a guy who could catch and play the outfield and you would be selling high on him.

Carlson is a guy I would hate to lose but he's blocked for years at SS.

The thing about detmers is he isn't much better than Kay honestly. But younger with control.

18 hours ago, CaliSoxFanViaSWside said:

Hmm. I like it. Not a big K guy , more of a control guy. However he's been a pretty good pitcher for the last 5 years but only a starting pitcher in 2025 & '26. He's 33 and a FA after the season ends.

Made 31 starts 2025 165.2 IP, 3.53 ERA, 4.11 FIP 1.3 WHIP.

Pitched 3.0 innings in the 2026 WBC no earned run given up.

2026, 9 starts 2.39 ERA, 3.22 FIP, 1.1 WHIP

His fibula was fractured May 15 by a 111 MPH line drive by Spencer Jones of the Yanks. He initially stayed in the game.

Mets want to extend him and will decide on his TDL fate after Holmes decides what to do with the Mets offer.

Nick Hostetler is still around?????

I think it would be foolish to trade Carlson anytime soon. He's about to be 20 and isn't close to creating any issues with roster management. While I agree that he is the most likely man out, its not a decision that needs to be made right now.

I think it depends on whether you think he’ll ever hit at all or not.

if you do you’d be a moron to trade him. If they trade him I think they believe there are issues with his swing that won’t be fixed, given their recent track record I’d be inclined to believe them.

I think trading him now, no matter what they think would be an insane move, unless you get an offer you can't refuse. he hasn't even played a full season in the minors yet. unless there's some glaring issue, let your top 10 pick develop

reid detmers would piss me off for our top prospects

Besides Mead and Gonzalez, what players has the team traded/moved on from based on some internal assessment?

They were wrong about Mead and Gonzalez is still TBD.

Yeah I'm not a huge fan of trading him, but I get it. I just think he's going to totally blow up soon. 70 grade defense with good on base skills. He's been hitting more XBHs since coming back. If he can add some power he could be a really valuable player.

The Sox have moved on from like 70 guys in the last two years. Check your Sporcles. I mean, most were obvious but they range from Dom Fletcher and Corey Julks to relief arms like Marinaccio and Ryan Borucki. They moved on from Fedde and then brought him back. Some of those guys are bound to eventually be successful big leaguers. So far, Mead is probably the one who's had the most success, but really Boston Smith is not nothing. I think the guy has a shot of being a big leaguer.

I mean actual prospects. Moving a bum and him still being a bum doesnt mean much.

I was more talking about the apparent success there has been around tweaking guys swings ie Colson, Gonzalez, Vargas

I like what Boston Smith has been doing but he has a total of 68 games in the minors. He has jumped up from A to AA and should be applauded but he will need time to develop behind the plate.

Can the Sox add pieces this year that will make them a World Series contender or just help them possibly make the playoffs? The answer to that determines how much value you give up to get that piece or pieces.

This team is maybe a year away more likely 2, from being a serious WS contender. Until that time comes you can't be giving away any of your top prospects and I will be very disappointed if they do.
