It would be one thing if it was a successful team whose core got old and expensive and had to be torn down. But mediocre at best, awful at worst before the rebuild should indicate someone else should have done the rebuilding. Eventually winning will matter. JR isn’t going to own the team forever. RH has degrees from Michigan, Harvard, and Northwestern, so he is obviously bright, but building baseball teams doesn’t seem to be an area of expertise.

We can only hope he has learned lessons and when he gets to the point he was at before and failed miserably, he will be successful. One thing that would help is trying to get the team being as good as can be on opening day, not half assing saying you will add at the deadline. If that practice hasn't been eliminated, the sustained success goal will never be realized. Face it, the only time they won, Geoff Blum was the only addition. If you needed to add significantly at the deadline, White Sox fans may still be waiting. Juggernaut on opening day should be the goal.

Many were on ground balls. Many were on throws no one would get to. Blaming Abreu for TAs defense is pretty weak.

This kid will be correct eventually but I think he is just pulling things out of his ass at this point. The White Sox are interested enough where they are willing to give up assets for what could be a 1 year deal, but not interested enough to make him opt out? Doesn’t really add up.

I saw a quote the other day where Moncada told Renteria he can also play CF. I don’t think they would sign Rendon, considering he will want at least close to what they offered Machado, and that will eat into what would have been year 9 with Machado, which we were told if that money was committed for that season, they would be unable to afford a winning team. I also doubt they would now move Moncada again after one very successful season at 3B.

Daniels was a C in college. Ask Dan Hampton about Whitehair at C. I saw something the other day that basically said Whitehair was the best G in the division. So sure, move him back to C.
-
That is a bit dramatic. They improved by 4 wins. Crawford was basically a 2 win player for then for a couple of years, Gonzalez a 3 win player, and Beckett an injured one. With the cash outlay it wasn't that great of a deal

In 2020. So still around the going rate. Pretty good chance Price only declines moving forward and the 29 starts in 2020 is pretty optimistic.
-
Steamer projects Benetendi and Price to combine for a 5.0 WAR. It uses 29 starts for price. Giving up nothing would still require financial relief. And with what they pay to attend games, good like getting the fanbase to accept giving up Benetendi as part of a salary dump.

Yes, EE seems like a foregone conclusion at this point.

If the Sox signed Grandal, he would be 2 years younger than what Carlton Fisk was when the Sox signed him. The game has really changed.
-
If he turns down a QO this year, and winds up settling for less, yes. It was a new thing a couple of years ago. O he gets a pass on Moose the first time although it was poor representation. Boras isn’t good for every player. There are quite a few that hav been stung by him. But if you are a stud he will get you your money.

I think Cole, Strasburg, and Rendon aren’t happening. Everyone else I think they have a decent shot at if they target. Who that will be is anyone’s guess, but at least one of those in the next tier will be signed quickly followed by an I told you so from the offices at 35th and Shields.

The fact is the White Sox aren’t as desirable as other teams presently. If it was like the NBA where all the offers are basically the same, they would be screwed. The players don’t care that Bridgeport is a sleepy little area without 100 bars within walking distance of the ballpark. They don’t live there or go to these bars after games. But all things being equal, players like being paid, then playing for winning teams, preferable in fun environments. The last 2 pretty much go hand in hand with rare exception. But if you are a top guy and sign a 5 to 10 year contract, you would prefer to have total confidence the organization will be able to contend most of the time you are under contract. The White Sox can try to sell sustained success,, but they aren’t coming from a place of familiarity. A player really has to take a leap of faith thinking the White Sox are going to be good for a long time.

All you have to know is last year Buster Olney who isn’t a clown, actually laughed when others suggested the White Sox would sign Harper and/or Machado. i don’t think it is being a clown to assume the White Sox will not sign the top guys until they actually do. Let’s face it, $68 million is still their record contract. The Red Sox have a bigger one playing AAA. I fully expect them to convert on a household name this year. Then Rick will “check his box”, and it will be Back to business as usual just like with international free agents after they signed Robert. They will have to hord money to be able to keep their young players.
-
It’s somewhere on this site. It was during his press conference. This source you cited says might have. Plus letting him waste a summer in the DR for tax purposes also helped. If the Sox want to sign guys, just like any other team, they better be prepared to offer the most money, The pitch to sell their ability to build a team so come work for us for less didn’t work with Tanaka, it didn’t work with Ohtani. They made a nice video for Harper, but when they found out money was the priority, they quickly dropped out. They were $50 million short with Machado. Hahn said they were very interested in Michael Brantley, but he wanted to win. Maybe some day players will want to be White Sox, and may be willing to take slight discounts to make it happen,The league as a whole loves Chicago. But right now, they are just another team, one where winning doesn’t occur very often.
-
Luis Robert was quoted as saying the White Sox offered him the most money. One question is obvious, if the Sox don’t have to offer the most money, why aren’t they bringing in better players?
-
The last 2 times the White Sox were in the top 5 in payroll they last 90 games in 2007, and 99 games in 2013. The same dopes are calling the shots.
-
Yes, but that was stupid, and now the QO being attached has suppressed mid range free agent contracts enough where having it happen again should disqualify an agent from ever being an agent again.
-
So he is going to play the market a d wind up signing for less? I know it has happened before, but it happening here would mean his agent is awful. I fully expect him to either take this offer or sign another by the time his decision is due. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if they have basically agreed already and this may have been a move Jose's camp asked for so he can never be offered a QO again . I would be shocked if he turned down the QO and met with other teams.
-
What the QO does is guarantees Abreu will be back. Nothing more, nothing less. Maybe they have discussed 2 year deals, but this also gives him a one year option.
-
Maybe not 100% but probably 99%. He gets to adjust his no trade which will now include teams like the White Sox and Texas, leaving a bunch of teams that have a DH and don’t spend money. So to trade with these teams who need a DH,, even if giving up nothing, Boras will need some more money to waive it.
-
And all their money woes might be BS.
-
It all comes down to which teams need a DH. If it’s Cleveland and Oakland, he has to live with what he has. The other thing to consider is it is possible the NL gets the DH in 2021.
-
He also gets paid $4.4 million more in 2020 than in 2021 or 2022. If he has a big year again, 2 years and $40 million would be more money than he is owed. Plus there may be more suitors. Right now he is at White Sox maybe Texas. Next year it could be a few more. At any rate, no need to cry for him. He has all the money he will ever need.
