Sox in Discussions for Moncada Extension per Y2Jimmy

You are a wonderful poster and insider and I hate to disagree with you. But it seems obvious to me that the spending to upgrade player development, scouting, etc. should have been done at the beginning of the rebuild when we were trotting out minimum payrolls. Why wait till you are coming out of the rebuild to do it ? You max out the payroll at $110 then JR says . STOP ! Then the fanbase gets so pumped about all the good players we signed, the extensions , the forays into modern techniques and IFA that they all fall in line to praise the FO . Am I supposed to be impressed the Sox are finally doing what even teams with lower payrolls have done to maximize talent evaluation. Doing all these good things now just seems like veiled reasons to hold down the payroll by saying look we want to keep the band together , we want to modernize, we want to become more active in IFA thats why we have to keep payroll where it is . Well why the hell wasn't all this done 10 years ago. I'll tell you why . It has always appeared in order to run the Sox at a profit Reinsdorf can't spend in every single area that needs money put into it to be good at it. Player development, scouting IFA , modernizing all took a back seat while the Sox were having higher payrolls and trying to win. They can't be profitable pouring money into all areas like successful organizations. The Twins have run a very successful IFA part of their organization supplementing the roster with good talent , Even they have a payroll right around $130M now. The freaking Twins run circles around the Sox FO. The Twins might as well be a Canadian team. The City that Works, The City of Broad Shoulders White Sox is still the least successful franchise in MLB history when it comes to winning and as usual there is one foot on the gas with the other foot on the brake. -

Yea it's not like Reinsdorf ever pushed all the chips in . They are like TB in one respect . They are very conscious of the bottom line. This is supposed to be the beginning of the push to compete and looks like they cut off payroll at where ever its at right now. $110 ? The Rays made the playoffs starting the season with a payroll of $69M , Was the Sox payroll ever that low during the rebuild and yet when we want to supposedly compete it's still in the bottom half of MLB . Sure you can point to all the acquisitions and extensions as positive signs but they aren't . They had to come out of the rebuild .Why can't they spend more than $110M this year ? I 've said in the past that next year is really the year to win but with a few breakouts by Cease, Kopech and/or Lopez the Sox could make a run at the division. But of course there will be money to spend at the trade deadline if and only if we are actually in a position to do so. Of course we might be in a better position if they actually decided to try to be more than the Tampa Bay Rays of mid market teams. Or maybe that's the Twins or Indians or Royals who make the most of a mid market payroll by actually making the playoffs in consecutive years once in a while. -
I wonder if Gennett's medicals are keeping him from signing with anyone. At this point a minor league deal wouldn't be a terrible idea .

More Minor League Additions

I wonder how many times Sadzeck has been called Sad-sack. Hopefully not many . That's pretty outdated. Robinson played LF for Felix Hernandez perfect game way back in 2012. -
Oh let us have our fun. He basically went toe to toe with Robert hitting across 2 different levels. The difference is Yermie just turned 27 and could already be at his peak while Robert is 22 and his peak is possibly down the road .Mercedes probably didn't leg out many hits either. Robert is talked about as a future Trout and Mercedes as beer gutted softball player. Sometimes those softball players can draw oooo's and aaaaahhhh's too.

That's likely why they keep him around unless they get a better than expected offer for him. He's the depth at DH. I like him a lot just because no one wants to rank an old guy (for a prospect) who can't play D but who just continually smokes the ball. I also want to root for more than just the high draft picks and $50M bonus guys. I'm a sucker for a good underdog story. I'm under no delusions about him ever getting any significant PT on the Sox but I can imagine him being a David Ortiz or Edgar Martinez type who didn't get much of a chance until later because of injuries or not being the type of player management puts much faith into.

When I saw the Not Steve Cishek post about it I was thinking well we will see a James Fox post soon about it. I was thinking for a while James was Cisheks source but now i think they have the same source and NOT SC just gets the info 1st.. That's exactly how it went with the Robert extension . Not Steve followed by James. -
Yerminator looked good today with a BOMB and a single and even caught without the world ending.

I always figure picking the guy who might be at risk to lose his starting job first is the one I'd like to break out so that would be Lopez. There's no way to know who's capable of being very good but Lopez has at least proven he is durable so far. He is the least likely to break out or most likely to be mediocre to bad so I'll bank on Kopech and Cease getting better and Giolito remaining good .

We used to be able to say we had an intelligent fan base. Maybe we still do but we sure have our share of people who change fan to fanatical and make it a bad thing.

Subscribe to mlb.tv for the White Sox only . It's around $94 for the whole season and includes spring training games and hope the Dodgers won't black it out in spring training which they probably do since we are both in LA area. Which is what I just did . If blacked out you can also pay for a good VPN to block the black out or try your luck on a free one. Maybe someone here can recommend a good free one with a shitload of ads or third party involvement. Or if you have a MLB.TV subscription and it is blacked out you can watch it as an archived game 90 minutes after it's conclusion. -
Yea the 1919 White Sox has always been a thorn but anyone who usually brings it up probably knows very little about it and that's no knock on them. It was 100 years ago and the courts and police work and baseball has changed so much as has reporting . It's probably impossible to know what was in the players heads or how threatened or underpaid they felt. Jackson was illiterate and perhaps got taken advantage into signing a confession he did not understand. Of course the court acquitted them all but new Commish Landis laid down the law since the Sox were the only team punished for what could 've been widespread game fixing. Too much remains a mystery and it's always been a matter of who you believe at least in Jackson's case. There are some people still out there fighting for him but as time marches on it probably won't matter. He will probably remain banned. Jackson's stats in the 1919 World Series are actually better than his stats from the 1917 World Series that the White Sox won. His last season played was actually 1920, his age 32 season, so he played a full season after the infamous World Series . He batted .386 in 649 PA, .444 OBP 1.033 OPS 172 OPS+. He also set career highs in HR and Total Bases that year. He struck out 14 times and never struck out more than 42 times in a season which he did in the year he hit. 408. https://sabr.org/research/black-sox-scandal-bill-lamb

If you look in the spring training thread Not Steve Cishek is saying a Moncada extension is coming soon. -
FS: Dane Dunning throwing without issue
CaliSoxFanViaSWside replied to Rankin's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Since you read the article you can see at one point he was #66 in MLB pipeline rankings. Probably have to assume around 10 pitchers ahead of him so yea at one point he was probably like the 10th best pitching prospect in all of baseball. Edit :Ok just to be more accurate I looked at MLB pipeline rankings for 2018 and saw Dunning at #59 and counted 22 pitchers ahead of him including Kopech and Cease and some other familiar high ranking MiLB and now MLB pitchers. You're welcome whoever emojied me thanks. -
Sox @ Reds: Spring Training Opener (Cease)

That interview is on whitesox.com if you look up the game and click on video. Said it was a mechanical change he made the last month of the season. Didn't hear the quote about top velocity. -

Aaron Bummer extended 5 years/16M (plus two options)
CaliSoxFanViaSWside replied to Kyyle23's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Yea me too I laugh that you can describe a whole nation like one entity. The Bummer move is good and so would be signing another 3WAR worth of players for less than $5M . Both are good value plays. -

CaliSoxFanViaSWside replied to Kyyle23's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Pretty soon the best relievers will get $15M a yr. if one hasn't already. Maybe so but every time they lock someone up and they remain good it makes them so much more valuable than just the contract value. They've also had very good luck with the players they have locked up so far so they're working from a surplus. Sooner or later one will go bad but thats not nearly as crippling as a $300M contract going bad. $29M is less than 1 yr of Mookie Betts next contract. -
Not true we signed another Tatis later didn't we ? And Andrew Romine.
-
Well crap . I really wanted Puig.

Actually they kinda both flew through AA together also. Tough hitters park and also no AAA juicy ball either. Mercedes 147 AB .327 BA .389 OBP .487 Slg. .886 OPS Robert 226 AB .314 BA ,362 OBP .518 Slg. .880 OPS

SInce someone got a kick out of my hot take and the article about Yermin came out a few days later , I now have support of my hot take in writing from that article. Of course I knew their number were pretty similar in AAA before I said that . Let’s start with what Mercedes did last season when he was promoted to Triple-A Charlotte and compare him with one of his Knights teammates, the guy who will likely be the big league team's Opening Day center fielder: — Mercedes: .310/.386/.647 in 53 games — Luis Robert: .297/.341/.634 in 47 games
