  1. Did anyone see Moronotti's article today? Kinda puts it into perspective. Although the title is dripping with irony considering who wrote it: Egomaniacs Swallowing Sports World http://www.suntimes.com/output/mariotti/cst-spt-jay12.html
  2. MLB: White Sox NBA: None (although I do kinda like the orange Phoenix jerseys, they grew on me) NHL: 'Hawks NFL: Old School powder blue Chargers jerseys...awesome!!!
  3. It's a good thing it's not: Hitting with Joe Borchard Fielding with Carl Everett We'd have one school year's worth of crap-ass players.
  4. Per Roto: Orioles signed RHP James Baldwin to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training. There's no harm in signing him. Well, he could bean one of the Orioles' good young hitters in spring training. But then, he doesn't really throw hard enough to hurt anyone and the Orioles don't actually have any good young hitters. So, no harm. It's good to see the lost Baldwin brother working again. Keep on keepin' on, James.
  5. QUOTE(Soxbadger @ Jan 11, 2005 -> 07:33 PM) Its lame that the announcers get so after Randy. I mean faux mooning, most 7 year olds have seen way worse things in the Austin Power's marathon that they probably catch on TBS. And a fan shooting some one? Why would you blame the player? Its the "pyscho" fans fault, and notice how the phrase pyscho means that they are unstable to begin with. No rational human would shoot some one, over being mooned as a fan. And as a player I would have no fear of a fan running onto the football field. I have pads, they have most likely nothing. As soon as their foot touches the field, you can say "I was afraid they were going to attack me" as soon as your fear is reasonable, you can defend yourself. I doubt many fans are going to be getting into fights with 200-300 lb football players. I think it was one of the funnier things Ive seen a football player do. SB Remember Monica Seles? Getting knifed in the back? But she doesn't wear pads, you say... That's why it's dangerous. There are some pretty unstable people out there. Stalkers break into star's houses. if it's a streaker running on the field, yeah, lay him out...but you never know what a drunk or someone who might even be on drugs would do. s***, how about the two looneys that attacked Gamboa and the ump? And that was over nothing. After the Pacers-Pistons brawl, I'm afraid this is escalating. You want to celebrate, great, celebrate. You want to piss off fans, do it in the confines of the game. Nobody "has it coming," but you tell that to a fan that starts to drink at 8 am at a tailgate and continues at a game. It's hard to reason with someone who is drunk.
  6. QUOTE(Punch and Judy Garland @ Jan 11, 2005 -> 10:44 PM) It's low risk-high reward. More like low risk-moderate reward. His back hasn't been right in years. He'll still pop 20 homers and probably have around 65 rbi's, but he'll probably be healthy for only 100 games. But $1.65mil isn't a bad investment.
  7. Good...he produced some fine lineman while he was there...Pashos, Preston, Butkus, the kid on the Giants now. I forgot his name. Should be a good hire.
  8. QUOTE(YASNY @ Jan 11, 2005 -> 04:24 PM) One of these days, some psycho fan is gonna shoot one of these jerks on the spot. I can't believe they can't foresee this possibility. Exactly. I'm sick of the woe is me attitudes of today's players/celebs. When rookie and minimum contracts are in excess of $300,000, and the average joe is earning $30,000, how are we supposed to even try to relate to these guys. Respect is earned, not given like a paycheck.
  9. WOW!!! 2 yrs/$5.2 mil. I think Ricciardi needs to re-read Moneyball.
  10. Premeditation isn't the only thing that should be measured here. TO and the Sharpie was premeditated, but was celebratory. Also, Joe Horn and the cell phone. Classless, maybe, but all pro sports are hanging on an edge, some more than others. And for one of your so called, stars is pretending to moon the fans at a hostile stadium, LIVE ON CAMERA, then rubbing your ass on the Packers name, that's just not smart. Eventually, there will be a backlash from all of this...someone will go too far and fans will stop going to games. Not all fans, but enough to hurt the leagues. If the fans moon the team bus, then moon them back from the bus. Personally, I liked that he was pointing at the scoreboard when the packer fans were on him. That's the best way to get back at any opposing fan (if you're winning).
  11. Pbthtbthbththtbhth. No thanks. We don't need a power hitting, no walking 2B. We need a contact hitting, base stealing, bunting second baseman.
  12. I've seen Chris Burke play at AA Round Rock and this kid is going to be damn good. i don't know if he will have the power numbers Biggio has, but he is in theh Biggio mold. Scrappy, quick, above average 2B. Backe has some pretty good numbers and a decent upside. Soriano is not what the Astros need.
  13. QUOTE(elrockinMT @ Jan 10, 2005 -> 11:27 PM) I too did not like the Carlos Lee trade. Hinton doesn't make me feel any better about it. I keep thinking of the big trades made in past years that just didn't pan out: Ritchie, Colon, Koch... But, what is done is done and the points made that we wouldn't have some free agent signings are probably correct. You just have to play the waiting game. I just want the season to start and am willing to settle for Spring Training to start. Actually it's Prince Fielder and the Brewer's have a lot of time spent on him. Overbay will be traded within the next 2-3 years.
  14. Is there a max time that they PTBNL needs to be done? Could it be based on Carlos' production in 2005? Tier 1 = Carlos .315 35+ homers 120+RBIs Tier 2 = Carlos .280 25+ homers 100+ RBIs Tier 3 = Carlos .260 20+ homers 80+ RBIs Or something like that.
  15. QUOTE(SAVVY18 @ Jan 7, 2005 -> 08:19 PM) I believe it was in '83, but maybe '84. We were sitting in the lower deck in Left Field. Luzinski crushed a Roof shot. Next up Kittle crushed another Roof shot. Followed by the Wimperoo, Tom Paciorek hitting a normal homer to left. Not often you get to see Back to Back to Back, let alone Back to Back roof shots. Another time that same year we were sitting in the same area when a homerun went just over my head and into the lap of the lady sitting behind me. Not caring, about 6 guys just reach into her lap, grabbing for the ball. And anything else they could grab. SOX PLAYERS TO HIT ROOF SHOTS: Eddie Robinson 4/25/51 v. Al Widmar Minnie Minoso, 9/21/60 v. Bud Daley Dave Nicholson, 5/6/64 v. Moe Drabowsky Buddy Bradford 4/25/69 v. Tom Hall Tom Egan 7/25/71 v. Jackie Brown Dick Allen 5/1/73 v. Mike Cueller Richie Zisk 6/4/77 v. Don Gullett Greg Luzinski 6/26/83 v. Brian Oelkers " " 8/1/83 v. Ray Fontenot " " 8/28/83 v. Dennis Boyd Ron Kittle 9/6/83 v. Chris Codiroli " " 9/19/83 v. Mike Walters " " 4/29/84 v. Al Nipper " " 7/2/84 v. Dove Rozema Greg Luzinski 7/3/84 v. Jack Morris Ron Kittle 8/1/84 v. Bob Ojeda Carlton Fisk 8/1/84 v. Bob Ojeda " " 5/30/85 v. Charlie Liebrandt Ron Kittle 8/8/85 v. Bob Ojeda (again!) Harold Baines 8/23/85 v. Tom Filer Dan Pasqua 5/30/89 v. Frank Tanana Ron Kittle 4/17/90 v. Rob Murphy I think it was Kittle and Fisk. That was the only game with back to back WS roof shots... but paciorek didn't hit one that day. http://baseball-almanac.com/box-scores/box...id=198408010CHA I think I was at that game too...but, my memory doesn't serve me well in this case.
  16. Yas, I hate to do this to you, but it's only January...every team is a question mark now. Anything can happen during the year. people get hurt, don't live up to their billing. There is no chemistry. whatever. Kenny said he wanted to balance the offense and he did. Kenny said he wanted to bolster the pitching staff and he did. Kenny gets an A. I don't think we can grade the players until they've played. But the moves the White Sox have made have made this team more dangerous from top to bottom. We have big boppers, we have speedsters, LH, RH, no below average pitchers. It's a near perfect balance of Go Go Sox and the South Side Hit Men, which is all Kenny and Ozzie wanted.
  17. How many mid season acquistions actually help the team get into the playoffs? The only one I can think of off the top of my head was Sutcliffe for the cubs in 1984. Beltran had a mediocre end of the season last year, but was lights out in the playoffs. Everett and alomar were good pickups, but it didn't help. I agree, if you can improve the team now, do it now. You also might get someone cheaper and for less prospects now than at the deadline when everyone KNOWS what you need.
  18. QUOTE(babybearhater @ Jan 7, 2005 -> 05:55 PM) this message is from the twins board: I think this finally takes a little sting out of the Garcia trade for the Southside Cry Babies. They now have a legitimate catcher, which they lost last year. Hopefully all the negativity down there will bring out the worst in AJ's play. That being said, AJ is a difficult guy to root against. I thought he was a really good player with the Twins, and as Jan noted, those 10-plus pitch at bats were great to watch on a first pitch swinging team. AJ's antics, and how much he got into his opponents kitchen was worth some wins against those babies, and I don't like the history of former Twins playing against us. I much prefer them in the NL. Cripes, even Mark Redman has dominated us. Koskie stays and this is a non-issue, but I think the b****Sox just got better. It will take a healthy year from Mauer, and production from the 3-5 in the rotation to keep pace. So angry for the three time defending AL Central champs. But I completely agree with what he is saying. Speaking of b****ing, anyone heard from Anthrax after this signing?
  19. My favorite moments were in 1984. What makes them so memorable is that I saw 4 roofshots that year. Fisk and Kittle on the same day, Ruppert Jones (first lefty to hit it over the RF roof) and Mark McGwire. McGwire, you ask? Yep, they were on a barnstorming tour as members of Team USA and he crushed a ball right past the light tower. i remember that day because everyone was oooing and aahing about this college kid crushing a ball. The stadium was just filling up for the game that night and it was amazing. Also, I was there when Mike Cameron hit 4 homers for the Mariners...go Jon Rauch!!! Also, even though I wasn't there, Julio "Juice" Cruz crossing home in 1983, Bo Jackson, any Ventura grand slam, elephant ears, churros, Andy the Clown, fights with Brewer fans and the two years when every game i went to the White Sox won.
  20. to Kenny! Carlos Lee to the Brewer's ain't such a bad trade now, is it? Let's get that utility IF and invite a couple of pitchers to ST and away we go. Have pitchers and catchers reported yet? Have pitchers and catchers reported yet? Have pitchers and catchers reported yet? Have pitchers and catchers reported yet? Have pitchers and catchers reported yet? Have pitchers and catchers reported yet? Have pitchers and catchers reported yet? Have pitchers and catchers reported yet?
  21. QUOTE(Man Of Steel @ Jan 6, 2005 -> 09:27 PM) I dont blame the guy... One time I ordered a big mac and when I got home it only had ONE ALL BEEF PATTY instead of two... it was bread, bread, meat, bread and I was very annoyed.. Another time when me, my dad, and brother were driving to Minnesota there was bad snow on the roads and we went through McDonalds for breakfast and my brother ordered a sausage biscuit.. we got back on the road and when he opened the sandwhich it was just a biscuit and they didnt add sausage... and the roads were too bad to go back so he was screwed.. another THING.. fast food places NEVER get the f***in order right.. I go to Wendys and order a Spicey Chicken Sandwhich nothing on it but lettuce.. well I get it and when I get home its a Spicey Chicken sandwhich with nothing but tomato and mayonaise... I HATE TOMATO AND MAYONAISE!!!!! They f*** you at the drivethru...
  22. QUOTE(Texsox @ Jan 6, 2005 -> 07:57 PM) He is one f***ed up human. It is sad how many people confuse celebrity and fame with good and innocent :headshake I certainly don't support his pedophile tendencies, but I will say he has given a lot to charity over the years. when it comes to things outside sex, he's a pretty decent human being. He needs some serious help. very very serious help.
  23. QUOTE(DonkeyKongerko @ Jan 6, 2005 -> 08:03 PM) Sounds about right. About the only thing that Cubs outfield would be is about ten times more expensive.
