I really hope he changes his approach soon. Currently, if he isn't hitting HR at a high clip, he's kind of worthless as a player. His dWAR is now 0.1 in 2026. Intangibly, his high K rate hurts us in SF and PO situations. His walk rate isn't nearly high enough to compensate for the K rate. I'm really worried he's going to be exploited out of the league in a not-dissimilar-to-Daniel Palka kind of way (shudder)

I think if we had sat there and said, ok add Mason Miller, Tarik Skubal, Adley Ruschman and Casey Mize, spent essentially our top 15 prospects of non-26 drafted guys to do it, I still am not sure I would have put us in that top level of teams, and at that cost, we give up a lot of reinforcements for 27-30. I get feeling it isn't worth it.

I think trading away Tatis, Semien and Bassitt for basically nothing broke Sox fan brains because the prospects traded at the deadline seldom amount to anything. I'd be shocked if Mason Adams becomes anything more than a decent long reliever. It should absolutely tell you something that the Sox are desperate for starting pitching and they still decided to trade him. All of their acquisitions were acquired with the future (draft pick - Gonzalez has been terrible since the trade) and next year (Brazoban, Castillo, Doyle) in mind as well. They didn't think going all in this year was wise given what they needed and what they had in the minors to go get it. I think that's the right call. This isn't saying you shouldn't be able to criticize what they've done either. I get grabbing Doyle and Brazoban. If they can get a decent platoon partner for Peters from Doyle that's a huge win. Just from defense alone you're looking at 2+ WAR from CF with those two, even if Peters's offense regresses. Brazoban hopefully returns from injury able to not give up a run every outing. Castillo I sure hope they can help him figure something out, and that's not a move I would've made, but I guess I see the rationale. Boston Smith is also likely a backup catcher at best, if he even sticks there, so I doubt they gave up much of anything.

Precisely. I don’t think the approach reflected arrogance but caution and a pragmatic acceptance that this fun, way-ahead-of-schedule team is far from a legitimate World Series contender.

The easiest thing to do would be to put Bonemer in RF, Montgomery in CF, and Peters in LF. But they’re not doing that for a reason. Whats the reason? IDK. All I can come up with is that they see something there.

Ron Kittle hit 40 something in one season, and 50 the next before his call up in 82.

When you look at how Montgomery, Antonacci, Murakami, and (prior to the last week or so) Peter’s have been preforming, it only further justifies not going nuts at deadline imo. if those guys were all still clicking and they were losing games 11-10 I’d get it.

It might be, but I have to wonder if it's partly just a way to make him (and maybe themselves) feel like they are keeping him in a premium position. I'm not that optimistic that even if he has a natural knack for the outfield, that he'd actually do a good job for a CF even if he might do decently in the corners. At least on the timeline that we hope his bat pushes to MLB. My own projection (which counts for nothing!) is that he's probably going to land in the corner OF until I get further info. So if he looks like not-a-disaster in CF, we're on track.

I do think looking at us versus the other contenders, it is reasonable to think that GetzCo looked at us vs the others and thought of how hard it would be to bridge the gap to be World Series level versus just backing into the playoffs and to decide that it wasn't worth what he would give up in the next few years to get there. I would agree with that sentiment.

Putting him in CF instead of a corner spot would suggest that he’s shown them he can potentially handle the transition, and have a decent chance stick there. The last thing you want to do is to jerk around your (until further notice) top prospect from position to position.

I agree. They are not calling him up. Cynically, I wonder if the switch to OF might be a way to get both Bonemer and Cholowsky into the AFL. As for whether he’ll stick in CF, I am also skeptical but he’s faster than you think and he’s a real ballplayer. Like Antonacci, he’ll work hard and be fearless. I try to never underestimate this guy.

I think it's possible that they have no idea whether he can be a good outfielder, but they may be pessimistic about his ability on the infield which could lead them to evaluate his other options. I don't know how pessimistic they are but I feel pretty confident that they doubt anyone will ever call him "good" on defense in any of the infield spots. So pair that with what currently feels like a crowded MLB infield and you want to see if he can run down a fly ball. I take it as a slight vote of confidence on his foot speed which reportedly is measuring up better than people expected. It's a nice tool to have for a novice outfielder.

When Ishbia takes over, I hope he pours money into scouting. They need to pour resources into getting good latin american players, too. But, that being said, I don't get this table. The Sox have almost twice as many scouts as the Cubs? That doesn't pass the smell test unless I'm missing something.

One of Sam, Colson, Chase is probably the odd man out and out of those guys it's easiest to see Sam imo. Love him to death but not sure he's a legit MLB 2B and in LF his value isn't that great. Other thing I could see would be selling high on Peters for SP and keeping the young IF core together. We'll see, good problem to have.

Maybe Peters is our version of Otto Lopez. Marlins picked him up off the waiver wire and he's been an absolute stud, already one of the franchise's WAR leaders in 3 seasons. Really nice pickup, I was annoyed that he made the MLB roster and boy was I wrong.

Indeed. They must see some solid ability there to contemplate taking him off the infield. The biggest part of success as a team is putting people in the positions to succeed

If Bonemer can play CF well, it can greatly approve your outfield defense if Peters moves to LF. As for Antonacci, he could be the odd man out and trade bait.
