The only one doing it with any success is Hawk. Chris Berman's can be funny, but are too long and/or hit or miss. I don't know what other announcers do, but from the few I've heard, they don't actively search out a good one, i.e. The Milkman, El Caballo, One Dog, etc. You are right, it is very sad.

Maybe, the White Sox trade Big Frank if Dye can pick it up? Maybe get a decent bench player and a playoff ready pitcher?

QUOTE(Steff @ Apr 18, 2005 -> 08:31 PM) To those around 30.. was losing HC that big of a deal to you guys..?? I ask this because if it wasn't.. then do you think it's appropriate to still blame that on lack of attention? Most season ticket holders I know are in the 28 to 40 range... Me personally, I don't care that he was fired. I don't think it was what Harry did to or for the Sox, it's what he did for the Cubs. I went to Cubs games in the early 80's and you were lucky to have 5000 people in the stands. (My mom wouldn't let us go to Comiskey alone, but my dad lived by Wrigley, so she felt I was safer there) After Harry got there, the gentrification of the neighborhood, AND the fact that Cubs players would go out to the local bars (Palmeiro and Grace come to mind...especially Grace) swung the love to the North Side. I still think the biggest mistake JR made was not putting a new stadium on or near the lake next to McCormick Place. Look at all the stadiums on or near water, right near downtown now. PNC, Pac Bell, Great American. JR would have been the first one to "revitalize" a team by proper stadium placement. Instead, it went to the Orioles. People wouldn't think that going to the ballpark would be "scary" or "too far." You would be a very quick bus or cab ride away from downtown, so you'd get a lot more after work fans. Don't get me wrong, I like the fact that the stadium is where it is...I just think more people would go if it looked out over the lake and city than the Dan Ryan and train tracks.

Every player goes through slumps. Whether it's at the beginning, middle, or end of the season. Let's see what plays out first before we end his career and say we are doomed. Like I said, 9 games into the season does not a season make.
-
I'm sorry, did I see the record right? Is that 6-3? We are only 9 games into the season people. We haven't even hit double digits yet and we are already switching batting order? Let the players get comfortable. If this is still going on by the end of May (first quarter of the season) THEN you can start worrying. We are in first.

7/8/1971 US: It's Too Late - Carole King UK: Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep - Middle of the Road. WTF? Wow. And I thought Alone was bad. Gotta check on the Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep song...check back later.

7 + 8 + 1971 = 1986 1 + 9 + 8 + 6 = 24 2 + 4 = 6 The Romantic. Thank you. I l:wub:

Hopefully a sign and trade. But if not, it will be a lowball deal. Best season is his contract year, can't rebound, possible heart issues, no defense although it's better, lack of focus at times. Thanks for the year Eddy, but you should become someone else's problem. PS. Get better.

your personal worst sports moment
CanOfCorn replied to LosMediasBlancas's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
Freshmen swimming. I go to the blocks. I'm swimming the 50 Butterfly. I'm focused. "Swim your race. Concentrate. Don't DQ." Then I hear the words... "Swimmer, take your marks." I look to each side of me and I'm the only one swimming this event. I was laughing the whole way. I could see my teammates cheering me on against...no one. I double touched, but I think they let it go because EVERYONE in the place was laughing. I did get some important points for the team though. AND...I WON!!!! -
Spring Training is to get in game shape. No pitcher throws everything he has, unless it's on the side. The Indians play in FL, Sox in AZ. Millwood is brand new to the Sox and you know how they do with that. Mariotti is doing what he's paid to do...as pathetic as it is...illicit a response. And I agree with Yas and Steff...a win's a win. I don't care if it's a fluke or luck or divine intervention or a good ol' fashioned ass-whoopin'. We are 2-0 and the Indians are 0-2. Period. End of story.

QUOTE(YASNY @ Apr 1, 2005 -> 08:49 AM) You have to remember that I am looking at things over a perspective of a "few" years more than most here are. In no particular order ...... Duke, UNC, UK, KU, UConn, MSU, Zona, Syracuse, OK State, Maryland. Just miss: Stanford, Illini, Louisville, Wake Forest, Gonzaga, Utah, Oklahoma. Can't argue with you on any of those. Especially the first 5. It seems like the next five and the Just misses are pretty much interchangeable. Any one can have a good year. Oh how I miss the days of Indiana State-DePaul final fours...
-
Yas...who would be your top ten. I'm guessing Duke, UNC, Kentucky, and Kansas...but who else? Connecticut? Wake? Zona? Michigan State? Just curious.

They can call her Dot. GoldenPalace Dot Com. $15,000 is child's play. There has to be a time limit on that. A year or something.
-
He's not a recruit...but don't forget Marcus Arnold, PF will be eligible next year too.
-
Don't forget that the entire bench, with Davis, was left handed batters. Timo, Willie and Ross. With Widger, you have a RH batter with some pop. Then you have your slasher with Ozuna. Now they have a balanced bench.

Sounds like a doctor needs to check that out!!!

QUOTE(EvilJester99 @ Mar 30, 2005 -> 05:44 PM) Hell I had something near to that happen to me recently, I created a new formula for a product we make and it saved the company a cool million and do you think I got anything out of it?? Hell no, not even a thank you or a lunch.... No, but you have some GREAT resume fodder for that next job!!!

QUOTE(Steff @ Mar 30, 2005 -> 05:38 PM) I totally agree with you guys that this is the way it is most of the time.. the situation here is this.. they are trying to sell off one of the divisions.. the sale is going to make 11 executives and 35+ agents millionaires x3... they need me to finish the project or they don't get the dilligence done. As well I am one of the "contacts" in the deal - not that I'll be cashing any million $$ checks :headshake I just know that if they were to fire me or lay me off at this point the deal would be set back by a year at the least and they are not about to let that happen. Greedy bastards.. Can you ask to get a piece of this deal? Or be an executive so you can?

QUOTE(Steff @ Mar 30, 2005 -> 05:13 PM) I think I'm just going to give him a heads up that there's some personal stuff going on (rather than going to the HR department who is pretty much a joke around here) that may cause me to miss some unexpected time and not mention resigning. I feel that's the best way to cover all my bases at this point. Thanks for the advice guys. That's the way to go, Steff. Keep the ball in your court. Because they may not assign you any more projects and when you finish the one's you are on, they may just let you go. The key is to keep the ball in your court. Good luck. PS. Just remember, if for some reason a company had to lay you off or fire you, you usually don't get much notice. There is no more loyalty in business. Saying that, do what YOU are comfortable with.

Kruk and Reynolds AL Central Preview from ESPN
CanOfCorn replied to maggsmaggs's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Sorry, but the "Twins have won it and we haven't" routine is getting old. So is the "Sox collapsed last three years." This isn't about history or pub. It's about talent on the field. The Indians haven't done jack in a while, but they are getting major pub. Don't forget, HR and Kruk are ex-players and Gammons writes for the Boston Globe. If they had a Telander or Morrissey on ESPN, they would talk about Chicago teams more. Kruk had one year here or a year and a half, I can't remember, not enough to really know the team. It doesn't matter what ESPN says, let's get out on that field and kick some Twinkie/Indian/Tiger/Royal Ass. -
Question for Illini fans
CanOfCorn replied to LosMediasBlancas's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
Illini...and not because it's March Madness (although it helps). As much as I love the Sox and I do and have since the late 70's...the connection to my alma mater is so much stronger. I lean forward in my seat for every game with the Illini. You can never NOT be an alumni. Bruce Douglas, Marcus Liberty, Kenny Battle, Eddie Johnson...always Illini, no matter who they play for in the pros or what they do in life. White Sox players, while I love most of them, sometimes they leave and have better careers elsewhere. Or are remembered for being on another team. Fisk comes to mind, most people, outside of White Sox fans, remember him as a Red Sox. I want to see both, but the Illini would mean more to me. -
QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Mar 29, 2005 -> 03:06 PM) I think if the ChiSox are again amongst the worst in MLB in team ERA they'll be looking to get out of AZ fast. You don't spend over 1/2 the team's payroll on arms, suck that bad, & then think AZ has nothing to do with it. I think it's JR's decision. I think he REALLY likes AZ. His best friend Jerry Colangelo lives there. I doubt they'll go back to Florida, not until Reinsdorf sells the team.
