We tried to and still are trying to move Viciedo to fit Melky under our payroll. One way or the other, Viciedo's contract won't be on our books come opening day.

Now if we want to sign more free agents, we'd need to move John Danks, and good luck finding any takers for him.

I definitely think we'll move Viciedo, but it has nothing to do with Melky's salary. Hahn made it pretty clear that Reinsdorf agreed to increase payroll in order to sign Melky. Any savings by moving Viciedo will likely go towards adding bench pieces that are better fits than Tank. I really don't think we have to clear salary at this point.

In the world that we live in with Twitter, I have no idea how nobody knows who the team is. I would be VERY surprised if it was us though

Which if you compare our payroll of $90 mil last year, we do now have an increased payroll. Who knows how much of a leash JR has given Hahn. We could already be past our limits with Melky and moving DV would be a move to scale it back to JR's range.

I'll trust our resident insider sources who have come through more times than not when they say we are done with major signings. That plus there are absolutely no rumors of Kang to the Sox put our chances at slim to none.

Can two teams win the posting with a tie bid and then they negotiate the contract and he picks?

The Phillies or Nationals may be frontrunners, a source tells Chris Cotillo of SB Nation. Philadelphia has scouted Kang, and they traded incumbent shortstop Jimmy Rollins last week. Of course, we will update you when we hear more substantive news.

I would much rather have gotten this guy than Melky. Coulda signed this guy and somebody like Aoki for cheap.

I really hope we won the bid on Kang. He's obviously a bit of a risk, but I prefer the gamble on him bringing that power over than Carlos Sanchez or Micah Johnson starting at 2B for us. I like Micah, but I am highly interested in the upside Kang has.

Also, 11 teams are now out.

I like how the bid was $5,002,015. "2015", that's very cute.

Yankees

Mets

Angels

Dodgers

Padres

Orioles

Blue Jays

Giants

Braves

Twins

Rays

Rangers

Cardinals

So we almost have half the majors down. This is fun.

Well we have a 1 in 17 chance of winning the bid with 13 teams saying they are out.

Greg, when you take ridiculous stances like this, it would be better if you explain them. Melky Cabrera is a better player than Aoki and is far safer than Kang. Have you ever seen Kang play or have you just seen his numbers from the KBO?

Does the team that won the bid know they won yet? I don't understand how this has operated so silently.

Ya this really is quite bizarre.

I'm not even sure I want this guy. More just the excitement of these things, than anything else. I got confused and was thinking the 5 mill means that's their contract. Not sure I want a $10 mil flier.

The winning team has to know they won, doesnt the window to sign a player start when the bid is accepted?

NK could have intercepted it for more leverage against "The Interview"

The fact the winning bid was $5 million pretty much tells you that no one thinks his numbers will translate to MLB. If they did, there would have been another zero on that bid.

Could it be the winning team isn't really that excited about winning the bid and is slow playing the whole scenario? If you announce it with fanfare you are under pressure to get a deal done.

Supposedly, we're going to find out today according to MLB Network.
