Tuesday at 04:19 PM2 days From MLB.com today, under the heading of biggest surprises:2. The White Sox swap for Luis CastilloWith six healthy starters and top pitching prospect Kade Anderson waiting in the wings, the Mariners were prime candidates to trade a starter. Surprisingly, they moved Luis Castillo, who was having a career-worst year with a 5.06 ERA and 78 ERA+, without having to eat a single cent of his contract ($24.2 million salary through next season, plus a $25 million vesting option for 2028).Chicago offset some costs by sending back reliever Seranthony Domínguez ($10 million owed next year), but the White Sox are still taking on a massive financial risk. They gain a proven veteran leader, but one who hasn't pitched significantly above league average in years.

The Sox added $13.5M to their payroll (in both 26 & 27 combined) with the Castillo trade. That is literal mice nuts in the MLB terms.

Hays has an $8 mutual option so likely minus that . So it's likely with who's here at the end of the season and a lot of guys pre Arb , might be looking at close to $100M.The 6 players areCastilloMurakamiBenintendiHicks HaysKay

There isn't a chance his vesting option hits and in the world where he pitches 180+ innings it probably would be a tradeable deal. For all we know the salary floor will be implemented and we need to add another 50 million for 2027.

Just because James (or anyone, really) maybe has a couple times doesn't make their opinion all that much more valuable. Ultimately, no one knows these guys better than the Sox, so I am good with moving them.
Tuesday at 07:32 PM2 days I have never seen Bonemer play. I guess if the Sox traded him for a questionable player, I wouldn't be able to complain. I like James, but his argument makes no sense.

10 hours ago10 hr I'm pretty sure the idea was to bring in a veteran starting pitcher that would go longer than Fedde.....Castillo needs to be better.Walking a weak 8th place hitter when you have a 4-0 lead is gross.
1 hour ago1 hr https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/castilu02.shtmlHoly statistics!!!For pretty much 9 seasons, his bWAR has been declining.Peak was clearly 2019-2023...obviously 2020 was the shortened Covid season.2018 is the only anomaly. Then the slight improvements from 2024 to 2025 before the collapse this season.2024 1.92025 2.3 Right now, it's at -0.9!!!Prior to 2026, never negative.Note: don't ever buy high priced pitchers on the wrong side of their career decline Edited 1 hour ago1 hr by caulfield12

I totally understand not liking the trade or thinking they should've done something more or different. Be honest in the assessment though. Not mentioning Seranthony Dominguez is disingenuous. They took on Castillo's money but they got rid of Dominguez and his salary within the scope of the deal. It's like $12-13 million for Castillo in 2027 essentially and he'd probably get close to that on the open market still. Keith Law didn't write it. It was someone named Johnny Flores Jr. I couldn't find him or I would've tagged him.

This implication that Dominguez is worth zero dollars so his entire salary is an off-set is tough to accept. The Sox lost the player they valued as a 10 million/yr player 6 months ago. That's not some net monetary gain that limits the cost of Castillo on the open market.

It means the Sox still aren't willing to take on dollars to defray prospect cost. The logic is if Dominguez really is a great contract to dump, that the inclusion of Boston Smith is what bought it, and that if they had been willing to take on dollars, Smith would still be a Baron. I don't see that as a positive.
3 minutes ago3 min Still a 7% decline from GRF to Seattle would be expected.Only surprise is GRF not playing as an offense-first environment, actually 22nd.But there’s still August and early September to go.Also holds true for 2024-25.GRF 19th for offense, Seattle consistently the very worst.baseballsavant.comStatcast Park FactorsBaseball Savant Edited just now1 min by caulfield12
