would love for the sox to swoop in and make a last minute bid and win.

That would be some surprise for the fan base. You add Heyward and I'd be willing to give up Tim Anderson for Todd Frazier.

I know it's a pipe dream but I'd go to war with that team.

I appreciate your hope for a miracle but I'm not expecting one. I for one would like to see Upton sign but worry about how a $200 mil deal for Heyward would affect an Upton contract.

i can understand everyone like for upton, but he caring a rep of difficult prima donna.

but those are rumors... lawrie didn't carry this rep. the only one now in mlb who is avail is pedro alvarez. i just don't know.

I want a strong defensive team. We haven't seen that on the Southside in such a long time. Defense and pitching wins ballgames.

For how many years is that $200 million offer?

I'm guessing anywhere from 7-10.

Let's just not discuss the sexism issue here in PHT or this thread anymore. Drop it or create a thread in Buster or SLaM. We thank you for your support.

The thread has been cleaned up. Lets stick on topic here. If you want to talk the other issue, those posts have been moved to a separate thread in the buster.

$200 million for 7 to 10 years seems like an overpay to me. He is not an elite offensive player.

Great defense in RF is not that hard to find. Moreover, he is not the solution to our need for a clean up hitter.

But then, I've said that already. I'd rather spend that money on Chris Davis, DH him and put Trayce Thompson in RF for the defense.

If we add Heyward for $200 million I'd still not be happy with Anderson and co for Frazier. There's just no match there.

i usually have something that i will pipe in and say, but for the life of me, i am at a lost.

only reasoning i can think of..... it is what the market is.

i know what you mean, but if the sox did pick up an ace kind of of'er like heywar or upton or someone else thru a trade.

i can see if the sox will insist on 1 of cincy promising ss to be included into the pkg or trade for a young ss prospect who is at least 2 yrs away then make that trade with cincy.

fyi anderson is a better ss prospect than anything cincy has in the next 3 yrs. but they do have some really promising ss .

I don't understand why Cincy would do that. They probably don't need to.

154 games, 13 HR, 60 RBI, 23 SB, .293 BA and a Gold Glove OF. Just wanted to take another look at Heyward's stats from last year.

$200 mil. Wow!! I guess it truly is what the market is.

I think his age is the big selling point but I think he is really being oversold as well.

New mystery team involved.

New mystery team involved.

It's the White Sox, of course.

So it's Cubs, Cards, Angels. Thought mystery team was Nats. There's another one?

The agent always puts that out there as a wild card for all the teams that may or may not actually be involved.

I always wonder. It's like in a fantasy option. You swear you won't overpay for a player, then when it seems like it's winding down you go hogwild and go $5 over.

Since 2013 Heyward is 13th in all of baseball in defensive WAR among all position players with at least 2000 INN (about 1.5 full seasons), sandwiched between Alcides Escobar and Billy Hamilton. The only outfielders ahead of him are centerfielders Carlos Gomez, Lorenzo Cain and Juan Lagares the next closest after Hamilton are AJ Pollock and Leonys Martin, the next OF comes in at 40th.

Just focusing on rightfield and reducing it to 1000 INN to include more players, here's your enormous list positive DEF WAR RF:

39.3 Jason Heyward

21.0 Shane Victorino

11.9 Chris Denorfia

11.6 Geardo Parra

8.0 Ichico

3.8 Josh Reddick

1.5 Kole Calhoun

1.5 Daniel Nava

RF with a 10+ DRS:

69 Jason Heyward

31 Gerardo Parra

27 Josh Reddick

19 Marlon Byrd

17 Ichiro

16 Jay Bruce

14 Yasiel Puig

13 Curtis Granderson

RF with a 10+ UZR:

56.0 Jason Heyward

24.2 Gerardo Parra

20.1 Ichiro

19.4 Josh Reddick

16.2 Kole Calhoun

14.3 Hunter Pence

ALL OF with a 30+ UZR:

59.2 Jason Heyward

51.7 Lorenzo Cain

47.7 Kevin Kiermaier

46.5 Juan Lagares

40.4 Alex Gordon

35.3 Billy Hamilton

35.2 Carlos Gomez

30.8 AJ Pollock

30.7 Yoenis Cespedes

Someone described Heyward as a "good" defensive player or some such earlier in the thread, he is not merely good but ultra elite. Hence why the 32 year old Alex Gordon, who's of similar value offensively is going to get $100M+.

Is this Scioscias last last last chance to get it right?

I would imagine so.

Great post Kalapse. Bill James in his handbook always raved about his runs saved capability. I think last year and the year before that he saved something like 23 runs.

The problem is that he will likely not be able to sustain that defensive prowess for the latter years of a 10 year contract.

A good hitter might be able to produce big offensive production in his 30's, but elite defense is a little tougher.

Give him an opt out every year after year 4 and he likely only plays 4-5 years of that contract.
