QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 18, 2017 -> 08:13 PM) Hope this gets him going, but Burger's slugging has disappeared. 55 at bats without an extra base hit Could be fatigue. Not sure he's ever played this late into a season, let alone nearly everyday. I won't worry quite yet.

Reynaldo getting the call and the ball on Friday
witesoxfan replied to Rowand44's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Aug 18, 2017 -> 03:21 PM) I was watching a game on ESPN recently and they touched on this. There are more pitchers throwing mid to high nineties now more than as starters and relievers. That's going to make it very difficult on the aging veterans that don't react as quick as they did when younger. When Paulie first came up he could just react and turn on an upper nineties fastball without a problem but later in his career he had to cheat and guess fastball to keep up with those. Which leaves you susceptible to pitches down and away. It's a natural part of life. -

QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 18, 2017 -> 01:42 PM) I should probably start a Jose appreciation thread to see what everybody thinks but 100 RBI for four straight years if he makes it this year? That to me is pretty special. How many players in Sox history have done that? Is 30 years old really aging now? Is baseball becoming football? 30 used to be prime time for at least 6 more seasons. I'm really not trying to fight. I feel like Jose could be called "special" for sure. Nobody backing me on this? There hasn't been much talk about what kind of money he's gonna get for next season. I would assume 15 million a year would irritate many fans but 12 would be ok since he made 11 this year. I would think if you were ever going to trade him now is the time cause you could always re-sign him in 2020 when the team is good if you want. Yes, in fact, baseball is becoming quite a bit more like football. Now that we've moved out of the steroid era, guys playing past 35 and remaining very effective has become much, much more rare. This article was written in 2013 but it's just as valid now as it was 4 years ago. The average age was approximately 30 years old in 2002 and that age dropped to 26 in 2012. It has probably remained at about that age overall. Guys just can't play that long without some help. Beyond that, no, Jose Abreu is not a super special player. He is a good hitter who does not play very good defense. Leadership like his is not valued in the trade market because the leadership he provides the White Sox super young ballclub is not equal to the value it would offer in a clubhouse like the Red Sox. -

When we say that other teams will value Jose Abreu as a 2 WAR 1B who is a good hitter and doesn't do a lot else but the Sox value Jose Abreu as about a 5-6 WAR player and that will be reflected in the asking price for him and that's why it's so unlikely that Abreu will be traded - this is why. -
QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 17, 2017 -> 11:55 AM) Royals are wasting a big year out of Moustakas. Who would have thought bullpen and starting pitching would be keeping KC mired in mediocrity? The tragic death of Ventura really decimated that team for now and probably years to come. Took away quite a 1-2 punch in Ventura/Duffy. Still such a sad story. I don't follow the minor leagues much at all. I know the Royals are considered to be out of talent down there. But the question is do they have a handful of pitching/hitting prospects who will be good that their future is still reasonable? I figure they'll probably keep Hosmer, Cain and Escobar and lose Moustakas. I guess they could lose both Hosmer/Moustakas if the Yankees, Red Sox or Dodgers want those guys bad enough. The Royals will be blowing up their team unless ownership signs a bunch of dudes to ill advised contract extensions.

2017 Offseason White Sox News, Notes, and Tweets thread

QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 17, 2017 -> 11:40 AM) I share you angst oldsox. I like reading criticism now and then to go with all the sunshine. The current bullpen is not even a good minor league bullpen. This is the point of the current bullpen. Take 7 random minor league arms, throw them at a wall, see what sticks. -

QUOTE (oldsox @ Aug 16, 2017 -> 09:38 PM) Herm Edwards Logic: "You play to win the game. Hello. You play to win the game." Clearly the Sox are doing a great job of that this year. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Aug 17, 2017 -> 12:22 AM) LOL No, it's a request to have some semblance of competence on this team. There is no one - not one bullpen pitcher - who should be on a major league roster. Not one. Do you think a game like this and loss after loss helps development? And Petricka - good lord, he's never been any good at all. At what point since Quintana has been traded have they shown any semblance of being a competent team? -
This bullpen is really something else. (hoping I say the same thing 2 years from now, but in a different context)

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 16, 2017 -> 12:38 PM) What does amuse me is the blind faith people are putting in this front office. Supposedly they couldn't identify major league pieces that fit a winning roster, couldn't draft or develop for s*** for years, now they acquire all these prospects and are geniuses. They are going to win 100 games a year for a decade. To me, identifying major league players who can help a team vs. prospects who will develop into stars, seems to be a lot easier. And the people in charge failed to do the easy one. Why is it a slam dunk this is going to work out just fine? The wrong guys go south and this could be a disaster. They did what they did, and probably what they had to do, I'm still looking at it cautiously. I'm not sold on the talent evaluators and developers. I don't know why they suddenly would become top of the line. I would never say it's a slam dunk, but I personally feel 100x better today about the direction and future of this franchise than I did prior to 2016, 2015, or 2014, and I really liked some of the moves those teams made prior to the season. -

QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Aug 16, 2017 -> 11:46 AM) Ah, splendid! Another plan. It's always so very comforting knowing these two have a "plan" that they are executing. Now they have this "5 year plan" they're involved in, which is not to be confused with the "3 year plan" they informed us all about in 2015... https://www.google.com/amp/chicago.cbslocal...y-williams/amp/ ...for which if you do the math, we're wrapping up Year 3 of THAT plan as we speak. How'd that one turn out? No, forgive those skeptical of this duo's ability to successfully carry out a plan until we finally see what all of their plans over their 17 years of trying their hand at this have failed to achieve: SUSTAINABLE WINNING.i Yeah, no, there isn't anything different between what the White Sox have done in the last 9 months and what they did in 2015. I won't argue with you because if you can't see that they actually have a solid plan in place to develop sustainable winning, then your head has been in the sand for that same 9 month period. -

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 15, 2017 -> 10:27 PM) Would have waited until at least 2019 to do this...we also "won" a couple of off-seasons recently, only to have absolutely nothing to show for it. This is absolutely ludicrous logic. These guys have put together a 5 year plan, and you're idea was to not have their contracts renewed long term until 2019? You don't have any idea how it's going to turn out by 2019. Give them their job security, let them work, and if it hasn't worked by 2021 (or 2020, frankly), then you are able to go in a different direction. -
QUOTE (miracleon35th @ Aug 16, 2017 -> 10:47 AM) JR is all about loyalty to the White Sox organization from the bottom to the top. I see that discussed here from time to time, such as when he brought former players like Getz, Thome, and others back into the organization. The flip side of JR is when he perceives that someone has been disloyal in some way, or unappreciative, or when someone does damage to the organization for their personal benefit. As far as rating the worst Managers in Sox history (or let's say over the last few decades of for as long as one can remember) I have Robin Ventura as the worst. That is saying something because I liked him as a player and wanted him to succeed in that role. I initially liked his laid back style, which was welcome departure after Ozzie , but that quickly got old, just like Jay Cutler's sideline demeanor. Renteria pisses me off because he bunts too much in situations that I often disagree with. Sorry for the long post. Robin Ventura was not a good manager, but within the last 30 years, I don't know that you'll find anyone worse than Bevington. He is one of the worst managers in the majors in that time.
-
QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Aug 15, 2017 -> 08:56 PM) I would take him back as manager. Maybe not my first choice but his teams largely came ready to play for him. His roster control (even if not official) was a bit out of control though. Out of the 5 last managers he's by far the best of them. You must not have been watching in 2011.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 15, 2017 -> 04:20 PM) There is no reason for the Sox to be giving even marginal players away. While he clearly wasn't ready this year, that actually is the entire reason he was available this year to the Sox. Get him his 90 days and they you own his rights for the next 5 years. That is the best way to handle this. I know it was the Padres, but the dude struck out 9 guys in like 4 innings. Really, that tells me there is something there. It's not easy to strike out 9 guys in 4 innings at any professional level, let alone in the majors. May as well run him out there and let him pitch.

QUOTE (BamaDoc @ Aug 15, 2017 -> 03:47 PM) Did Kopech throw in the instructional league last year? If so it won't be as much of a jump in innings. In the regular season and AFL last year, Michael Kopech threw 78.2 IP. He is 40 above that right now. He is going to get shutdown very quickly, I'd say one or two more starts at most.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Aug 13, 2017 -> 06:31 PM) Some of you goons just don't know what a rebuild is. They'll spend on FA when they're ready to win. That's definitely not next year and might not be 2019, though the latter year is where you expect to see some legitimate improvements. THE TRUTH (other than maybe the "goon" thing)

QUOTE (miracleon35th @ Aug 13, 2017 -> 10:55 PM) Tony Kemp is Leury Garica ...at best. Redundant mid level outfield talent. I hope the Sox received some salary relief on what they owed Clippy. Otherwise that trade does not seem to make much sense for the White Sox. In any case, no big deal here. The most interesting aspect of this is considering why Houston would even want Clippy, unless they just wanted another innings burner to bide time and give their main relievers some rest as they prepare for the play-offs. LOL yes, let's not get average to above average players with versatility for s***ty relievers who are free agents at the end of the year who were only included in a trade to offset salaries. I am literally laughing at how ridiculous this post and premise is. -

Guys, I didn't believe it before, but now I am sure of it - the White Sox are in full on rebuild mode. I thought with a young group of fire throwers in the bullpen and a veteran saddled rotation, along with a rejuvenated offense, the Sox were absolutely still trying to contend. But, with the trade of Tyler Clippard, I now have absolutely no doubt that they are rebuilding. Killer blow to the bullpen. Smdh -

In 71 plate appearances, Moncada has 13 walks. In 411 PAs this year, Tim Anderson has 10 walks.
-
QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 9, 2017 -> 11:10 PM) Tim Anderson had a great game. Has he come of age? Miguel G. is horrific most nights but does have a few outings like this. I'd say he could be a 5 starter on the team next year. He'll be the 5th starter for a team next year, that's for sure.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 9, 2017 -> 02:26 PM) I hope you judge all our players as quickly as you judged Davidson and deemed him incapable of improving on some good performances his rookie season. Like I said on to the next guy. I don't know why we'd waste any more time on Davidson if we know he's a replacement level player. Put somebody else in there to hold the fort for Burger. Will you judge Burger in the same amount of at bats? If Burger shows he can't walk and strikes out too much while not hitting for nearly enough average or providing very good defense after 4,421 plate appearances, yes, I will judge him the same way.
