  1. QUOTE (zenryan @ Feb 6, 2015 -> 03:00 PM) I have no clue. I have the letter but didnt bother with the jacket. Probably for the best since my parents bought me a senior ring for like $300 and probably wore it like 3 times. Hah, this sounds familiar.
  2. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Feb 6, 2015 -> 01:59 PM) Yes, but runner distribution isn't predictive. So basically you can look back at a season or game and find out which hits or outs were the "biggest" and most important, but if you're talking about building a roster for the coming season, there's no reliable way to ensure that contact will come at the right times, so you have to assume that it will be the average number of times, which is baked into the linear weights values for all of the events, which comes out in total production, which brings us back to square one. So if two guys are 100 wRC+ guys, but one strikes out more, they're still equally valuable. You can look at stats like WPA and Clutch score to see which guy had the bigger impact, but the difference between those leverage related value and the context-neutral linear weights stats does not carry over from year to year. Also, it's beside the point, but a lot of the extra benefit (on average) received from contact outs versus strikeouts is negated by double plays. So the difference ends up being smaller than it intuitively seems. So I should build a diverse lineup and let the chips fall where they may.
  3. So the one year wedding anniversary is in April and I'm trying to get out ahead of this thing. Did some internet research and it appears that there are two types of gifts for year 1...the traditional "paper" gift or the modern "clocks" gift. Did you guys follow these rules or did you just figure out your own gift?
  4. QUOTE (bmags @ Feb 3, 2015 -> 01:10 PM) I guess I'm confused why the person was so concerned with the stigma of wolves eating humans when the commercial is a puppy being threatened by a wolf. Unless ... Well, Jake's friend said that the concern was about wolves preying on humans and their pets.
  5. QUOTE (bmags @ Feb 2, 2015 -> 01:51 PM) He didn't say All Star game, he said ALl Star weekend, and yes, the NBA does a much better job at making events EVENTS than the MLB. Do you think this is because of the marketing though or just the sport in general? Baseball is a relaxing, slow-paced, outdoor experience. The NBA is a bunch of athletic phenoms putting their skills on showcase at a much faster pace. I think it has more to do with the popularity of the sport itself than it does the marketing around the sport.
  6. QUOTE (Jake @ Feb 2, 2015 -> 01:18 PM) I have a friend who works in a national park in the northwest and she was irate about the Budweiser dog commercial. Apparently wolves are on the brink of extinction because of the false belief that they prey on humans and their pets when they rarely do anything of the sort. She figures portrayals like that will only harm the effort to gain support and stop wolf hunting. Supposedly the near-elimination of wolves in many areas has led to huge deforestation because their main prey (deer) have their populations go relatively unchecked and they just eat all the plant life. I thought we were well past these theories.
  7. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Feb 2, 2015 -> 08:41 AM) "Can someone explain to us what the internet is?" That was good. I agree with SS2k5, worst set of commercials i've ever seen. Liam Neeson was ok, Cranston was ok. The truck commercial was the best since it trolled everyone into believing their cable was going out. Everything else, D-. Halftime show was a halftime show. Perry did ok. It always cracks me up how the NFL always relies on music from 10-20 years ago. Missy Elliot? Lenny Kravitz? Snooze. I thought Bruno Mars last year was 100 times better. I vote ac/dc next year. I was at a party at a friend's and she has a tv setup outside...she had a big umbrella in front of the tv because it has actually rained here the last could weeks a bit...so I went to move the umbrella and it just happened to be right when that commercial was on and the screen went black...everyone started raising hell thinking I did it...it was pretty funny As for the worst....I dunno, that one year in the early 2000's with all the dot.com commercials was the worse to me by far.
  8. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Feb 1, 2015 -> 08:37 PM) Really? I thought it was awful, but then again I just hate that car. Yeah, but then again I just happened to be watching live when they did that segment on the Today show about the internet...always funny remembering how clueless we all were when it first started getting traction.
  9. I liked the BMW commercial with Bryant Gumbel and Katie Couric.
  10. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Feb 1, 2015 -> 01:11 PM) Ours was a short sale, giant pain in the ass mostly because of the other realtor. You do get a brand loyalty with the cordless tools just because it's cheaper to buy bare tools, so you only get one or two batteries and then the rest bare. I've had good luck with my Makita stuff, and dewalt is always good. I'm a Bosch guy, although I am far from handy around the house...I barely get by and stuff like hanging pictures and flatscreens
  11. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jan 27, 2015 -> 06:49 PM) Facebook was big for me too 2-3 years ago, but now it's basically dead. It's strange. You're not "cool" if you're in high school and you don't tweet nowadays. Hmmm...I guess I am an old fart..I don't use either instagram or the twitters. Although I don't much use Facebook either I guess, except to make sure I can remember everyone's birthday and kids names.
  12. QUOTE (thegringokid @ Feb 1, 2015 -> 09:33 AM) Maybe the writer meant to say that all 3 have become White Sox and have not been in the public eye or subjects of media attention like other pitching rotations. I could guess that would be the case of both Sale and Q (Who have never really demanded or attracted the media spotlight). They just seem to go about their business every 5 days and pitch the best they can. With Shark he does have those 4-5 years of publicity with the Cubs and his distaste for the FO there is well documented and known. Yeah, I think he just means the rotation has not quite gotten the fanfare that it may have if this were another team.
  13. Wow, re-discovering just how incredible an album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness is...can't believe it's 20 years old this year.
  14. This has been my life for the last several months and will continue to be for the next year or more. Thought some of you might find it interesting.
  15. QUOTE (farmteam @ Jan 29, 2015 -> 05:48 AM) Wasn't that only for the 1919 World Series, though? They did it as a "Woohoo, WWI is over!" kind of thing. No, it started out as 9 games in like 1903, and then they switched to 7 in 1917, then switched back from '19-21, then switched back to 7 again.
  16. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jan 28, 2015 -> 01:20 PM) http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/footb...0128-story.html Probably one of the best summaries of our lockeroom in 14 that I've seen, from Jay Feeley, who was in the lockeroom (and really is pretty much a member of the media these days). Agreed...that is spot-on...and very easy to believe.
  17. QUOTE (flavum @ Jan 28, 2015 -> 06:48 AM) Yes, and that's something that could work if they reduced the LCSs to best-of-5. Start the best-of-9 WS in a neutral site on a weekend. Gm 1- Neutral site (AL team home) Gm 2- Neutral site (NL team home) Gm 3- NL city (or whoever lost the All Star Game if that still applies) Tuesday off Gm 4- AL city Gm 5- AL city Friday off Gm 6- NL city Gm 7- NL city Monday off Gm 8- AL city Gm 9- AL city The WS once was a best of 9 series.
  18. QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Jan 24, 2015 -> 02:39 PM) Well, personally, I wouldn't recommend cocaine, heroin, weed or any of the other stuff, and only drink in moderation, it just isn't worth the cost... but it might help the writing. Just funning you, man. The anecdotes include drunken groping of waitresses at some of Denver's swankiest places, where he's actually been officially banned from, as well as numerous sexual harassment lawsuits against the Broncos FO, according to a woman I work closely with, who worked a long time at Dove Valley, and somehow, none of it ever even makes the local sports radio, as far as I know. And then there was this: http://www.denverpost.com/ci_23663809/bron...att-russell-tom "The drunken driving incidents involving Russell and Heckert have led to a potential greater concern about the front-office culture at Dove Valley. The perception is these are a bunch of guys having a good time watching tape." "Are they perfect? No. But there are a lot of really, really, really good people working here. And to say we have a culture problem here that centers around alcohol, I just don't believe that." "Indeed, the punishment could have been more severe. According to a Colorado State Patrol report, Russell had a blood-alcohol content of .246 — more than three times the legal limit when he was arrested after he hit a Breckenridge police SUV. Heckert, a former general manager with the Philadelphia Eagles and Cleveland Browns, had a blood-alcohol content of .162 upon his release from jail seven hours after he was arrested June 11, according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Department." These guys weren't just drunk, they were Fisk/LaRussa smashed. For the locals like oldsox - If Dove Valley were in Jeffco, Elway and his boys would be doing time. A woman I dated several years ago here in Vegas knew Elway and had some similar type stories...the guy certainly wasn't above using some mind-altering substances from time to time.
  19. Oh great...they thought this guy was the best for this role? You are going to outlaw how a team positions its defenders? Good gravy.
  20. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jan 23, 2015 -> 07:26 AM) I don't mean the way you use the language -- I can understand you just fine. It's the way you format things. In other words, what I mean is why do you write things like this? When it should be: In other words, what I mean is why do you write things like this? Could it be the device he is using? I've wondered the same thing...
  21. QUOTE (Tex @ Jan 22, 2015 -> 05:32 PM) Sorry I used the wrong word. I am talking about the cession in 1848. Gold was found a few months later. The Mexican-American war was started over Texas, but the impetus was really Manifest Destiny and Mexico turning down several offers to sell much of their country. All I will add is that Mexico and Latin America in general, has been particularly terrible at capitalizing on their numerous natural resources over the last several centuries. Not sure this would have changed the course of history as much as you suggest. Ultimately, we'll never know.
  22. QUOTE (LDF @ Jan 22, 2015 -> 12:24 PM) the sausage and cheese is much different down here. but nothing beats the chicago type of pizza. The pizza recipe in this cookbook is incredible.
  23. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jan 22, 2015 -> 10:03 AM) Cause it is stupid and completely overblown. If it were the Patriots complaining about this, the media would be talking about how the Pats are just sore losers, etc. Bottom line...this is a story only because it involves the Pats. Stupid stupid story. Actually, it's underblown...sorry, couldn't resist
  24. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 21, 2015 -> 01:28 PM) Garcia is only 8 months older than Jorge Soler. Keep that in mind when thinking about how much room the kid still has to grow into this game. Yeah, that's what we were told about Dayan. Put me in the camp that isn't high on Avisail...although I was very impressed with his work ethic and attitude last season...so maybe he will surprise me.
