QUOTE(Rex Kicka** @ Apr 24, 2007 -> 05:38 AM) Don't you mean more body bags? Carter had less body bags, I'm not certain how I should have written that.

Big Hurt Countdown to 500 Thread
QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Apr 23, 2007 -> 11:49 PM) I'm just sad that Frank won't get 3000 hits. The guy was one of the best pure average hitters for a long time in his career and it sucks he'll never reach what I consider the elite plateau for an offensive player (3000 hits). One thing that frustrated me with Frank the past 5 years is that he became much more interested in the homer and his average suffered immensely because of it. After a homer he doesn't have to run as hard . . . I've always thought that was a logical conclusion to not being the day to day first baseman. Eliminate the need for all around baseball muscles and with his ability to add muscle, why not bulk up and power 'em out? I think if he was asked to play first more, he would have stayed "slimmer" (at least by Frank standards) and remained more of an all around hitter. IIRC it's been longer than that, He hasn't hit for average since he was hurt in 2001.

Eventually, over the course of a season, the better players reach their historical levels, or damn close to them. That is why teams pay the big contracts.

Erstad/Anderson MEGAThread
With guys off to slow starts all over this lineup, at least we have one position that there is controversy.

Are we finally done.....
IIRC didn't he bat 3 or 4 in Japan? I wouldn't blame this all on Ozzie, Iguchi seemed to want to make the switch as well. If this was by his request/suggestion, and Ozzie gave him a chance, It won't be the worst experiment that a manager ever tried.

QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Apr 23, 2007 -> 09:19 AM) But you can't have bad music with great lyrics and still be a good song. That's why somebody invented poetry, great line. I remember a conversation between Joe Walsh and Steve Dahl. Steve was opening for Joe and later would come on stage for an encore. He was trying to find the lyrics to a James Gang tune Joe was planning (Walk Away). He told Joe he couldn't quite figure them out. Joe replied, Hay man, I wrote the song and I don't know the lyrics, that's back when I didn't care and now I just kind of slur them. Of course he was joking, but there was probably a lot of truth to it. Some song writers are "lyric" and some are "musical". It is probably best when the two collide, (thinking of John - Topin)

Flag at half-staff
QUOTE(mr_genius @ Apr 23, 2007 -> 10:28 PM) so anytime someone dies, that didn't expect to die, the flags should be at half-staff? if there's a big car accident and a bunch of people die should all flags be at half-staff? Unless it's a member of the armed services . . .

Flag at half-staff
QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Apr 23, 2007 -> 08:24 PM) I get the sentiment, but the green is unnecessary for Alaskan crab fishermen. They have a work-related mortality rate that is way up there. 296 work-related deaths occurred among Alaska's fishermen between 1990-2005. That's a fatality rate 23 times the overall U.S. work-related rate. The green was for them signing up for death as well. No one, outside some suicidally depressed sign up for death. I was grasping for a dangerous profession, not of the "serve and protect" variety. Maybe violet would have been a better color? BTW, Sig on the Northwestern is my favorite Captain.

33 Dead After Virginia Tech University Shooting
I was thinking about my post later today and should clarify. The nation has been mourning for that community. We've shared all the grief that the media has reported and in a sense are looking for closure or at least following towards a conclusion. I understand they want America out of their lives, but shouldn't we have a few stories of life going on. Sharing a bit of the healing?

Flag at half-staff
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Apr 23, 2007 -> 10:56 AM) Well, the obvious debate is that the VT students didnt sign up for possible death, the servicemen did. I have heard many servicemen speak of why they signed up. They sign up for many reasons, patriotism, education, adventure, job security, sense of duty. I never, ever, heard one say they signed up for possible death. That is possibly the most ignorant comment I've read on these boards in a very long time, They understand that their job involves risks, as does every job. Police, firemen, Alaska Crab Fishermen, but to trivialize their sacrifice because of a belief that they signed up for death is just so wrong.

All Star Voting
QUOTE(jasonxctf @ Apr 23, 2007 -> 08:42 AM) so if you are voting now, how do you know who deserves it? Based upon 15 games? Or do you wait until June, when things have leveled off a bit? I wait. It is just stupid to start the voting now.

What makes a great song. Music, rhythms, timing, tempo, vocals, style, subject, lyrics, hooks, arrangements? Balance it out. Can you forgive bad music for great lyrics, forgive bad lyrics for great music?

Take your time Paulie is playing fine. Oops, I forgot, he's a catcher. I could have swore I saw him playing first base when he was injured.

33 Dead After Virginia Tech University Shooting
QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Apr 23, 2007 -> 07:10 AM) Good for them. Hopefully the press listens to them, and respects their wishes. Of course there will then be some who say the media never follows up. They exploit the tragedy, then leave when the blood dries and never think about the after math. But hey, we've lost interest, who wants to hear anything more about VT? Take down the VT avatars and move on.

I pray that Kenny trades Erstad for a $1 bill
Any improvement from Erstad to Anderson would be incremental at this point and barely worth talking about. It isn't like we're going from a AAAA player to an All-Star. It's about as important as mouse sweat. Erstad's best years are in the rear view mirror, Anderson's are in front of him. So the question becomes here and now. Over the course of the season, there will be less mental errors with Erstad. He will set a better example of what it takes to play on the mlb level. Anderson must learn how to prepare and be ready when he gets those chances and I believe sometime this summer he'll receive a serious stint in the starting lineup. But until that point Erstad = Anderson in the lineup, each offering something different but the net contribution is about the same.
