  1. Who'd have thought that such a little guy could post a 1.450 OPS?
  2. Chew s*** Fun That's just....horrible.
  3. Some of those cubs fans actually seemed like intelligent baseball fans. They don't exist on the Northwest side of Chicago, unless we're talking about old timers.
  4. Okay, this is going right to the quote of the month thread.
  5. Cy Young with two votes within the last few minutes.... Name recognition will get you far in life.
  6. A world series title is a world series title, but it would be so much sweeter if we could take them out while we're at it.
  7. Unless the Sox meet up with them in the world series & wax those poor slobs.
  8. Have I told you lately how much I enjoy your amazing work with commas?
  9. "In 1974 the Boston Red Sox's pitching staff had 71 complete games. In 2003 the Houston Astros had one." That is insane.
  10. That's a kick ass signature, man. Did you put this one together? Nice.
  11. The jury is still out on Michael Haynes, but I agree that Marc Columbo was a questionable pick. The worst pick to date is easily the Rosey Williams pick, though. What a waste. As far as Harris, Tank, Vasher, Berrian, and others go, we'll just have to wait and see. I can't take a definitive stance on any of it. Do I like this guy, do I like that guy? On the strength of what? They have yet to even step onto an NFL field.
  12. Here's an excerpt from my "Fascinating Baseball Facts" book (1993 Edition). In 1968, Gibson of the St. Louis Cardinals notched 13 shutouts, the most by any hurler since 1916. He also registered a 1.12 ERA, which set a new low for the game after the dead-ball era. He led the league in fewest hits per game, strikeouts, opponents batting average, and opponents on base percentage. Gibson's overwhelming stats earned him both the Cy Young and the MVP awards. Alarmed by how far the balance scale had so obviously tilted in the favor of pitchers, baseball officials shaved the regulation height of pitchers' mounds and also squeezed the size of the strike zone prior to the 1969 season. I agree that it's either Bob's 1968 season, Pedro's 1.70 ERA season, or anyone of Sandy Koufax's seasons from 1963 through 1966. 1963: 25-5 with 20 CG, 11 Shutouts, 214 Hits Allowed in 311 IP, 306 Strikeouts, and an ERA of 1.88 (League Average: 3.02) 1964: 19-5 with 15 CG, 7 Shutouts, 154 Hits Allowed in 223 IP, 223 Strikeouts, and an ERA of 1.74 (League Average: 3.25) 1965: 26-8 with 27 CG and 8 Shutouts, 216 Hits Allowed in 336 IP, 382 Strikeouts, and an ERA of 2.04 (League Average: 3.26) 1966: 27-9 with 27 CG and 5 Shutouts, 241 Hits Allowed in 323 IP, 317 Strikeouts, with an ERA of 1.73 (League Average: 3.28) And then he retired. He never pitched another game after going 27-9 with a 1.73 ERA. Only 31 years old. :headshake
  13. Cy Young is a legend, but he's not even in the Top 50 of all time in winning percentage (.618). I would put these pitchers ahead of Cy: Christy Mathewson Bob Gibson Mordecai Brown Warren Spahn Randy Johnson
  14. The Pacers are phenomenal. They were my back-up plan, just in case the Pistons didn't make it. Once again, being a Bulls fan, I hopped on the Pacers bandwagon on the strength of Ron Artest (just like I did with the Pistons on the strength of Ben Wallace). Defense is what does it for me. If you play mean defense, you will have me on your bandwagon for certain. And of course, I like the Spurs and the Rockets. My buddy tried to tell me that they're west coast teams, so you can't root for them (as it's not what the NBA purist does!). But, Texas is not a west coast state in my book! They love their defense down there! And that's all that matters. Now, California on the other hand.... With the exception of baseball, that state ain't worth a DAMN when it comes to sports. No defense, you see? Although the Raiders are like an east coast team stuck out west. Poor Raiders. :headshake People out west are just....different. What can I say? Just like Wesley said in "White Men Can't Jump", they'd rather look pretty and lose, as opposed to looking ugly and winning. The Sacramento Kings philosophy. Not that this applies to EVERY individual out there, but sports is one hell of an indication as to what people in given regions are interested in. People out east love defense, plain and simple. What is Chicago known for? Defense. What is Detroit known for? Defense. New York? Defense. You don't have to watch Karate Kid Part 1 to recognize that it all starts with defense. Wax on, wax off.
  15. I'd say that a career .303 average with nearly 2500 hits would warrant a better description of his "stick". It's not just merely "decent". I'd be more inclined to say "excellent". And how many gold gloves did he win? Who was better? Keith Hernandez or Mark Grace? They belong in the "Not quite good enough for the hall of fame, but excellent players who will be remembered long after they're gone" bracket.
  16. I recommend Dennis Coffey's "Hair And Thangs" LP from 1971. I saw the original go for $240.00 on ebay recently, but you can get the repressed version at dustygroove for only $8.99! It's guitar jazz funk fusion for those that don't know! No vocals!
  17. That Pistons team from 15 years ago was perhaps the greatest collection of defenders that the league has ever seen, but they were, for the most part, a bunch of assholes. Now, this Pistons team? Ben Wallace and Tayshaun Prince are the types of guys that you'd like your daughter to bring home. I can't say the same for Bill Laimbeer, Dennis Rodman, Rick Mahorn, Isiah Thomas, etc.
  18. You couldn't pay me enough money to go to Detroit on the night that the Pistons win it all. That city is going to get torn apart.
  19. In retrospect, I should not have revived those old Frank Thomas threads. Sorry about that.
