  1. QUOTE (FT35 @ Apr 5, 2018 -> 08:11 PM) Not a bad solution--I like Ed a lot. And I don't mean to bash Steve and Jason as people...I know it sounds like I totally just did, lol. But I'm sure they are nice guys and do a lot of good things for the team. Just not my idea of what I look for in a good broadcast. Far from it actually. Too millenial, no grit. Too much candy in a meat-earter's world. I understand it could be just my personality...but I've been a Sox fan for nearly 30 years--there are a few things that are consistent traits of most other Sox fans...we are gritty, get dirty, Ozzieball, go-go hustle, run through the wall, long-ball dagger fans. That's the White Sox brand, that's the White Sox people. Our whole breed can be summed up in this 1 minute video: Here's an exercise for you all...take the events of this game, Konerko pouring his GUTS out on the field for us--literally encompassing what we all stand for--and then imagine adding the following comentary on top of this clip...something along the same lines of: "...and Konerko gets hit in the face with that pitch and is down, hopefully he's ok...you know Steve, I wondered whether Rick Hahn has ever been to Hahnville--now we know the answer to this because we pulled some strings and emptied our resources tank and had his secretary call him at home to answer this dire question so we can get to the truth, as Konerko gets up and heads to first...the truth is...Rick Hahn has NOT been to Hahnville--a trip we may need to make happen someday. Now wouldn't THAT be amazing? Rick Hahn...in Hahnville!? SIMPLY INCREDIBLE" That would be simply insulting. And if that's a new direction where our brand is going???? Hmmm...serious evaluation time. I just don't think that's the real plan. I love this post and all the posts on this thread. However I think you guys have set way too high a standard in a medium that is full of nasal-voiced, TV game show voiced shills who work for the team. The Sox announcers talk in regular conversational voices. Stone is brilliant like right now he's talking about Miggy and doing so with so much knowledge. Yes the two joke around some but listen to any games on mlb.com and you will hear a lot of crap. The Sox have guys you can listen to. I'm not lying when I say I cannot listen to the Royals TV broadcast. The TV announcers are that bad. I can listen to two of the radio announcers but when the other two guys come on I have to turn the channel when driving.
  2. I think we need a player like Saladino in the lineup. Assuming he won't be used much, here's my optimal lineup. We need some non power hitters to set the table. Leury cf (no Engel) Moncada 2b Avi rf Abreu 1b Davidson 1B Anderson ss Delmonico LF Castillo c Sanchez 3B or Saladino or Sanchez 3B Anderson ss Moncada 2B Abreu 1B Avi rf Davidson DH Delmonico lf Castillo c Leury/Engel cf
  3. QUOTE (Quin @ Apr 5, 2018 -> 04:45 AM) Why in the world is Nate Jones a nemesos. I changed it; nemesis was the wrong word. I've blasted both before: Nate for his delivery and Soria for being a stiff.
  4. Nice win. I know home runs are flying out of parks the last two years but some of the Sox homers this season have truly been crushed. My faves: Davidson, Abreu did well. And the guys I've express disdain toward: Nate and Soria did well too. I hope Fulmer is great.
  5. QUOTE (raBBit @ Apr 4, 2018 -> 09:42 PM) I have no issue with the broadcast other than the cheap jokes. We get it Stone you're obsessed with money and Benetti knows it. No more s***ty jokes please. Man if all threads were like this thread ... great comments. I do agree upon reading everyone's posts maybe Benetti/Stone joke around a little too much. But it's all a breath of fresh air compared to the broadcasts on the nights Hawk was in a bad mood. Hawk was almost dysfunctional. When Wimpy was his full time partner didn't he tire of Wimpy and snap at him a lot? But the last couple seasons when Wimpy subbed for Stoney, they were great broadcasts. It almost seemed Hawk tired of Stoney which is ridiculous cause Stone is great. Hawk was like Jeckyll/Hyde. If he was happy it was a delight to hear his call of games.
  6. So many good lines/posts in this thread you'd think this board is full of brilliant people. Seriously.
  7. QUOTE (Charlie Haeger's Knuckles @ Apr 4, 2018 -> 05:32 PM) While I generally like the new combo.... I have a couple gripes. I think announcers would take a line like this anyday. As long as you overall like the duo ... there always will be some gripes.
  8. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Apr 4, 2018 -> 05:30 PM) Yea he needs to just talk less at times. Focus on the action and little things on the field or otherwise just call the game. Stop with the constant asides. Agree 100% with you as well DA. It's a baseball game not a comedy routine. Over three hours, 160+ games a year it gets tiresome. There must be a rulebook on announcing. You aren't allowed to have much silence. Any broadcasters out there or experts on the field? Cmon, you have to talk, talk talk. How can anybody not love the story last night Stone told about his bonus for winning the Cy Young? That is GOOD announcing in a 14-5 game. You got to talk, folks, if u are a paid announcer.
  9. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 4, 2018 -> 05:17 PM) I think he's fine, but for some reason, he and Steve seem to think they are at Zanies doing 3 hours of stand up. Not everything has to be a clever joke. If they cut out the bit about trying to be cleverly hysterical all the time, they could be funny and provide quality game content. The current style doesn't bother me so much I can't listen, but it seems obvious it is 2 guys trying too hard to be funny for 3 hours straight. Just call the game and let the humor happen. Don't force it. And this is a good post IMO. I can buy this criticism about standup comedy.
  10. You said it all late in your post. He calls the game "naturally" with Stone. I can actually watch multi innings with these guys unlike the Royals. If for some reason I tune into a game I must immediately turn it off on the TV side because of the game show host type voices of announcers. Stone and Benetti are having a conversation (just like Hawk and Stone BTW; Chicago has done a nice job of finding real people to announce, not nasal game show hosts/homers). By homer, I don't mean rooting for the ball to go over the fence or making no pretense you want the Sox to win. By homer I mean the Royals radio guys gushing about the next great homestand and Minnesota coming in (they come in 10 times, my gosh) and Cleveland coming in, selling tickets. And the radio guys gushing about the WS titles, I guess the term is they are obnoxious salesmen more than "homers." I can't take the selljob and must turn it off unless veteran Denny Matthews is making the call. My point is ... Benetti is great. Normal voice. Knows the team. Knows the organization. Has great rapport with the color man. Does not do the "fake voice/game show voice thing" and is a homer in that he wants the team to win and all that but not a homer salesperson telling us how great everything is in Soxdom at all times. Stone is a god, small g. How can anybody not love the broadcast team? Have u ever heard Steve Physioc of the Royals? Fake voice. Royals can do no wrong. Royals are great. The groundskeeper is great. The scoreboard is great. KC is down 7-1 but a great homestand is coming up. GIVE ME BENETTI AND STONE any day of any week. Or Hawk if he wants to come back. Benetti is so thorough he should read this board. If he does, let me say: Keep on keeping on, sir. You are a very good announcer.
  11. QUOTE (SonofaRoache @ Apr 4, 2018 -> 02:33 AM) I don't understand what the benefit of tanking would be this year. We have a lot of high end talent and a top 5 pick this year. We need to start growing for personal reasons and to attract free agents. If we are indeed tanking again, I don't see us competing until 2021 at the earliest when the players would have grown and learned how to win a little. I hate tanking but we are indeed tanking. Pitching ugh and only 4-5 good hitters max on a given day. I think in Sox management eyes benefit of tanking is another good draft pick and probably trading one of either Avi or Abreu at the break along with Nate and Soria if he's serviceable. QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Apr 4, 2018 -> 02:48 AM) It's games like tonight that should pump the breaks on some who were talking about "contending" or maybe sneaking into the second wild card spot. That's not happening with this pitching staff especially the bullpen bums. I agree with u Lip Man.
  12. QUOTE (StrykerSox @ Apr 4, 2018 -> 12:44 AM) Missed his last AB, so this is more a delayed statement from earlier, but I’ve always been baffled about why Moncada excites people. Strikes out waaaaay too much. Think Kopech will be the actual prize from the Sale trade, and it won’t even be close. Also, is there anyone left who thinks Saladino doesn’t suck? I called that one a while ago. I worshiped Saladino his first year in Chicago. I agree he blows now. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Apr 4, 2018 -> 12:45 AM) Please take Matt Davidson out of the cleanup spot. I don't like our lineup. I do like Ricky, but please, Ricky, re-do the lineup. No Avi at second; No Matt at fourth. Time for a do-over. QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 4, 2018 -> 01:49 AM) The ball is so juiced I agree. My own contribution to this thread: My gawd Infante sucks. I truly believe Fathom could strike a double off him. That's batting practice pitching, baby. I can't wait til we contend again. I expect losses and don't get mad anymore. That's unhealthy.
  13. QUOTE (iamshack @ Apr 3, 2018 -> 10:58 PM) Yeah, I mean the Astros and Cubs perfected tanking. The White Sox perfected the rebuild. It's too early to deem anything final regarding success or failure of the rebuild. Players must now be developed; more must be done with the roster.
  14. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Apr 3, 2018 -> 11:15 PM) It actually makes perfect sense. Get him more PAs. Let him hit in front of Jose. But second is for guys who advance the runner not guys who drive the ball like Avi.
  15. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Apr 3, 2018 -> 09:10 PM) Renteria mixing up the bottom of the lineup: 1. Moncada, 2B 2. A. Garcia, RF 3. Abreu, 1B 4. Davidson, DH 5. Castillo, C 6. Anderson, SS 7. Engel, CF 8. Saladino, 3B 9. Delmonico, LF I like Ricky R. I don't want him fired, even when we get good. However ... Avi batting second is ridiculous. It makes no sense. I'd prefer Sally or Anderson second even if Anderson doesn't walk ever. Do u all agree this is beyond absurd to have Avi hit second? Move him down where he belongs before he turns back into the old lousy version of Avi.
  16. QUOTE (Tony @ Apr 3, 2018 -> 03:10 AM) Always get a laugh when I don’t watch the game, but try and scan the gamethread after the fact. We ALL knew the Sox were going to bad this season. What do people think these losses are going to look like? I read it after the fact, too. This loss was pretty standard as far as what to expect this season. It actually was rather pretty considering the nice start by Lopez and decent defense and two HRs from catcher.
  17. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 3, 2018 -> 01:32 AM) Well, the main point tonight is Lopez pitched well...or we're no longer satisfied with moral victories? I'll take that. I watched some of it and thought he pitched well. I thought our defense looked pretty good too til 3B had the boot late. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Apr 3, 2018 -> 02:02 AM) I think the total rebuild is over Not yet, sir. Our lineup is rather weak. Right now with our lineup and bullpen we're still a 20-under-500 team. Our starting rotation isn't too spiffy either. It's be nice, though. I did buy mlb.com cause I am a Sox fan.
  18. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Apr 3, 2018 -> 01:05 AM) Didn't greg call Castillo a bum today? Never fails. I don't call Sox players bums. Not me. It wasn't me. What are u thinking? You know my history on here.
  19. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Apr 2, 2018 -> 07:47 PM) This is a general comment and not a defense in this Fox case at all, but the swiftness with which social media outrage can destroy a person is scary. Every case is different and some are very justifiable, but say one thing or get caught on cell phone video in a compromising situation, and within 24 hours you can lose everything. Employment terminated, public name scorned, the works. And I don't know what you can do to get it back cause it will always be available via a simple Google search. It's crazy, especially with the react now, justify later mentality that social media helps instigate. True. Kathy Griffin got buried. I'll give Kathy credit. She's rebounded nicely and can continue her career. Upon reflection (I'm sure I wanted her ruined at first) all she did was issue a Warhol-esque type statement. Not worth ending her career over the bloody head of Trump thing. Is Kathy one of the first to get buried by Twitterworld and TV world, regroup and come back nicely? QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 2, 2018 -> 08:45 PM) Even the Catholics have apologized for their portrayal of Magdeline as a prostitute. As a Catholic, I don't get worked up either way. I know Jesus is without sin, so that means he didn't have sex with her, but if he did? I wouldn't think that would be a bad thing. I mean most young-ish priests nowadays acknowledged they dated a lot in high school and college and certainly had sex in many of those cases. It's all part of life (those who broke the law via the assault cases obviously should be thrown in jail forever). ... Again, I know Jesus is without sin, and Catholics consider premarital sex a sin, but I don't get worked up about whatever relationship Christ had with Mary M.
  20. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Apr 2, 2018 -> 08:09 PM) Moncada Avi Abreu Davidson Castillo Anderson Leury Yolmer Engel No Delmonico against the LHP As somebody who never follows spring training, i now can see why we are picked to have a horrible record. Castillo, Anderson Leury, Yolmer and Engel is a very bad final five-some hitting wise. Moncada, Avi, Abreu and Davidson must hit and hit big.
  21. QUOTE (yesterday333 @ Apr 2, 2018 -> 08:22 PM) HAHA if you go over to the futuresox side of the board you would see how much angst there is. I am so tired of hearing about the mistake. I can forgive him for a mistake. I just wish they'd have found a way to dump Shields. Pay half his salary or something to get him out of The Cell or Grate Field.
  22. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 2, 2018 -> 07:07 PM) I guess I don't know why these adults think slamming a high school kid who survives a massacre that killed 17, perhaps including some of his or her friends, is going to be good for them in the long run. Some nuts will jump on the bandwagon, but the vast majority will be appalled. This woman apparently forgot about advertisers, and hopefully it ends her media career. I have no idea what she is thinking, what the musician was thinking, what Frank Stallone was thinking. How the hell are they going to benefit? The people loving what they tweet generally aren't their target audience or the target audience of any advertisers. Amen, Dick. You are da man.
  23. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Apr 2, 2018 -> 07:45 PM) Holy s***, this couldn't be further from the truth. Perhaps some people just don't want to talk about it anymore because the trade happened 2 years ago, has been talked to death around here and the outcome really, really sucks so it's not super fun to talk about it. Constantly invoking that name is basically torture at this point, I've blocked the word Tatis on Twitter because I don't want to hear about it anymore, there's nothing I can do about it and hearing about it is not fun, sports are supposed to be fun. Great points. I personally didn't sense too much angst about the loss of Tatis cause Sox have so many solid to great prospects coming up soon. I figure most people just figure there's bound to be a mistake or two made in the rebuild. But if I'm wrong, I can accept that fact.
  24. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Apr 2, 2018 -> 04:12 PM) Free speech doesnt mean it comes without consequences... Her vacation is about to become permanent. True. She has the right to say whatever she wants, but insulting that kid was awful. That kid is to be praised not scorned IMO. Shame on her.
  25. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Apr 2, 2018 -> 02:09 PM) The entire evangelical base was super angry about JCS. Its been around for 40 years and was pretty universally hated by fundamental christians and was being bashed by the same people on the internet last night. I watched it and it was phenomenal. This is a pretty moronic statement. You not only have entire channels calling Muslims crazy and evil, but you have the president echoing the same exact views. Let me know when he gets taken off the air. Are Catholics considered evangelical? Just asking. Haven't heard either way. As a Catholic who tries to abide by many/most of the rules, I was thrilled with the show. Great music. Great acting and I like when the story of the death/resurrection of Christ gets told so people can see it and not mock us for believing in it. I can picture the Joy Behar's and Bill Maher's watching that and being furious that believers are enjoying the show. I love the fact the cast included people of all races. That was cool. QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Apr 2, 2018 -> 02:44 PM) Wow it's amazing how you are able to make it through life with all that oppression you face as a white, Christian male. I'm not talking about me. I feel no oppression. I'm talking about the people that mock my religion and that's OK. You can mock a Catholic on TV or Christian on TV easily and get away with it. Talk about the invisible man in the sky we pray to, etc. You know, a lot of famous people who are beloved by the left also are believers. My idol, Jimmy Carter, is a staunch believer in God. Obama is a believer and his wife a believer. Reagan had a minister visit him every morning I believe. I am not moaning about oppression. I am moaning about the unfairness of my religion getting mocked on TV and radio all the time and those people don't get fired. And they'd be fired for going after other faiths. Joy Behar said we are guilty of mental illness and kept her job. Tulsa do you think it's OK to blast Catholics? You must admit people don't even bat an eye if they hear a Cathlolic joke or rip of the Cathlolic faith, the entire Christian faith? That's why I loved the publicity for believers last night in a well-acted, awesomely sung show telling the story of Jesus. If they got a few facts wrong, who cares? I love it. p.s. I was gonna start a thread on JC Superstar Sunday night but I didn't want to cause any firestorm, proving again I ain't no troll.
