The best record Houston can currently end up with is 83-79. They have tie-breaker over the Sox. Thus the Sox need to get to 84 wins to finish ahead of Houston. Magic number = 4. The best record Texas can finish with is 84-78. The Sox hold the tie-breaker over Texas so they only have to tie them to win the WC. Thus the Sox need to get to 84 wins. Magic number = 4.

Easiest way for me to figure it out is since Houston has the tie breaker over us if they go underrated the rest of the way the Astros will finish with 83 wins Sox are currently at 80 wins so need 4 more wins (or Houston loses) to not be caught

That is one of the three games when all is said and done you can make the case that cost the Sox the divisional title and the #2 seed. The others of course were the game in Boston where they were one strike away from winning and the game in Cleveland Tuesday when the same thing took place. Two more wins for a winning season.

The Sox would win the pennant by four games over the Boston Americans with a record of 83-53. Unfortunately, the World Series didn’t start until 1903, so this was the best that the Sox could do. The Sox had a very balanced lineup, which was led by outfielders William "Dummy" Hoyt and Fielder Jones, and scored the most runs in the league.
