Fans and the media bought for years how JR just broke even every year. It was genius on his part, and it worked. You probably remember the every dollar that comes in goes out line. Then he signed Dunn and re-signed AJP, and the media asked him where did you come up with the money? You save some here, you save some there was the response exposing his lie. He doesn't like to gamble with his money even though he will never need most he has in his checking account. And it probably isn't going to change. That said, there are still some good players available. I'm not too concerned yet. Just remember the White Sox wouldn't give Mark Buehrle anywhere near the 4 year $56 million contract he got with the Marlins. He was willing to take less. That was as safe as it gets.

Of the players who signed, who does everyone think the Sox were going to sign at the price they signed? Scherzer, no way. Semien....maybe but 7/175 is a lot to give a 2B who is 31 years old, and I've been told 2B are easy to find. Gray? Who cares. Does anyone really trust Rpbbie Ray for 5 years? There are still more realistic targets out there, but I'm not going to freak out JR didn't go Steve Cohen on Max. That is just nuts.

Compare salaries. If the White Sox actually did this enough, and not freak out and waste 6-8 million so many times, they may actually have the money to play at the top of the market. They squander so much every season in that price range.

It will end eventually and plenty will be out there. Maybe they thought they had a shot at Max, but only an idiot would give him $130 million for 3 years. I wouldn't give Semien 7 years. The fact is, if they want the top of the market, they are going to have to overpay by a lot. JR isn't down with that. They will still get some good players, and winning the offseason hasn't meant much recently.

They probably live in FL. Spring Training location is a pretty big deal, Many players live in the offseason near their teams facility so they can use it in the winter and spend an extra 6 weeks at home. For a west coast guy, unless they actually live near LA where driving to and from a gane can really be a problem, training in Phienix and spending you summer winning in Chicaho should be pretty attractive.

I think he winds up back with the Dodgers, but he has to look at the Sox if they are in on him and think with his addition it's a team that should dominate.
