He will always play good defense, though it is likely that he starts to lose a step at this point as he ages and his defensive value will come back to the pack. The bat is never going to be enough to justify what he is going to get. I hope the Cubs sign him, I would love to see him be an anchor around their neck in three years when he is making $20M + a season.

December 11, 201510 yr The stats driving his price (defense and base running) to me are more of a gray area that are being rewarded for uncertain future rewards. If the cub sign him for 10/$200M this is yet another step back for their process as I think every move they have made this off-season will lead to a regression in the overall scope of the process.

I can't explain how much I agree with this... Hell, I'd give him a 10 year/$250 million deal with a player opt-out after year 4. Then the Sox would have him in his age 26-30 seasons and then he'll be gone.

Yes he will be 29, but players that rely on their athleticism as much as he does to be productive begin to decline much faster than others. These are the same arguments that were made when the Jays gave albatross contracts to Wells and Rios only to have to regret it almost immediately. I was having a discussion with Kalapse and he convinced me that the player opt-out, especially for younger guys, is actually a good thing, since you get the prime years without as much of the longer-term risk. Plus the opt-out gives them that additional "hunger" towards the opportunity to strike another massive deal.

If I had an opt out, it would probably be a 7 year deal with an opt-out after year 3 or 4, but I agree with you, you have to be careful. No matter what you do, you can't bank any assumption that they will take the opt-out so you have to be comfortable with the thought of going the full way. 10 years with the Sox payroll constraints doesn't make a lot of sense, imo.
