  1. well if he can consistently throw that curve with his fastball hes going to be a stud
  2. feed has been working for like 3 pitches so far....frustrating
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 28, 2017 -> 10:47 AM) In real terms, we probably haven't had a guy this highly thought of since either Frank Thomas or Robin Ventura. not a good end result, but borchard was close
  4. i also have 0 expectations for davidson, hes done absoutely nothign to prove that he is even a major league backup let alone a regular...i just dont see the point in paying for veteran with limited upside who will be a slight upgrade over a young player with limited upside
  5. guy has been in my sox talk avatar since i started here, but i agree with above - I'm not really sure how he fits in....i suppose purely for organizational depth at DH/1b, but assuming frazier stays, id rather see davidson there. If we were a 87 win team trying to get to 89, than sure, maybe give it a whirl, but no point in going from a 71 to 72-73 win team. especially because even if alvarez performs well, he will command next to nothing at the deadline
  6. respect him for doing what is most important for his family. one of my least liked sox ever though
  7. really nice inning from carson....got ahead which let him use the breaking ball....looked so much more composed than last year
  8. well fulmer's delivery is certainly cleaned up...threw a couple of nice breaking balls in that AB
  9. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Feb 24, 2017 -> 04:56 PM) Pretty damning indictment on Denzel if he didn't mention him. or butler
  10. oh my god. kaplan just asked forman about his vision for "what kind of team are you going forward?" Forman mentioned how they want guys who are going to work hard and specifically mentioned Felicio, Portis, Zipser and Payne !
  11. due to some quirky scheduling, I've had a ton of time to listen to sports talk radio in the last couple weeks. I honestly had tuned out for probably 6+ months prior as a result of the cubs hysteria and nothing worthwhile on the bears front...that said, oh my god the 9-12 time slots are just awful. the score duo (spiegel and the new guy) is beyond terrible. Absolutely nothing redeeming. Not smart, not interesting. If you are gonna be a doofus at least be entertaining. Carm and Jurko is at least listenable, but thats only beacuse of Carmen. Jurko is bad - offers no intelligent opinion on anything. At least sometimes he is somewhat funny.
  12. QUOTE (ptatc @ Feb 22, 2017 -> 09:35 AM) Manfred has mention a few times bout pace of play as he calls it. They want more action during the game as opposed to worrying about the actual game time. I agree. The less lollygagging the better. It's not an easy fix though. there was an interesting article from rosenthall about Manfred and his comments to the players union.... http://www.foxsports.com/mlb/story/mlb-com...ents-cba-022117 I dont know for sure, but I suspect the vast influx of statistical analysis is fairly significantly slowing down the pace of play. Tons of information to synthesize before making a decision (let alone the death of the slap hitter who puts the ball in play and never works the count). Id be interested to see what the conversation of a mound visit is like today vs what it was like 20 years ago.
  13. i consider myself a baseball purist, and i have no problem with this rule. as most have alluded to - this wont significantly alter the pace of play, but this affects so few plays overall its not a huge deal. Now if they end up moving toward the absurd runner on 2nd to start extra inning thing...
  14. QUOTE (Soha @ Feb 21, 2017 -> 03:26 PM) KW mentioned a specific pitcher had "the thing" (trouble throwing to bases) from a game he pulled up on July 23rd. I just checked, and sure enough Tyler Glasnow started for the Pirates that day and lasted 3 innings. well its really easy to just click on the box score and see that glasnow didnt make a throwing error that day. I was under the impression that he was just throwing that date out as a general example. I do wonder who the pitcher was, but i doubt that it was glasnow who had only 2 minor league errors last year
  15. someone is going to have to explain the severino love to me. in over 1500 minor league ABs his slash line is .243/.294/.338 i get that he is a very good defensive catcher, but doesn't seem the guy can hit a lick (and i could give a s*** about his 38 major league ABs)
  16. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Feb 21, 2017 -> 11:51 AM) They are extremely risky. I remember the Pedro Alvarez hype (sorry daa, I know that's your boy) who was an absolute joy to watch in college (talked about 1.1 since his freshman year). Matt Weiters as well (who slipped to 5, although his defensive reports weren't bad). I love Beer, but I wouldn't be shocked if he doesn't go 1.1 in '18 either depending on how this year goes. With that being said, what he did his freshman year was nothing short of incredible. He'd have to really fall off to not be at LEAST a 1.2/3. no, everything you said is totally fair and accurate. one thing to remember too is that Beer was really a HS senior when he put up those ridiculous numbers. Also, i have no idea what kind of athlete he is, but just by body type, i'm guessing beer could probably learn to play a corner OF spot too, whereas a guy like alvarez was destined for 1b eventually. Certainly a lot of ppl projected Kris Bryant to be 1b and who knows, maybe thats why Houston passed on him.
  17. swing reminds me of Robin actually - i dont see the high effort long swing path that harper has... honestly - if you think this guy is a future everyday player (let alone an allstar) you have to do this rebuild all out. gotta do it the entire way - no reason in drafting 4th and missing out on the sure things (or at least the guys who are as close as possible). Love that college baseball is back. I watch as many vandy games as possible every year (usually about 25-30). been such a fun program to follow - legitimate omaha contenders every year and perennially have a guy projected to be drafted in the top 5 or so, and usually a couple in the top 15. This year is no exception - Jeren Kendall will be a top 3 pick. Not sure how well he projects to the next level though - does everything well, but nothing truly outstanding aside from speed. Could be a carl crawford type I suppose - but not sure how well his power projects with a small frame. Kyle wright should also be a 1st half of first round pitcher - big right hander with mid 90s fastball, good change, decent breaking ball. Team will really miss RHP Donny Everett who tragically drowned the day before regionals last year (was the top prospect who didn't enter the draft and went to college instead) - also will miss Hayden Stone whos career is over after 2 Tommy johns (was at one point projected as first round pick)
  18. so we can probably close the wieters thread
  19. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Feb 11, 2017 -> 06:22 AM) Draymond Green might've finally clinched the DPOY (should've won in '15) with his performance last night. Gotta go back to game 3 of the '98 finals when Pippen ethered Utah for a comparable defensive performance by a non-center. thank god upper management put thibs in his place and took marquis teague instead
  20. scouting ranks on the fastballs for some of the guys at the top of our farm: Giolito: 80 Kopech: 80 Lopez: 70 Fuller: 70 Burdi: 75 Hansen: 70 Thats nuts.
  21. QUOTE (Heads22 @ Dec 7, 2016 -> 10:07 PM) Dear lord, if baseball doesn't work out, he has a nice career ahead of him as a PBS host explaining things in the calmest possible tone. seems like the total opposite personality wise from kopech haha
  22. while i agree with the fact that we have been horrendous at developing position players, there are two things that are currently giving me some comfort. 1 - we aren't done yet, and 2 - there has been a clear shift in philosophy in our evaluation of young hitters in the last year or two, and I think it will certainly be for the better in the future
  23. QUOTE (steveno89 @ Dec 7, 2016 -> 03:41 PM) Turner is not going anywhere guys. Please stop including him in discussions. If they wouldn't include him for Sale then he is not being traded for anyone short of Trout. I'm still not sure if any mlb farm system outside of the Yankees could even put together an acceptable package for both Quintana and Eaton. The surplus value makes the price incredibly steep. Even considering packages usually end up being 50 - 75% return of what we as fans think, it would still have to be massive Quintana alone would get a centerpiece of Robles and Lopez + one more solid piece between an organization's #10 - 30 Eaton's value would get you at least two top prospects + another piece Don't see this happening for Washington this is the best point made so far in this thread. I doubt this rumor, because there probably isnt a team that has a good enough farm to give us equal value for both. In other words the value of what we could get for trading eaton + value of what we could get for trading quintana in separate trades is greater than waht we could get if we packaged them
