  1. I really can't see Blalock costing all that much. Seems like a situation where Boras would let him take a 1 year deal to up his value, but I doubt he'd let him do that as a DH.
  2. Of course it depends on the pitchers given up but this works for me. Pierre for 2 years at $4mil pern(Olney says $3mil in 2010, $5mil in 2011), then hopefully by 2012 Mitchell is ready to step into the leadoff role. I do wonder though, if they were already at their payroll limit, and they've added another $7mil between Pierre and Putz, if these come at the expense of dumping Bobby.
  3. Where's the love for the last couple episodes of Curb? Some of the best TV I've seen in a few years. Having said that, I can now cancel HBO.
  4. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Nov 27, 2009 -> 10:35 PM) When you're asked directly if you used and you refuse to give an answer you're not going to get a lot of sympathy. This is tricky, because you're absolutely right that he's not going to get sympathy per se for not answering. But, I personally have a hell of a lot more respect for him doing taking the fifth than I do for Samuel Sosa and Palmeiro flat-out lying, both on a legal level and more generally an ethical level. Nonetheless, the obvious implication is he did it. I went with Alomar, Blyleven, and Raines.... although NorthSide makes a solid argument for Murphy.
  5. QUOTE (lostfan @ Oct 17, 2009 -> 08:48 PM) I got Verizon FIOS installed today after I finally got them to get their s*** together with the install date. This stuff is crazy fast... I had cable internet before and I figured it was pretty fast, but when I would have my upload speed set to "unlimited" for torrents, it would get to about 250 kb/s and start choking my network so I had to throttle it down some. I got the FIOS installed and I noticed it was doing everything pretty much effortlessly at the speeds I had set, so I bumped it up a few notches, a few more notches, then I just set it to unlimited and it went up to like 2800 mb/s... that's faster than I used to be able to download on my old connection. I haven't even tried the download speed yet. Yeah man I got that earlier this month too. I literally spent about 30 minutes/night on the phone with Comcast for a couple weeks trying to get them to fix problems I had and just got sick of it. With FIOS, I pay less, get way faster internet, more HD channels, and don't have to deal with Comcast. So other than the install guy stealing my sunglasses, I'm extremely happy with FIOS.
  6. QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Oct 16, 2009 -> 11:59 AM) Interesting to see a hitting coach *gasp* actually be held accountable when his team doesn't hit! It's too bad he'll end up with the Cubs and not with the Sox. Even despite his teams struggles this year, Jaramillo has a long record of very good hitting teams, and is respected around baseball as being really good at what he does. Neither of those thoughts could be put in the same paragraph as Greg Walker, who would have been fired years ago if we had the same standard for a hitting coach that they do in Texas. Just because there is no tangible or proven way to evaluate a hitting coach and how important/not important he is doesn't mean he shouldn't be fired if the hitting goes south, although I'm not even sure I'd have fired Jaramillo since he's had such a long record of excellence there before this year. He didn't get fired. They offered him a contract (albeit a one year deal) and he declined it. So Mazzone was the end-all be-all pitching coach in Atlanta, he leaves, signs a 3 year deal with Baltimore and performs so poorly (or is a scapegoat) he's fired before the contract is even up. I'm hopeful the same thing happens with Jaramillo.

    Is Jillian hot?

Not that it makes her any more or less attractive (and I'm not sure if she's hot or not either) but she's most definitely a lesbian.
  8. QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 22, 2009 -> 12:08 PM) Congrats Gage. Get ready to spend more time on theknot.com instead of soxtalk.com hahaha so true Congrats
  9. QUOTE (SouthsideDon48 @ Sep 17, 2009 -> 12:12 PM) One can argue that, by bunting and getting the baserunner on 2nd base and letting the next batter try to hit a home run, the runner on 2nd base can still run home from 2nd if the batter hits a double to the deep outfield. If the baserunner was still on 1st base, (after the previous batter intentionally struck out) then he would've more than likely only been able to get to 3rd base on that deep double. Right, of course. You bunt to get the runner into scoring position. I was just taking the 'bunt so the next guy can try to hit a two run homer instead of a solo shot' argument to the extreme. Still, in general unless it's a 0-0 game in the 6th, I don't start thinking about bunting in the early-middle innings.... OK maybe if Sandy Koufax is on the hill I think about it in the 1st.
  10. QUOTE (SouthsideDon48 @ Sep 17, 2009 -> 11:52 AM) Using a timely bunt can help in avoiding a double-play and allowing the next batter (who might be a power hitter) to hit a home run. It's called strategy.... If your only goal in bunting is to avoid a double play so the next guy can hit a dong, why not just intentionally strikeout? That is simply not a good argument in favor of bunting. I like the threat of the bunt in the early-middle innings to draw the infield in, but in practice it's something I'd like to see only used on an infrequent basis.
  11. I said other (meaning Let It Be) but even since voting 16 seconds ago I have reconsidered, I'll go with the White Album. This is subject to change 4 times in the next 48 seconds. Paul's my guy.
  12. Obviously I'm in the minority here but I like Cowley. I hate when beat reporters just trot out the company line and spin everything positive. He definitely doesn't do this, nor is he bland like, say, Gonzalez. I like him for many of the same reasons I liked Sam Smith (albeit in a slightly different capacity).
  13. QUOTE (jenks45monster @ Aug 11, 2009 -> 04:51 PM) Brandon McCarthy and David Paisano for John Danks, Nick Masset, and Jacob Rasner. Love me some Johnny Danks. I admit that I was really pissed at the time of this deal. I couldn't believe he dealt BMAC. I'd probably say Olivo, Morse, Reed for Sweaty Freddie and Davis. I thought he overpaid at the time (per usual) but that worked out mighty fine.
  14. Nix isn't exactly making a very good case as a utility guy.
  15. We're going through a house purchase right now. From the buyer's agent side of things, I can say that it's not actually a contract you sign but rather an agreement that is not legally binding. We signed a one year exclusivity agreement that he would be our agent and if we chose to release him, it took a written notice. We were getting really frustrated and were about to go through with this until he found us a house at about the last minute. I'm assuming it's a similar deal you signed for your listing agent where you can get out of it with written notice... Different states, though, but perhaps still applicable.
  16. OK so a little weird but I'm next to positive that I was conceived that night. My parents went to the doubleheader, but left between games apparently a little scared by the goings-on. Almost 9 months to the day later, I was born. Maybe they weren't scared by the goings-on but extremely turned on? Steve Dahl musta really done it for my mom. Anyway, yeah.
  17. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 10, 2009 -> 04:14 AM) Some of my favorites, off the top of my head: Danny Wright (actually Jason Bere Lite before the injuries, won 14 games with a bloated ERA) Josh Stewart Mike Porzio Felix Diaz Jon Adkins Nick Masset Gary Glover (blast from past) Rocky Biddle (surprised he became closer for the Expos and was sort of decent one year) Sean Tracey Arnie Munoz Matt Ginter Jon Rauch Scott Eyre (not sure if he ever started or not for us...maybe he came out of the pen?) No one can compile lists of ex-Sox like you, NO ONE! Especially 1990's-early 2000's ex-Sox. Well, at least not at your frequency of compilation.
  18. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 7, 2009 -> 08:44 PM) I can agree with some of that, but lets face it, how are we gonna get work for all of Jenks, Thornton, Dotel, Linebrink, Carrasco, and now Pena? One thing I'll never complain about is having too many quality relievers. I like this move a lot. I've seen Pena pitch quite a few times and the dude has a legit 8th-9th inning arm. There's a lot of value to be had in slotting an 8th/9th inning arm in the 6th/7th innings or having elite depth in the bullpen as trade fuel.
  19. Heyman tweets that Broadway was in the proposed Peavy deal. Interesting sidenote, I guess.

    LOST!!!!

Wait aren't you all jumping the gun? Is it a for-sure thing that ABC is picking up the last season?
  21. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Apr 29, 2009 -> 07:19 PM) HA! No brainer. Like the league was going to cripple the Celtics for even a game. True. Still, it would have been nice to at least give him a flagrant type 1. He wouldn't have gotten suspended but at least it would be an acknowledgment by the league that Rondo made no play on the ball, just Miller's face. That dude's got great hands that always seem to find the ball; I find it hard to believe in that situation that he happened to miss the ball by 2 feet on a swipe that just happened to hit the shooter's face.
  22. The Cell is the only AL park in which Halladay has never won... at least according to Toronto's announcers yesterday. Keep it up.
  23. Obviously not the most important thing, but I'm curious what others think about grass mowing patterns. I'm kind of sick of the Cell's plain stripe pattern in the grass. This is no commentary on the Sodfather's fine field or the quality of his grass or drainage system, just the pattern in which it's cut. I like, for instance, what Citi Field looks like, kind of a plaid look. Fenway has a nice pattern (which they switch up with some frequency, so I liked what I happened to see last year). I like the team logos painted behind home plate or mowed into the outfield. It would be difficult to put the script Sox in the OF, but what about the sock logo? I also dig Comerica's dirt path between home and the mound.
  24. When's the last time Paulie got off to a good April start? His body language is more animated too.... not sure what that means but he looks great. Also encouraging was the second dong by CQ was basically all arms which hopefully speaks volumes about his wrist strength.
