Twins expect Santana gone by 2008, per paper
ottawa_sox replied to beck72's topic in The Diamond Club
QUOTE(YASNY @ Jan 14, 2007 -> 11:58 AM) The Sox have complained about the cost of mediocrity. Santana does not apply to that statement. I can see the Sox signing Santana to a huge contract. This sentiment rings true for me. The biggest names, like ARod, get the attention of Kenny et al. It wouldn't surprise me if the Sox made serious overtures toward Johan. Sadly though, in the end, they will likely get outbid. The thought of him ending up with the Evil Empire makes me sick. At least I can say I've survived that nautious feeling many times before. -
QUOTE(whitesox1976 @ Jan 8, 2007 -> 12:57 AM) That is how I expect the line up to be, with the only question mark being Uribe. If Uribe don't play this year then I look for Cintron at SS. I think Sweeney will step up and take a lot of playing time from Anderson.

QUOTE(knightni @ Dec 11, 2006 -> 12:48 AM) Norm Cash, Steve Carlton, Jerry Koosman, Sparky Lyle, Steve Trout, Brian Downing, Jim Kaat, Rich Gossage, Ken Brett, Tommy John, Cleon Jones, Blue Moon Odom, Bucky Dent, Ozzie Osborn, Ken Boyer, Smoky Burgess, Dave DeBusschere, Eric Gagne... I remember listening to Brian Downing's first game in the majors. I think he was on third for the Sox. The first pitch thrown resulted in a pop fly near the third base dugout that he dove for, caught and injured himself to the extent that he was out for months. When he came back, he got his first major league hit .......... an inside the park home run. At least that is how my suspect memory replays his start.

I never though I would say this, but considering how Freddie's last several starts went ................... he could be the most valuable of the lot. 'Life' back in his arm, split finger ....................... it was no fluke.

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Nov 17, 2006 -> 09:42 AM) Well, I think they might be overpaying for a guy in his contract year, but we've seen this movie before when Kenny traded for Freddy. Frankly, I think Garcia is one of the better starters in the league, and I can't blame the Angels for wanting him. I'd imagine they'd try to extend him, and my guess is that they believe he'll be back in top form next year, something I believe, too, once he's had a full offseason since he's pitched so many innings in the last two years. Freddy's very undervalued, IMO, not just around the league but in his own city, too. I think the coolest thing the crowds at Comiskular did this year, though, was cheer his name in his last homestart against Seattle. (Needless to say, I'd love to have him back and deal one of the other four, and probably extend him, too. Ah, if only we lived in an ideal world.) Question: let's say the Sox deal Freddy for Santana. Anybody got a problem dealing, oh, Garland and Uribe for Young and a couple of pitching prospects? How about Cintron and Garland? Then we'd have a rotation that looks like, Buehrle Contreras Vazquez Santana McCarthy Frees up money and looks good to me. If we can land Santana, I think we should deal another pitcher. I agree with all of this. It was no fluke the way Garcia was pitching at the end of the year. The one thing I won't miss is Freddie making every baserunner look like Ricky Henderson. That drove me nuts.

I wish I had a better feel for what went wrong with Mark this year. And is it me or has he given up more hits per inning for the last several years in succession? If so, I am not sure where the optimism comes from that he will 'turn it around'. Blind perhaps?

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Sep 11, 2006 -> 10:12 PM) Any good posters in the gamethread tonight? I'd like to be party to inciteful comments considering I can only listen to the game tonight. But wading through these threads in search of such information is very difficult, given the level of depression. -

QUOTE(tealeafreaderii @ Sep 8, 2006 -> 08:49 PM) is it just me or does Scotty seem like he is playing with that "fire" he has been lacking the last few months. He looks like a completely different hitter. I think this bodes well for things to come. The first truly optimistic post of the game. 1 for 40. Perhaps this bodes well for things to come. -

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Sep 3, 2006 -> 05:22 PM) Is there not one person out there who's willing to defend Ozzie Guillen? Why? I've been hoping for the resurgence to begin with each game. So far ...... nothing. When is Ozzie going to perform a Venezuelan/Vulcan mindmeld with his slumping veterans? The pitching staff could be mistaken for the Orioles, given their mediocrity, for crying out loud. Can't Ozzie do something for these guys? Of course it should be noted that the Tigers and the Twins are also limping down the stretch. Therefore Leyland and Gardenhire should also be raked over the coals and summarily fired when the season ends for their recent performances when all is at stake. And concerning what Francona deserves ........ well let's not even go there. Some of the top records in baseball be damned .......let's have ourselves a regular American major league manager Wickerman party. Toss in these 4 jokers and have some fun. Torre is lucky his team is hot at the right time. Last year .... well just plain unforgivable. And how about the Red Sox debacle from 2 years ago. Up 3-0 and then total collapse.... criminies.

QUOTE(Wealz @ Aug 31, 2006 -> 05:15 PM) What did he do this time? He brought the Great Brandon McCarthy in . . . Vazquez gets pulled early ........ we go right to the vaunted Thornton and McCarthy and lose. Still it's Ozzie's fault. Ridiculous how our manager gets blamed every time.

The Ozzie Guillen Battleground Thread

QUOTE(Wealz @ Aug 27, 2006 -> 08:33 PM) Guillen's handling of Anderson, choosing which pitchers he faces, is a big reason why he has blossomed. Sure, it sucks to have Mackowiak in center at times, but that's the price you pay to make sure Anderson develops properly. You could blame Williams for not furnishing Guillen with a better alternative than Mackowiak in center. For what it's worth I am in your corner on this one. I find the Ozzie bashing shocking. I don't care who is managing. I don't care what decisions he makes. He will get fried on this site. And I don't mean to cast aspertions on Soxtalk. It is the nature of the internet media beast. It's just so easy to fall into substantive hindsight. Ozzie likes to play the odds, and yet he is also governed by his intuitions. He is able to confidently fly in the face of a computer readout whenever it suits him. I trust his intuitions. Leading a team to the world championship will do that. Some have suggested he sat on his ass while the starting pitchers did the work. This is incredibly disrespectful to the manager, who among other things, tries to get the most out of his players. I have been a passionate fan of the White Sox for 45 years. Senor Lopez was fantastic. I loved LaRussa's intelligence as well (it's not easy for me so say nice things about lawyers). But my favorite manager is Ozzie. Not only did he pull off what no one else could do, he did it with more style, panache and pure entertainment value than all of the rest of them put together. I have this sneaking feeling that he might not manage for all that long. To me he is the type of guy to throw his hands up in the air at some point and say 'oo the 'ell needs theese'. Whoever succeeds him will be a lot more boring. And as soon as his players don't have career years you can bet he too will be picked apart like fresh roadkill at a buzzard's lu'au. -

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Aug 26, 2006 -> 12:03 AM) Then where was McCarthy or MacDougal to face Hunter? Bringing in Riske is inexcuseable, as is bringing in Cotts. Cotts can't get ANYBODY out right now. It was the 6th. If Riske is no good and Cotts is no good, then our manager is at a distinct disadvantage. He still has the 3 innings to go and several more games in a 24 days in a row stretch. And 'our second closer' MacDougal gave up 3 hits in one inning. The fatal hit was came on the second pitch to the batter and got too much of the plate. Some call that 'giving in'. Whatever ... the location was not all that good. Cotts and Riske were asked to get an out and they didn't. This was not asking too much of them. It pains me to tip my hat to the Twins, but they deserve it. If Riske and/or Cotts get through the 6th, the Sox have their vaunted best 3 relievers to go 3, preserve the win and be ready the next day. If the Twins extend the game, we still have BMac for the potential long stretch of extra innings. Again ..... whatever Ozzie does, he will be vilified here if the Sox lose ..... regardless of the logic at the time. Imagine the hands being thrown up in the air if by the end Jenks was in there for 4 outs and did not close the deal in the 9th (see too many previous game posts to list). -

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Aug 25, 2006 -> 11:55 PM) Do you watch the games? Or are you one of those guys that just loves Ozzie since he sat on his ass and watched the pitchers win it all last year, while his Ozzieball crap had our offense in the bottom half of the AL. I don't get to watch as many as I'd like, but I listen to all of them. I don't have to watch them to understand that hindsight Ozzie bashing will occur. He had Vazquez on a short leash and the players that he brought in should have got the job done. That's what they get paid for. He didn't overtax anybody and they should be ready for near future games. Asking Cotts and Riske to retire a batter is not asking as much as Guerrier to go 3 innings and Crain 2. The Twins beat the Sox. Their players performed better in the clutch. for just once I would like to hear the players take the heat for their on field performances. Last year Ozzie kept pulling a rabbit out of the hat. I guess he was completely lucky and his true idiocy has finally got the better of him this year. Give me a break. 2 teams are trying to win these games. Their players pulled it out. -

QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 25, 2006 -> 11:39 PM) Lets see....in the biggest game of our season, we bring in Neal Cotts to face a very good lefty. Cotts can't get any lefties out right now. Predictably, two pitches later, there's a hit. Then, we bring in our 4th best righty out of the pen, and the guy is notorious for being terrible in clutch situations. One pitch later, and we're trailing. Then, with two guys on in the bottom of the inning, we let one of the worst starting players in baseball hit against a tough lefty. Predictably, he hits a weak grounder to 1B. Ozzie calls on 4 relievers over 3 1/3 innings and 3 of them give up runs. The Twins march out 5 relievers over 7 innings and give up 1 run. Their guys outhit and outperformed our guys in the clutch. But of course it's all on Ozzie. -
QUOTE(cgaudin @ Aug 25, 2006 -> 11:40 PM) We let too many opportunities slip away. I guess no one should second-guess Ozzie for leaving his starters in too long from here on out. That bullpen can't get anybody out. Don't worry. The one constant on this site is that if the Sox lose, it will be Ozzie's fault.
