Q traded to Cubs/Jimenez, Cease ++ to Sox
SkokieSox replied to Sleepy Harold's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (soxforlife05 @ Jul 16, 2017 -> 12:07 AM) How is it possible to overvalue a front of the rotation starter on the best non pre-arb deal in baseball? Left handed, no serious injury history, late bloomer/less mileage on the arm, good teammate? That is a priceless asset. Did Buehrle look dominant all the time throughout his career? Nope. LF is the easiest position to fill on the entire lineup. He doesn't play a premium position. If he's not a Stanton like player its a fail. FWIW Stanton was putting up 30-40 HR/yr seasons in A ball. He's also very far away from the majors. A ball teams don't even do scouting reports. I don't hate getting Jimenez but he's far from proven. Doesn't look like a dominant player to me yet. Needs to add some size and strength and then we can talk about 40 HR. Cease had TJS. You don't want pitchers with an injury history headlining these deals and he's another low minors guy to boot. We already have another TJS starter in Giolito but at least we got ML ready arm in Lopez and a good low minors arm in Dunning. I'd argue we got more for Eaton. Velocity isn't down from his TJS, in some respect it's a bonus that it's out of the way with little ill effects. Jimenez has a mature swing as well that appears natural, based on his previous manager's comments. Not sure you can just teach that. -
For those preferring CF, I wonder if the DP combo with Anderson is being discounted.

A one year doesn't really fit with a plan for team cohesion. Yeah, he'll play hard. You'd have to wonder how the team binds together under that scenario. It's easy to think of stats and how they translate objectively, but the truth of the matter is that the subjective aspect has a high impact to the overall performance of the group.

How can the White Sox possibly lose money?
SkokieSox replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 14, 2011 -> 04:23 PM) Where am I overestimating revenue? Forbes, sportsmarketingreport, Fan Cost index numbers, there's not really any debate about them. I might also be underestimating parking/souvenirs/concessions spending. I came up with pretty a conservative estimate. They have spring training costs, but they also derive spring training revenues. I'm pretty sure they have sweetheart deals with the airlines (when/if they ever fly commercial, such as Southwest) in return for advertising. There has to be a lot of trades engineered by the marketing/promotions department, where they're not booking revenue directly but the expenditures are dramatically lowered. Same thing with hotels for road trips. Last year, we were under the assumption (or the year before) they took losses because of the spring training complex construction and the Viciedo contract. I wonder if those two were figured into the Forbes calculations or not. And the majority of the secondary staff/support doesn't work 365 days per year, they're only working 81 home dates at the stadium. I seriously doubt they make money from ST, especially with a newly built stadium. Either way though, you've labeled high level fixed costs... If we had eyes on their entire budget sheet, I'm sure there are many overlooked items. And there's plenty of variable costs that change year to year. Costs continue to go up, especially in this poor economy, where vendors are trying offset their own losses or lost growth. Sure, deals are worked out, but they're certainly not getting anything for free, or even as good as a deal as you may think. You start factoring taxes, revenue sharing, insurance, advertising, stockholders... I'm not saying they don't make money, but you can't determine they are full of s*** with a paragraph of high level accounting. -
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Feb 27, 2011 -> 11:29 PM) Apparently Francona texted with Ozzie and spoke with Jenks and told both of them to put an end to it. I think Ozzie would rather end it as well, but I seriously doubt Francona has any control over what Ozzie does.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Feb 10, 2011 -> 03:08 PM) I guess that's where my mindset is different than yours. I see absolutely no necessity to kill the animal in the first place. The entire premise is unnecessary and irresponsible in my eyes. You are welcome to your opinion, and this may not change it by any means, but it is important to at the very least recognize the value hunting has. Although the act may seem cruel, if it is not done, especially in certain areas, deer and elk alike will starve to death. Just like with humans, resources become scarce... In over populated areas, they become very disruptive. Not only with eating farm crops but creating danger on road ways. You can argue they were in these areas first, but be that as it may, the result is not convenient to society when their numbers become out of whack. Again, you may not care for the act, but in many cases it is necessary. I, for one, have never been hunting, I love animals. But if they are utilized, and not wasted simply for sport, I am in favor of it.
-
QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Feb 10, 2011 -> 02:00 AM) Brilliant observation. Given that hunters only hunt because they're angry at the animals they're shooting at, I am also confused by this hypocritical stance of his. Are you being serious? Lol

QUOTE (joeynach @ Feb 5, 2011 -> 08:11 AM) I dont get it, they have a division that basically gurantees the Yanks and Red Sox playoff berths. They added about $30M in payroll this year and for what. What is so special about 2011 that warranted Vlad on a 1 year deal, DLee on a 1 year deal, Ducescher on 1 year deal, trade for Reynolds, trade for Hardy, and a 2 year deal for Kevin Gregg. Im not saying they didnt get better, but they did all this to go from 66 wins in 2010 to maybe 74 if things work out for them in 2011. Whats the point, yeah they will draw some more fans, but id rather just keep a low payroll and let my kids and young pitching staff develop and get major league time. The more you win, the better the development is for those kids. They need to be learning from good players, who know how to win.

Teahen will provide good rest for guys in a super utility role, but his value will come into play big time if in a injury occurs. Whether it be for a short or lengthy time period...
-
Sophomore slump last year, Gordo is going to come up big this year.
-
Reminds me of Carlos Lee, in that he was a third baseman, and moving to the outfield. Also the build and bat... Maybe next year, he can take LF, Mitchell in CF, and Rios in RF.

QUOTE (scenario @ Dec 18, 2010 -> 04:43 PM) The hard part about multi-year deals with relievers is that amount of time they pitch in a season results in year-to-year small samples. They don't pitch enough over the course of a season to overcome a bad stretch... which practically guarantees at least one crap year in a 3-year deal. And since the crap year is all that fans remember, practically every one of these deals look bad. But to get talented free agent relievers to sign on, the 3rd year is often a clincher. Fail to offer it and risk losing out. The only way to get above average talent for fewer years is if they are coming off a bad year or an injury. So, pick your poison. Which is a great point, as relief pitchers sometimes offer every other year good production. If it works out like that, you'd almost rather have a guy like Crain for 3 years versus 2.

Crawford to Boston, $142 Million, 7 Years
SkokieSox replied to Leonard Washington's topic in The Diamond Club
QUOTE (bighurt4life @ Dec 9, 2010 -> 08:55 AM) K Law did writeups on the Crawford signing and the Konerko signing. http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/blog?name=l...&id=5901522 http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/blog?name=l...&id=5899670 If you don't have insider I'll paraphrase for you. Boston made a great signing (Law gave it an A+) and Crawford will age very well and be worth every penny, Chicago overpaid and Konerko sucks. Boston has Crawford signed though his age 35 season, unless he turns out to have the body of Ricky Henderson he will start slowing down very soon and probably be worth only 15-20 steals the last couple years of his contract, combine that with marginal power for a corner OF and a bad walk rate/OBP and you have a 35yo LF with an OPS around 700-750 getting paid 20 million. I think that they are going to be seriously disappointed in this deal a few years down the road, it won't be as bad as Vernon Wells or Soriano but close. I don't understand this guy's logic, author not poster... How is PK a terrible first baseman? He picks everything! Now if you want to say his bat will come down some at 38, I wouldn't necessarily argue that. But to say he's a horrible first baseman? I don't get it... -
QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Dec 4, 2010 -> 04:57 PM) Are these guys similar to what we gave up for Peavy? Meaning, absolute garbage? If that's the case, then poor San Diego- having nothing to show for AGon or Peavy but Clayton Richard and his awful, awful splits. I know it's too early to tell, but what are the ceilings on some of these guys? Kelly is supposed to be their top prospect, and a top of the rotation starter

QUOTE (Paint it Black @ Nov 21, 2010 -> 05:15 PM) "How many pitchers have managed a combined 16 or more WARP over the last three seasons? The answer is 15, of which Danks has the 13th-highest total at 16.7 wins. A rank like that should qualify the White Sox left-hander as a legitimate ace, and yet does it really feel like he is thought of that way? Heck, he isn’t even the most popular lefty starter on his own team, even though his past three seasons have been much better than those of Mark Buehrle. Everyone knows Danks is good, but most miss just how good he has been in his short career" Straight from BP. I disagree, the team and fans value him just fine.
-
QUOTE (hometeamfan @ Nov 20, 2010 -> 04:35 PM) Great performances....underappreciated/valued How is he under appreciated or valued?
-
I love PK, but I think it's time to turn the page. You can't discount his leadership abilities, but I feel it's time for a new group to step up, and a new leader to emerge. Maybe even someone with a little more fire... Besides, I feel Guillen is still the ultimate leader for this team. Don't get me wrong, PK has been extremely valuable, and I appreciate all he's done. I just feel this is the time.

Yankees asked for permission to talk to Coop

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Nov 5, 2010 -> 10:21 AM) Or because the Marlins think he's a good manager. And the Marlins have shown to make pretty good baseball decisions, especially considering their resources... Or at least what they put out. -
QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 23, 2010 -> 05:14 AM) I'd hold onto Danks. If you have to trade a starter, try to get somebody to overpay for Buehrle. My one beef about Kenny is we never get ANYBODY to overpay in a trade IMO at least. Which is probably one of the reasons he's able to make as many deals as he does. I mean that in a positive way.

I would love for Hahn and Cora to stay with the White Sox. With that said, I like what it says about the organization if they move on, in that, we have great baseball people, and we don't stand in your way to better yourself. Not only do we need young talented players, we need our whole organization to be that way. It doesn't go unnoticed and I feel we will draw people. Buddy Bell is a good example imo. Although he's older, he's talented. I wouldn't mind interchanging some parts on all sides.

QUOTE (knightni @ Sep 27, 2010 -> 07:39 PM) Is Reinsdorf's group even interested, or are we talking Chinese ownership like the toll roads? The building is already 20 years old. It may have another 20 before people start b****ing about a new park. Wait wait, the Chinese were going to buy our toll roads?

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 12, 2010 -> 10:56 PM) FWIW, according to his AAP page, Sale is listed at 183. He lost a fair amount of mass early this summer though (5-10 lbs) in a bout of food poisoning. Ya but I heard he gained it right back in the form of a gold chain...
-
QUOTE (Real @ Sep 11, 2010 -> 09:37 AM) Gio. He hasn't exactly earned "bit in the ass" territory
-
QUOTE (knightni @ Aug 26, 2010 -> 11:41 PM) He only gets half... If that even ha!

Good point, Teahan probably fills that role
