He's the guy who keeps making threads every year about how bad Abreu is. Them Abreu get's hot and makes him look foolish every time. It's a running joke now around here that he should make more threads saying how poor players are just because it's now regarded as good luck for Ron to post bad things about Abreu.

Ok trying clicking on that word quote on the post you are responding to then we can all follow your meaning better.

I have no idea what your 1st paragraph is talking about. If you are talking about Brice Turang he isn't even in our system. He's 19 and in A ball with the Brewers system.

5/26- Sox at Twins, 1:10, NBCSC

Going with the ultra bad lack of depth lineup without McCann, Anderson and Garcia. They are 3 of our top 6 position player in fWAR with Anderson 1st and McCann 3rd. Looks like another 5+ run loss. -
Dallas Keuchel signs one year deal with Braves

Don't forget Jonathon Schoop , non tendered and signed for 1 year by the Twins for $7.5M You won't get a high OBP from him but he has been worth 1.3 bWAR this year with 10 HR's . Last year the Twins tried Free agency with mostly pitchers and it backfired, This year they went after more position players Besides Schoop it was Nelson Cruz, Marwin Gonzalez, and also picked up CJ Cron off waivers from Tampa Bay. One of their best pitchers was a Free Agent Martin Perez. One of their best relievers is Blake Parker who they also signed as a FA. Make no doubt the Twins hit a HR this year and that is ultra rare hitting on so many low cost guys. But it isn't so rare to get 1 or 2 that can contribute. The Twins spent less than $50M for all those FA's and waivers on an under 30 yrs old 30 HR guy in CJ Cron and gave him $4.8M for a year. . By the way his father Chris managed in the White Sox minor leagues so you could have thought he should've been on the Sox radar. -
Dallas Keuchel signs one year deal with Braves

But that isn't his plan because that was before the rebuild and the payroll was higher than then now. His plan if to definitely go after high end guys but either supplement it with less expensive types or reinforce weak positions only if needed. For example you let Alonso not get the AB's necessary to vest his option and go after Rendon. If Rendon falls through maybe you go after Moustakas if he is available to either play 1st base or third and even some second base like the Brewers are using him. Or you can go after both. He has actually played more games at 2nd base than 3rd base this year and has done enough there for his WAR not to suffer He's already been worth 1.6 bWAR this year and was a relatively cheap option for 2 years in a row. He should be a 2.5 WAR guy who is a run producer; Look at someone like Yolmer Sanchez who was a 3.5 and 2,5 bWar guy for 2 years in a row coming into this year but much of it was fielding, Once he stopped hitting he became a 0 WAR guy . You pretty much always know what you are going to get from Moustakas. Inexpensive guys who play multiple positions who can hit 30 HR's while not batting below .250 are always decent pickups. You cannot have stars at every position. Right now Moustaskas is Jose Abreu with the bat but with twice the bWAR because he plays 3rd and 2nd equally well and if that's the case he can also play 1st. He's also around 1.5 years younger than Abreu. -
He probably isn't and Hahn doesn't have to make any decision on them regarding 1st base and Abreu. It really should be the last position on the team that requires much planning. There are always large human baseball players around to man that position.
-
It would be negligent not to explore a trade of Abreu, It doesn't matter if we like him or not. He is going to be a free agent and you trade those players every time. If you want him back resign him. But please go after a starting pitcher and Rendon before anyone else. The rest can wait. 1st base can wait not only do we have plenty of 1st base candidates but we might be adding another one in the draft with our 1st round pick. ( I really hope we don't).

That is always a concern, but the last few years it really hasn't been that hard to identify some decent 2nd tier guys. Just look for guys that have a track record of production in the AL who aren't all that old , who play solid defense have some power and on base abilities. I thought Avi and Schoop were the most talented guys among the non tendered guys. I thought Brantley would've been a really good pick up this year. You can see my comments on him in the recently bumped thread about the Colome trade. I thought McCann was the right choice among the catchers to pick up just because he was the youngest and offered the most unrealized potential when the rest of the catchers were just old guys. Also comments on him in that Colome thread and earlier than that in some spring training threads though I have no idea which ones. I liked Moustakas and JD Martinez not necessarily to keep for a long time but they seemed to offer the most upside while having very few teams going after them and could have been flipped.. Moustakas came cheap 2 years in a row although 2 years ago i believe he had a draft choice attached to him. I also like left handed hitters a lot more than righties. I think you also have to take some chances on injured guys like the Sox did with Jermaine Dye and Houston did with Brantley. I don't think I'm as good with picking pitchers but I do like Bumgarner . I'm also of the group that the Sox should kick the tires on Keuchel who at this point should be considering as a Tier B guy because after the draft I'm thinking it won't take more than 2 years and whoever gets him may offer 3 and while the Sox might have to outbid some contenders i don't think he'll be more than 30M . If he is I'd pass on him. Ideally for the rest of 2019 and 2020 at somewhere under $30M.And yes I'd love Rendon, -
Sox acquire Alex Colome For Narvaez
CaliSoxFanViaSWside replied to ChiSoxFanMike's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Well if you want to believe less than a half season of framing stats that's up to you. I know it's difficult to keep track of everyone's position on framing but mine always was that if you are to believe in framing stats then more time is needed. And my main arguments have always been that pitchers and umpires have just as much to do with those stats and also there seems to be a lot of variance on framing stats from year to year . -

Are you unhappy with McCann or Colome ? Or did u just bump an entire thread for a particular reason ? Don't get me wrong I like threads getting bumped because it makes me look pretty smart. Hahn if you are out there you can consult with me and I'll keep it a secret. just give me a salary and I'll sign a clause to keep my mouth shut forever. I expect you to do your due diligence on my 10 year history of posts that should back me up. -

Hey I know I've been at odds with you but I think you serve a purpose. Maybe what you say is too often repeated but it's ironic that people will get on you to stop whining in the same thread where people whine about Renteria which they do as often as you bring up Hahn. Frankly what Hahn?Reinsdorf do hurts the team a lot more than anything Renteria does. Maybe he's just trying to get guys good at it so when they do have to do it, they can do it. Maybe he believes truly that it's a character building thing and that's its not all about increasing your odds of winning in a rebuild. -

That's nothing new. There's always somebody who wants nothing to do with just about everybody. Some are proven right some wrong. I think over the last few years I have a pretty good record on guys I would have wanted as free agents panning out when many others said the same stuff as you. They need a lefty, he's still relatively young and knows a thing or 2 about pitching and especially pitching in the post season. It's not like there are going to be a whole hell of a lot of pitchers available. He's very similar to the Cubs Lester in a lot of different categories including the amount of postseason innings pitched before entering his free agent year. He's a long shot of course but I see nothing wrong with going after a proven guy who instantly becomes your 2nd best pitcher if you believe the Giolito we see now is here to stay. Why middle tier ? Who middle tier ? Wouldn't you prefer a guy with the most upside ? -

Was just watching the morning show MLB Central on the MLB Network and they talked a while about the game last night. John Smoltz talked about Giolito and basically said everything we already know about how he changed his delivery. He also brought up the concern which PTATC had brought up that shortening the delivery places more stress on the shoulder. Mark DeRosa talked about Eloy and comped him with Albert Belle as a big man who went into somewhat of crouched stance and did a side by side video comparison. I have to admit their swings looked pretty similar. So just out of curiosity I looked at Belle's early years with the Indians. He came up as a 22 year old and basically sucked for 218 AB's At 23 he was back in the minors with a brief stint with the Tribe. At 24 he had a very good season. 25 through age 31 . 7 seasons. 6 of those he got MVP votes and was a 5 time All -Star Eloy is 22. -
How many wins do you expect out of this road trip?
CaliSoxFanViaSWside replied to vilehoopster's topic in Pale Hose Talk
LOL yea if I was truly a bastard and had nothing better to do I could make a few different folders based on many different areas like who to sign as a FA,who to trade for, which prospects will flop, who we should draft and make a lot of people look foolish. However we all look foolish over and over if you spend enough years on this board. It's just some do it in a very short period of time. You could also do it on how right many people are. Sometimes I do bump old threads just for curiosity . The Samardzija threads when the Sox traded for him were all pretty positive with many also thinking the Sox could resign him before free agency. I'm also curios to see what everyone thought about Frankie Montas but I won't be bumping any threads any time soon. You could fill a book on how many hated signing McCann or gave up on Giolito and Moncada. -

CaliSoxFanViaSWside replied to Greg Hibbard's topic in 2019 Season in Review
Exactly but I wouldn't expect anything great from that rotation. Keuchel would just be insurance for the young arms for next year. Then in the off season you could add Bumgarner too. Remember Cease, Giolito Kopech and Dunning all have had Tommy John surgery. I understand people thinking we can win the division but it's a long shot. Eloy would have to get hot, Moncada, Anderson , ABreu, McCann all still have plenty to prove and 2nd halves can be just as bad as some of the good 1st halves. If by some miracle the Sox actually made the playoffs Cease wouldn't pitch in the playoffs ,they would shut him downdue to having reached an innings pitched limit much like the Nats did one year with STrasburg. These last 2 games were great and all but let's not forget the Astro's were missing Springer and Altuve 2 of the best players in the AL. -
How is it different ? You could make a very long list of good hitters who failed somewhere along the line(ar) growth path. Everyone of these guys have the talent ., it's making that talent work that's the difference. Giolito just did what many others with the same stuff fail to do. It's a very fine line between success and failure or what turns failed starters into successful relievers. Why does a late round pick like Buerhle succeed when 1st round picks fail ? Pitching is never all about stuff. It's knowing what to do with it and finding a way to do it consistently.

I wouldn't sign him with the idea of winning anything. I mean it could be an added bonus but I wouldn't count on it. The Sox are going to need veteran pitching help in Cease and Kopech's rookie seasons and Keuchel just might be the best pitcher out there who could come relatively cheap for a year and a half. Offer 2019, 2020 and an option for 2021 with a decent buyout for him.If someone wants to give him guaranteed money for 2.5 years then just say no. -
This coming from the guy that saw a good pitcher in a terrible pitcher in Giolito. You don't even get to see any of these kids. And that's just what many of them are , kids. When we were their ages we were doing bong hits and learning why we shouldn't drink so much.

My goodness. I know the AA OF has been bad and we all have a tendency to live in the moment but we all sure expect a lot of linear growth while we hear a lot of growth isn't linear stuff all the time. “Failure should be our teacher, not our undertaker. Failure is delay, not defeat. It is a temporary detour, not a dead end. The last 2 games were sweet as honeysuckle. We haven't seen a game pitched like that since Sale left. Moncada with a big double. Eloy with his 3rd homer in 2 nights.McCann got a hit and SB. Yolmer a silent 3 for4 .Tilson 1 for 3 with a walk though one AB was wasted by trying to advance runners with a bunt . Last 4 starts Gio 0.64 ERA . Yonder (who else) the only starter without a hit.
