The indoctrination starts already
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Nov 7, 2008 -> 10:24 AM) With the insane increase in the cost of college tuition I'm curious why you would think that. Rich people can afford college, and they are predominatly not minority. By that single piece of logic, you be forcing poor and minority students into service at a rate disproportionate to the rest of the population.

The indoctrination starts already
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Nov 7, 2008 -> 10:18 AM) Am I the only person that watched Obama in the debates? Seems like he mentioned it at least a couple of times that he would give college students the option of a tax credit in exchange for community service. Would it really be an "option" for those who struggle to afford college? To me it would be optional in the same idea that loans were "optional". My other option was no college and a crappy job.

The indoctrination starts already
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Nov 7, 2008 -> 10:05 AM) From the same website: How dare they give college students the OPTION to perform community service. I have no problem with it being a term of service for accepting the scholarship. Out of curiousity would anyone look at the program differently in the light that it would require predominantly poor and/or minority students to be doing this work, as they would be the biggest groups utilizing a program like this?

The indoctrination starts already
I kind of broached this a while back in another topic, but it seems appropriate here... Is requiring public service an acceptable action to place on people who are not paying federal income taxes, or people who are paying a negative income tax rate?

MLB To End Coin Flips?
So it begs the question... If the season series is tied as well, then what would they do?

2009 Inauguration
QUOTE (lostfan @ Nov 7, 2008 -> 07:47 AM) I found out my wife, the Obama fanatic, already sent Rep. Sarbanes a letter. I told her I doubted we'd get tickets though unless we were party loyalists, campaign volunteers, or somehow knew Obama personally. Send requests to both of your sentators as well.

Michael Crichton Dead at Age 66
QUOTE (dasox24 @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 04:53 PM) Absolutely. Very good book... My favorite Crichton contribution has to be ER. I own seasons 1-7 and have watched season 1 probably like 3 times. The show might not be what it once was, but overall it is definitely the best medical drama ever. Its a good thing it is in its last year now. They are about 5 years too late honestly. Back in the day, it was by far the best thing on television.

The Economy, stupid
This one is a little more detailed... Going back again to the theme of the banks, this is the type of stuff that starts to happen when they aren't lending. Just to reinforce the point I had made before about how this stuff cascades through the economy, think of this specific project. Leins have been slapped on, and contstruction is halted. How many contractors and construction workers do you think it takes to build a 2000 foot building? Its not a big leap to see when that many people laid off and to imagine the multiplier affect that their contraction of spending has on the economy. http://archrecord.construction.com/news/da...1106chicago.asp

The Economy, stupid
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 6, 2008 -> 03:58 PM) This can either go here or in the Dems thread, but the company "Sands" that owns the Las Vegas Venetian/Palazzo resorts amongst many others and who's owner, Sheldon Adelson, is one of the richest people in the world and is a big Republican donor, is facing bankruptcy if they can't secure financing for some of the projects they started during the boom times. I didn't realize how many projects in Chicago were halted as well. http://featuresblogs.chicagotribune.com/th...hicago-spi.html

2009 Inauguration
I have not been there for an inauguration before. Sounds incredible though.

Robinson Cano
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Nov 6, 2008 -> 01:46 PM) '09: $6M '10: $9M '11: $10M '12: $14M team option ($2M buyout) '13: $15M team option ($2M buyout) So for a player with a very limited skill set he's pretty expensive. If he's not stroking doubles into the gaps he's not worth much since he can't run, draw walks or hit for big time power and showed last year that he's prone to lapses in concentration and can get lazy in the field. Wow, that gets really steep, even in '11, let alone the options years.

The Republican Thread
I would say Mike Huckabee would be the guy to look out for in 2012. I want to see Jindal at work before I crown him the "The next..."

Obama's Cabinet and Staff
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 6, 2008 -> 02:36 PM) I have a suggestion. Well two, really. 1. How about we take the lead from Obama and McCain here, and try to keep an open mind as to how the parties will deal with each other with this new administration, before we go labeling an entire party not sane. 2. And I'd like to hope that we, the relatively knowledgeable regular posters in the Buster, wait to see how the cabinet forms up before we start yelling "PARTISAN!!!!!" Even I am waiting to see what the whole package looks like.

Congressional Elections Results Thread
I would keep this in mind when talking about the Absentee ballots. Most were probably filed before the Stevens ruling came out. He had a very sizable lead until his conviction. I would guess those ballots favor him.

Penny's option declined....
Are we willing to pay what Marquis got a couple of winters ago from the Cubs for Penny (3 years $21 million) or more?

Arizona Fall League
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 08:41 PM) And how about how inaccurate he is on Poreda's velocity. I would be hugely surprised if he ever throws a fastball 90 mph. And Beckham's swing has been broken down and compared to A-rods, now its choppy? I think he has been listening to too many "scouts" at the local fudruckers. The Sox are infamous as an organization that sacrifices velocity for repeatability (is that a word?). They take pitchers, adjust their mechanics, and make them able to sustain control their abilities, instead of throwing at 100% every pitch with no control and potential for injury. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if the Sox organization has begun to make those changes to Aaron, and he makes it to Chicago throwing 4-5 mph slower than were seeing the scouting reports talk about.

The Economy, stupid
QUOTE (mr_genius @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 02:38 PM) looks like the DOW could tank -500 today And its down another 100 out of the open today. The big indicator is that the futures are trialing the cash index, which is never a good sign.

The Republican Thread
For all of the Facebookers out there, I set up a new group that pretty much describes how I feel about the election. Feel free to join, or to pass it along to others. Save our GOP! http://www.facebook.com/groups/edit.php?gi...6849&ref=mf

ELECTION NIGHT RESULTS
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 04:00 PM) For a fascinating trend...here's an NYT map breakdown by county of which areas of the country Senator McCain outperformed President Bush's 2004 numbers. Make your own assumptions about what drove this effect. Did they do one like this for Obama?

Talk Chicago Sports
The biggest problem with the "other" sites is been that the people who used to have tons of time to dedicate to this stuff, now are busy as hell with jobs, family, and college etc, when they used to be obligation free. We'd love to see the sites succeed, but I know we are just stretched out doing what little stuff we have time for now. If there are people who are interested in taking on some of these places and maybe getting a chance to help run the show, get ahold of me. We'd love to put this into good people's hands.

Black Panthers + Night Sticks = Voter Intimidation
QUOTE (lostfan @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 02:39 PM) I don't think so, he's just trying to make his point and get someone to answer his question. Although I don't think the logic is valid personally. The logic in my mind is this. When you have an anti-certian-race organization known for violence showing up at a polling place with weapons, it is wrong. I don't much care who is behind the mask. If that is illogical, so be it.

QUOTE (Steff @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 02:30 PM) I think his previous response is clear. But you keep asking. I'm sure eventually someone will fit your mold. ETA: isn't this egging on stuff not allowed from the sign and agree thread? Egging on stuff? OK, if that is egging someone on, please feel free to have me suspended. If I have broke the rules, I have no problem paying the price.

Poland can see Russia from it's house...
I found it interesting that the day after Obama wins, Russia announces this, and that Hamas and Israel started attacking each other again.
