Willie Harris
QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Jan 24, 2006 -> 12:19 PM) But their lineup isn't better than last year's like some people seem to think. I never said it was better than last years. I happen to think Edgar Renteria and Gullermo Mota for Coco Crisp (essentially that is the deal they made) is a freaking ridiculously horrid deal. Renteria didn't have a great year last year, but he's still one of the better shortstops in the game (both offensively and defensively). That said they cut payroll in that move (despite the fact they had to send cash to Atlanta). But the lineup is still one of the best, if not the best in the AL (and majors).

Willie Harris
QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Jan 24, 2006 -> 05:49 AM) He's a mediocre player who refused to learn how to play SS in Winterball, which would have kept him on the White Sox. So all he can play is 2B and he stinks in CF. Yeah, I'm so sad to see him go. ROFL, there's no way a lineup with Willie freaking Harris and Alex Cora or Alex Gonzalez being possible starters is "one of the better line-ups in baseball." Youkilis isn't a proven major league hitter yet and has no power at a power position. Are you Peter Gammons in disguise or something? Sure it is, cause it has Manny and Ortiz two of the 5 best run producers in the game (with Manny being the best of all time, imo). Plus Lowell, Trot Nixon and Coco Crisp. They got a solid lineup. If Lowell pans out it gets better.

Willie Harris
Willie is a better player than most everyone on this board gives him credit for. Considering whats out there and what the BoSox have right now, this is a nice move. I don't think they've had a very solid off-season, but they've made some interesting moves that could pay off. Harris at just over 400K is a steal, imo. Give the guy consistent playing time down in the lineup and he'll put up pretty solid numbers, steal some bases, have a solid OBP, all while playing above average defense (he's lightyears better than Guch at 2nd; I'm speaking defensively).

Reds fire GM
QUOTE(thedoctor @ Jan 24, 2006 -> 08:30 AM) rumor out this way was circulating that the indians offered the reds jake westbrook for austin kearns. supposedly o'brien turned that down, but i wonder if it will be revisited now. I'd make that trade in a heartbeat If I were the Reds. Thats an awful move by the Tribe, imo. I've always liked Westbrook though. Good looking sinker.

Red Sox trade for Coco Crisp
QUOTE(JDsDirtySox @ Jan 24, 2006 -> 09:17 AM) I understand one can argue the potential of Andy Marte... but you can't seriously think G. Mota is a better player than Coco Crisp?!? Can You? Plus if Lowell plays like he did two years ago, they don't have to worry about 3rd. I think people tend to forget how good Lowell has been. Sure he stunk it up last year, but I wouldn't be shocked to see him put things back together.

Indians acquire Jason Michaels for Arthur Rhodes
QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jan 24, 2006 -> 12:10 PM) Ha, ya, he was pretty solid last year but then I believe he left the team for a while due to family reasons(not exactly sure about the reason). He was pretty bad in 04 though irrc so we'll see how he does this year. I'll always remember his bling bling incident. But there was a time where he was one of the best, if not the best, lefty reliever in the game. If he duplicates last years numbers I can't fault Philly at all. They could use some help in the pen, especially when you consider they lost their best reliever (Wagner).

Cubs sign Wade Miller
QUOTE(Reddy @ Jan 23, 2006 -> 06:23 PM) i agree, if we made this move then people would be praising KW for the "low risk high reward" move that kenny loves to make. i like the move if i'm a cubs fan I concur. Miller has a good arm and this is a very low risk move.

Indians acquire Jason Michaels for Arthur Rhodes
QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jan 24, 2006 -> 12:07 PM) 2 something era last year in about 47 innings. Geeze, that was pretty solid. My brain must be a goner cause I pretty much forgot he was on the Tribe.

Why did Philly make this deal? Rhodes is overpaid and he's not effective (hell did he even pitch much for the Tribe last year?)

QUOTE(q\/\/3r+y @ Jan 23, 2006 -> 07:28 PM) Guess some don't realize the talent that is on this team. The bulls are easily one of the deepest teams in the league, and i also agree we need a superstar type player ( believe we have one in the making in deng). Actually i don't think he will ever be a super star but a type 20 player int he leaguye is not out of reach for a player of his caliber. If you guys do not feel they can win a championship by the 2008-2009 when do you? Five years... ten... twenty? This team has to play it's cards right like i said, otherwise we will continue to be a 6th-8th seed. I pretty much agree with you. I think Deng needs to develop (and he will; his shot has already improved greatly in one season), we have a strong bench, but we also need to find a legit center.

QUOTE(q\/\/3r+y @ Jan 23, 2006 -> 05:57 PM) The more years this team is together the better ( the core that is). Deng is gonna turn into a special player. You have to figure chandler will stop being the pussy that he is. Hinrich will be the point guard for another four five years. Nocioni could start on many teams is that is always a plus off the bench. This core is the same from last season and no one is gonna tell me eddy curry is/was and will ever be that vital of a piece to a team. The bulls clearly lost the desire to play tenacious defense like last season. I also really like the bench in songo slime... harrington... sweetney ( anyone of them starting here and there for us). Duhon is clearly a nice pg too contrary to what some may thing. I also have no clue who this 7'1 center who is drawing comparisions to shaw is. I know it's not aldridge or bargani... hell there isn't any one seven feet or taller going in the first round. I got to see a little bit of Aldridge today, but is he supposed to be the top pick this year? Anyone that follows him more (I really don't follow the big 12 much) tell us a little more about him? I'm assuming he'd be a hell of a pick for the Bulls, but maybe I'm wrong?

QUOTE(Rex Hudler @ Jan 23, 2006 -> 09:03 PM) The Indiana @ Iowa game is INDEED in HDTV Tuesday night. Let's hope the Hoosiers whip the damned Hawkeyes in the wonderful spectacle of High Definition!!! Ya, I'm pumped. We know crowd noise won't be a factor, but Iowa needs to protect home court big time. They got IU tomorrow and than OSU at home later in the week. Definately a tough stretch and it would be nice for them to start it off by beating Alford's former team.

QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Jan 23, 2006 -> 05:42 PM) Three seasons? The way I figure, for such an event to occur we'd need two good draft picks this season--perhaps to trade for a superstar caliber player. Then next season, hope either the Knicks or us absolutely tank and miraculously draw the first lottery pick. We'd have an opportunity to draft the athletic center (Odem, is it?) whose been drawing comparisons to Shaq. Eastern Conference is weak, but for us to suddenly pull together a championship team we'll need atleast ONE poor season. I think we'd need to find a really good big men to go with Tyson and than we can have Sweets off the bench. Than hope we can sign someone like Peja or trade for someone like Pierce.

Sox rated 11th best farm system by Sports Weekly
QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jan 23, 2006 -> 05:33 PM) Mostly cause he's not a guy with a high ceiling. I'm a big fan of his cause I like the way he plays but he's not going to crack many of these top 10 lists. Also, you got to take into account that he dominated a league in which he should have last year, so as good as he played he has work to do to impress others. He may with time. Getz is a pretty solid player all around the board. Doesn't wow you in any area, but his overall consistency along with some development (and more experience) should make him a solid prospect. I think he has the ability to crack the top 10 with a good year. Plus our system isn't strong.

QUOTE(IlliniKrush @ Jan 23, 2006 -> 12:15 PM) I don't think they'll blow them out, i'm mainly just messing with Jason. However, we will win that game. And yes, home court makes a HUGE difference. You probably will...but we gave you all quite the scare last year. I just love messing with ya guys cause if Iowa loses its expected, but if they win (and they have the ability to) than I get to rub it in

Benson for Julio and Maine
QUOTE(G&T @ Jan 21, 2006 -> 01:38 PM) This isn't a bad move for the Orioles. Benson isn't very good but it doesn't look like they gave up too much for him. On the other hand, the AL is going to eat him alive. At least they got a pitcher, even if it is a relatively crappy one (and possibly the most over-rated pitcher in the game). He's been living on his high draft status every since he came into the bigs.

Developer trying to move Marlins to Charlotte
QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Jan 21, 2006 -> 08:35 AM) The Knights are in Charlotte, SC. This is Charlotte, NC, being discussed as the potential new home for the Marlins. The Knights technically play in like Fort Mills which is right on the border and considered South Carolina, but its only like 10 minutes from downtown Charlotte (15 max).

Developer trying to move Marlins to Charlotte
QUOTE(rudylaw @ Jan 21, 2006 -> 08:20 AM) Does anyone have any idea how the Knights draw in Char. I know it is the minors but it could be a good indicator. Not very well, but on weekends they get decent crowds. IIRC from the times I've been there, they do rank in the bottom portion of IL league attendance. The stadium they have is kind of cool, but also pretty old (at least it seems old). Its over by where the Charlotte Hornets used to practice and by some amusement park (Great America or something).

Red Sox trade for Coco Crisp
QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jan 23, 2006 -> 08:15 AM) Brandon Phillips was in the same deal with Sizemore and Cliff Lee though, so they did turn out ok in that one. Ya, considering the Expos pretty much got nothing for Colon from the Sox/Yanks.

Dodgers, Blue Jays interested in B. Molina
QUOTE(robinventura23 @ Jan 23, 2006 -> 11:36 AM) Now comes word that he'll sit out the year if he doesn't get the money he wants... :headshake :headshake :headshake His agent is obviously a moron. He should have just took that deal with the Mets when they had the chance. On a sidenote, Molina >>>>>>> LoDuca and the Mets could have kept Gaby Hernandez. Freaking idiotic move that was.

QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jan 19, 2006 -> 10:56 AM) Is there something wrong with this guy that I have never heard about? You know, besides being slow and fat. I don't understand how he can still be a FA. I think he's really good. The catching market was thin this year. No teams really seemed interested. Hell, had Bmore waited they could have signed Hernandez for a few mill less per year. Bengie turned down a 3yr 15 deal from the Mets and its gonna cost him. He's a really clutch hitter and can shut down a running game. Don't know how well of a game he calls, but the Angels staff seemed to do good with him behind the plate (and Sciosc is a master at teaching guys how to catch and won't tolerate lousy catchers). The Angels made a big mistake not offering him arb so they could have kept him (cause Mathis isn't ready and Jose sucks). Dodgers make this move and it may just be the best move they made all off-season. The guys a real good player. In fact, as much as I love AJ, I'd rate Bengie just a notch above him (mainly due to his arm). Plus Bengie is the better offensive player of the two . AJ wins on sheer teammateness and how to call a game though(new word I invented).

QUOTE(aboz56 @ Jan 23, 2006 -> 09:49 AM) 5-2 against the rpi top 50. 10th toughest schedule to date doesn't hurt either. Plus the big 10 has the strongest RPI of all conferences which help. I don't know where Iowa went after the loss to your Spartans, but they were right outside the top 10 in RPI last week as well. Most of the big 10 conference is rated pretty high right now (via RPI).
