You know this how?

I'm not the only one speculating about Ibanez. His OPS+ has increased steadily since age 34 (115) to a whopping 150 at age 37. Most players don't put up 10-35 points above their career average at that age without pharmaceutical enhancement.

I was asking what he would get after this season if he was a FA. Hunter and GM Jr. were signed in different economic times.

You're wrong.

Rios was given an extension before ST last year, aka the 2007-2008 offseason, the same offseason Hunter signed. And it was only the year before that when GMJr signed (the 06-07 offseason).

But why does that matter? We couldn't have signed him for less in the off season. We also could be stuck with Fukedome or Hunter for the same money. Its not like our payroll is 40 million, we still have money left even after Peavy/Rios additions.

I'm not wrong. I'm asking a hypothetical question because the Sox just picked him up for nothing. Rios was given this contract in a different economic time.

Ibanez got 3 years $31 million. In fact, Manny and Texiera were the only non pitchers to get more than $31 million. Rios is owed $60 million. He's got himself a good deal. He's not the hitter Ibanez is.

just get to the point and state your beef with Rios. You are bringing up players that arent even closely related to what Rios is just to prove a point, I am just not sure what your point actually is. Rios's contract should be compared with Rowand and Hunter, not over the hill corner OF'er/DH's on their last legs in a recession.

Well, I was against it, but now I'm going to root for this guy. He is way overpaid for sub-800 OPS production, but I hope to God that he earns his money over the life of the contract.

Some positive thinking for you:

1993 - Sox pull Ellis Burks (OF) off of the scrap heap - he puts up a 114 OPS+ and helps the Sox to the playoffs

1994 - Sox pull Julio Franco (DH) off of the scrap heap - he puts up a 136 OPS+ and helps the Sox to the division lead in the strike season

1994 - Sox pull Darrin Jackson (OF) off of the scrap heap - he puts up a 111 OPS+ and has one of the best seasons of his career

1995 - Sox pull Mike Devereaux (OF) off the the scrap heap - he puts up a 115 OPS+ and gets flipped mid-season.

1995 - Sox pull Dave Martinez (OF) off of the scrap heap - he puts up OPS+ of 113, 122 (career high) and 104 on the cheap for 3 years

1996 - Sox pull Danny Tartabull (OF) off of the scrap heap - he puts up OPS+ of 111 and knocks in 101 runs.

1996 - Sox pull Harold Baines (DH) off of the scrap heap - he puts up OPS+ of 132

1999 - Sox pull Chris Singleton (OF) off of the scrap heap - he puts up OPS+ of 105 and locks down a shaky CF position for playoff team in 2000

2005 - Sox pull Jermaine Dye (OF) off of the scrap heap - the rest is history

2008 - Sox pull Carlos Quentin (OF) off of the scrap heap - TCQ.

So the Sox have had a great history of picking up discarded OF over the last 15-20 years. I hope it continues and isn't a Cory Snyder situation.

Cowley says Kenny was trying to get Rios before the deadline anyway. Puts the "block Detroit" stuff to rest.

I never put any stock into that speculation anyway. Rios was too good of a fit for us when I heard the news.

And in the next offseason it will be a different economic time than this one. Whats the point? This offseason was an outlier?
