A's at White Sox 7/9 Gameday Thread
Rowand44 replied to AddisonStSox's topic in 2005 Season in Review
QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 9, 2005 -> 05:08 PM) I remember Carlos having problems during these early 6 o'clock starts against the A's also that cost us a couple of runs. It's tough, nothing you can do about it. -
QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jul 9, 2005 -> 04:39 PM) Pitchers with a lot of promise who make $360,000 a year on first place teams usually are not available. Day walks a lot of guys. His numbers haven't been too impressive. A lot of people on this board says you have to add a run to NL pitcher's ERA's to determine how they will do in the AL. It all comes out very bad. It would mean he has a career AL equivalent ERA of 5.31. If they are trading for him to use as a chip for something better, that's great. To trade for him to actually contribute is far fetched. I agree with you about El Duque. I don't think he's ever been healthy this season, and I would be shocked if he doesn't go on the DL again. I think KW can do better than Day. That might be why he's looking at Day though so he can do better.

QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Jul 9, 2005 -> 02:55 PM) So it's guaranteed that he would have moved Pods over safely twice? Despite his recent appetite for strikeouts? Honestly, I'd say it's pretty close to a guarantee, he always gets the job done when he has to, always.

QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Jul 9, 2005 -> 04:04 PM) He is a pretty good defender. He did not get it because of steals alone. If that was the case, Jamal Crawford would've made the All NBA Defensive Team the year before last. Hughes is a pretty good defender and that's why he got the award, not because he led the league in steals. Hell, I think Jim Jackson led the league in steals in 99 and didn't get on the All NBA Defensive Team. To say it was just his steals is ludicrous. Once again I'll compare it to the gold glove Jeter won. Some of the guys voting don't know what the hell they're doing. A lot of these awards mean squat.
-
QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Jul 8, 2005 -> 05:21 PM) Hughes is a pretty good on the ball defender. There's a reason why he was first team All NBA Defense. There's a ton of guys who are towards the top for steals and don't get the award so to suggest that he only got on because of his steal numbers is pretty poor. Hughes got the award because of his steals, period. He's not a good defender at all, in fact him making first team all defense was like Jeter winning a gold glove last year. A lot of these awards mean nothing, absolutely nothing.

QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jul 9, 2005 -> 03:45 PM) Turnbow has turned into a successful closer in Milwaukee and Jenks has done well since leaving Anaheim. I dunno, it's probably just a coincidence but both can throw close to 100 and you dont just give up arms like that. It's not like they're hurting for arms in their pen.

Ken Griffey Jr. baseball on Super Nintendo was awesome. Everytime I go by my grandma's house I still play that game a lot.

QUOTE(hammerhead johnson @ Jul 9, 2005 -> 03:38 PM) Jenks actually sounded like he had a brain. I wonder what the hell he was thinking when he was in the Angels organization. Also, I'm beginning to wonder why the Angels would just give up on this guy as well as Derrick Turnbow. Derrick has seemingly turned the corner and found himself some control, although we have yet to find out if Jenks can be relied upon on a consistent basis. With Jenks, it sounds like he really needed a change of scenery. With all the problems he had in the Angels organization it might have been hard for him to succeed, however it's really hard to give up on an arm like that, problems or not.
-
QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jul 9, 2005 -> 11:13 AM) he really is never gonna shake off AJ lol. The way it should be. I wish Contreras would do the same.
-
Kotsay's a good player but 7.5 is a lot of money for him. He is a great centerfielder but for a number 2 hitter his obp is pretty low but he is Billy Beane's boy so whatever.
-
Day's got a good arm and has been a pretty solid pitcher in his career. I wouldn't mind him but I don't want to give up much to get him. It doesn't sound like Colorado wants much in return for Wilson so we'll see I guess. Beck could be right as well though, maybe Day would be used as part of a deal for someone like Burnett where the Marlins would want a starting pitcher in return since they're still in the race.

QUOTE(forrestg @ Jul 9, 2005 -> 03:34 AM) If I had a girl like that I'd bat 600 and steal 200 bases a year and never get thrown out Maybe if you bat .600, steal 200 bases and never get thrown out you'll get a girl like that.

QUOTE(He_Gawn @ Jul 7, 2005 -> 01:31 PM) Just because my Jenks thread has been turned into a thread about my Melinda, we might as well make a separate thread. ^ ^ ^ And that my friends, is why you watch. Johanna is pretty damn fine too..... Not a fan, not that hot imo.

So I assume the next guy to get caught on roids is Kyle Farnsworth or Andy Sisco?
-
QUOTE(PutItOnTheBoard @ Jul 9, 2005 -> 01:54 AM) whats up with the A's havin our number.... We'll get 'em the next two. We've played atleast halfway decent against them at the Cell, we just have 0 chance at Oakland for whatever reason.
-
QUOTE(YASNY @ Jul 9, 2005 -> 12:55 AM) I'm going to order SI to get that box they always put together when a team wins a championship. That'll be the only reason I order SI. If the White Sox win the world series I'd be screwed financially, every penny I have would be gone. Oh well.

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Jul 9, 2005 -> 01:26 AM) That was my main beef. In the first AB, he took a high and outside pitch the other way... WHY? In the second AB, he looked scared to fail again, so he left the bat on his shoulder and watched 3-0 and 3-1 pitches that could have easily be grounded to the right side. He fought off one tough pitch, then took a pitchers pitch looking for the walk again. It would have been fine with me if he struck out in both at bats swinging too early at change-ups, because then I at least know that he was up there with a plan to hook everything. As it was, his only plan was "hope to not screw up", and that's a sure fire way to ensure you are going to screw up. It was the same thing with the SBs last season. He just didn't have the confidence to get the job done. I'm 100 percent with you on this. You know what, you're going to fail at the physical part of the game at times but his head wasn't into the game, I just don't understand what he was thinking up there and that's just inexcusable in my mind.

Numbers wise, Timo is better then Willie now, which ain't saying much. My thoughts of Willie really went down tonight and yes I know it's one game but the thing is I just don't know where his head was. He was trying to shoot the ball into left field in those situations where he either should have bunted or just yanked something. Saying all that, Willie is still the more valuable player in my opinion because of his ability to pinch run but if Gooch needs a day off it needs to be Pablo hitting in that 2 hole.
-
QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Jul 9, 2005 -> 01:11 AM) He did, however, advance a runner from first to second with a nice sac bunt, so he could have batted second in our line-up tonight and been a great help.
-
Getz's obp down to .654 EDIT: Scrath that, that was from yesterday but you get the picture, he's been good so far. I know everyone is saying he'll probably move through the ranks pretty quickly and I'd have to agree.
-
QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Jul 8, 2005 -> 10:50 PM) LOL this is the funiest. Subtract these 3 guys from the team, replace them with real major leaguers, and we have a few more wins this season. That we're congratulating them on a well played game tells you how bad we were tonight. They were both good tonight, hate them as much as you want but they did their jobs tonight.
-
This was just a blah game. If Tadahito is in there this is probably a victory, Willie was horrendous today. Scott's on 2nd twice with nobody out, he doesn't even attempt a bunt(he showed the first time but didn't attempt one) then he doesn't even try hooking the ball to get Scotty over, he was trying to push the ball to the left side for some reason, I don't know what was going through his mind. Sorry about this mini rant and I'm not against Willie or anything like that but he was awful, absolutely awful today.
-
How'd Schmidt look tonight?? By his numbers it looked like he pitched pretty solid against a great lineup, I was out and didn't have a chance to see him pitch. For anyone who saw him pitch how'd he look??

How many games up do we need to be in July

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jul 8, 2005 -> 02:31 PM) I believe Santana hasn't won a game in a month. Look what he did in the 2nd half last year. All I'm saying to everyone is never count out the Twins, I think we would have all learned that by now. People were saying the same things about them last year too "they're not the same team, they're just not as good," etc. I've just learned never to count those guys out, you just can't. -
QUOTE(Balance @ Jul 8, 2005 -> 02:16 PM) This is the beginning of the end for the Cubs. I wonder if it's the beginning of the end for Dusty Baker.... Nope.
