The Democrat Thread
QUOTE (kapkomet @ May 27, 2010 -> 09:46 AM) Yea, Obama's SO compromising. You have to do it his way, or it's the highway. Which is why we have a public option and why we stopped that offshore drilling before it became a problem.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 27, 2010 -> 09:45 AM) Is the time listed Eastern? Don't we usually start at 6 down there? Yes, the game starts at 6:10 CST.

Yeah, right, like that's going to happen.

NBA Offseason Thread
QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ May 27, 2010 -> 09:41 AM) ESPN is reporting that a few of the major free agents are going to meet up and discuss what everyone is thinking. I'm pretty sure they all set themselves up to have the same agent(s) a few months ago.

Financial News
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 27, 2010 -> 09:22 AM) That'd be funny if it made sense. They already employ the "U.S. Treasury Department", so why not a whole country while they're at it?

The Republican Thread
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 26, 2010 -> 11:43 PM) http://weeklystandard.com/blogs/judging-ob...obamas-criteria Shouldn't you be complaining about how an extra $500 million is being wasted on top of the $15 billion a year we're already blowing on the border?

Tensions Grow in Korea
QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ May 27, 2010 -> 07:46 AM) How will China react to troops coming over the DMZ? How will SK and US react to Chinese troops pouring in from the north? Considering that most of them will be blown apart by the world's largest minefield...I think they're much more worried about the artillery than ground troops.

The Soxtalk Committee on Closing
QUOTE (T R U @ May 27, 2010 -> 04:16 AM) There is a little bit of a difference between Shingo being the closer for not even a full year and the body of work Jenks has done as our closer over the last 5 years.. Shingo had like a 15 year career closing in Japan. In 2005, the difference between Shingo-2004 and 2005 was obvious...he couldn't get his offspeed stuff over the plate. In 2004, he could throw every pitch in his arsenal for a strike, so you couldn't sit either on his fastball or on his changeup, because the difference between them was 40 mph and there was no time to react if you picked wrong. In 2005, he couldn't throw anything offspeed for a strike, so every batter went up there sitting on his fastball. Regardless of the body of work, when you can clearly see a guy is struggling with his control and that's leading directly to runs, you have a problem. Shingo had only blown 1 save by the time he lost the closer's role to Hermanson; he was 8/9. But he'd lost a couple games in extra innings, had an ERA over 7, and it was obvious to anyone watching that he'd lost the control he had the previous year.

2010 MLB Draft Catch All
QUOTE (BearSox @ May 26, 2010 -> 10:43 PM) Hopefully when he goes to give the card to Selig announcing the draft pick, or however the hell they do it, he makes sure Austin Wilson's name is on it. Wilson's an OF right? So, you're expecting Mitchell to make sure they hand in a card with the name of a guy he might be competing with for playing time?

AND THAT'S A WHITE SOX WINNER!!!
QUOTE (greg775 @ May 26, 2010 -> 06:30 PM) even though I think this team's maximum success rate this season would be to be a .500 team. We ain't anymore than that. Of course...a dominant closer solidifying the back end of that bullpen would probably be worth 3-4 wins to this team.

The Soxtalk Committee on Closing
QUOTE (greg775 @ May 26, 2010 -> 06:43 PM) If Bobby is as bad as many of you say, why in the hell would anybody trade for him? I guess many of you would take anything for him to get rid of him. So it's going to be a trade where we get some Class A stiff for Bobby? Because although he's sucking hard, he's sucking hard in the AL (and not the NL), and he's still throwing 95+ with a lot of his fastballs, topping out at 98. Between moving to the NL Carlos Silva style, and maybe getting a different pitching coach/catcher, teams would be willing to risk a couple million dollars on that if they have a weak bullpen. But...you're not getting anything back in terms of solid prospects, and if you don't trade him, he's getting non-tendered in the offseason.

The Soxtalk Committee on Closing
QUOTE (Heads22 @ May 26, 2010 -> 06:25 PM) Well, we could very well end tonight 6 back, since the Twins have a frickin block on beating the Yankees. But the Rays series (and the Twins versus Texas) may very well determine the season's course. If I'd seen anything at all from Quentin or Beckham, I might buy it, but they keep on falling flat.

The Soxtalk Committee on Closing
QUOTE (Heads22 @ May 26, 2010 -> 06:22 PM) Well, ideally, the team could actually get on a run and get back into it. Maybe it's just me, but I think this 4 game series against the Rays may be the end of that talk.

AND THAT'S A WHITE SOX WINNER!!!
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ May 26, 2010 -> 06:13 PM) Good lord, Balta. Fine. He's been one of the worst? Better? Correct. If you want to talk about the worst reliever in baseball, you've got to talk about Randy Williams. And I'm going to defend that to the last!

The Soxtalk Committee on Closing
QUOTE (fathom @ May 26, 2010 -> 06:08 PM) Give Santos the shot. Keep Thornton as the 8th inning guy. Try out Putz. He saves 5 in a row and that dramatically improves what you can trade him for in July.

The Soxtalk Committee on Closing
QUOTE (Heads22 @ May 26, 2010 -> 06:09 PM) Santos could honestly see a chance. I think they're, probably correctly, being careful with both his arm and his brain for this season.

AND THAT'S A WHITE SOX WINNER!!!
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ May 26, 2010 -> 05:58 PM) he's been as bad as any reliever in baseball Really, he's been awful, but I can give a list of names who've been worse. Randy Williams...you could argue he's been the worst regular reliever in baseball and I'd believe that.

AND THAT'S A WHITE SOX WINNER!!!
QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 26, 2010 -> 05:36 PM) There is no trend in there that I can see other than the trend of soxtalkers screaming for someones head 2 months into the season. Even still, he shouldn't be just given the 9th inning any more.

A Cold Weather Super Bowl!
QUOTE (T R U @ May 26, 2010 -> 05:15 PM) And what if the Super Bowl that year is like San Francisco vs Tampa Bay? You think NY gives a crap about that game.. Yes.
-
A Cold Weather Super Bowl!
QUOTE (T R U @ May 26, 2010 -> 05:07 PM) I agree the TV ratings would prolly go up too, how much more? I dunno, does a casual fan really care about the weather that much to influence whether they will watch the super bowl or not? Also, what about the actual game itself? You don't think there could be a dip in attendance there? Who wants to sit for 4+ hours in that weather? A dip in attendance at the super bowl...in New York City? You know the super-storm that killed everything in its path from the movie "The Day After Tomorrow"? Yeah, that storm would wind up freezing a packed stadium to death. And even if it did...every ticket would be sold anyway. The reason why the Ratings would be noticeable is that the ratings always skyrocket in the market where the game is played. NYC ratings would go through the roof, and the effect could well last years afterwards too.
