  1. Gerardo "Rico Suave" Parra is not pleased with this announcement...so much for CarGo recruiting him to Colorado.
  2. I never understood this irrational fear of color of somebody's skin. Greg, now you've done it...remember your Subway LGBT/bathroom comments? How is there any difference between irrational fear of an African-American or Mexican-American and someone who's LGBT making you feel uncomfortable? How can one be rational and the other not? (Unless you want to argue the whole nature vs. nurture, it's a decision or choice to be LGBT, but who would deliberately choose that with all the prejudice they would face in life?) As far as Mexico vs. the US. I lived in Colombia for one year, and I can honestly say I never felt in danger, but that's because I was (treated as) a tourist (while working there) even though I saw military/police with guns all over the country and a sicario/motorcycle assassin take someone out about 100 yards from where I was eating dinner once. My idea was that I might be robbed/drugged (this happened once, in the wrong bar by myself, too overconfident of my security), but I never ever felt I would be murdered, because it would bring down too much heat on the country's tourism industry. On the other hand, I grew up in Iowa and I couldn't imagine a safer environment for kids...maybe 1-2 murders, at most, in our city of roughly 30,000 per year. That said, we also knew in Davenport, Rock Island and East Moline it was a big more dangerous than the suburbs. So part of it's location in the city, definitely (as those who live/work in Chicago can attest). Personally, I feel Thailand is much more dangerous for foreigners than either Mexico or the US, but that also depends on whether you're a tourst or a long-term resident/work permit holder and know your way around, what to do and not to do, don't get drunk or pick fights that always end up with 4-6 Thais against one foreigner/farang. So I get the point about Mexico...I felt the same way around rural areas of Colombia, some of the most beautiful scenery in the world and a place I could easily envision retiring if not for issues with accessibility of quality health care, internet speeds and government stability (or lack thereof). In fact, the places we perceive to be more dangerous (like Colombia) are often less so than many Central American countries like Honduras, Costa Rica, etc. But always know your surroundings. I remember being in Mexico (Nuevo Laredo) over New Year's once and we couldn't go outside because you very well MIGHT get hit by a stray bullet that was fired into the air in celebration coming back down to earth, lol. Both posters are right, in their own perceptions....and both are wrong to believe there are absolute rights and wrongs for everyone, or a "generally right" answer that will please everyone, equally.
  3. Moncada...but I think we'll be hearing that name soon enough in connection with Boston's big league team. The main question remaining is where will he play? 3B? DH? corner OF?
  4. Latest speculation was Bruce to the Nationals, fwiw...so that's one Cargo suitor off the list, if it does in fact take place.
  5. It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood, a beautiful day in the neighborhood, would you be, would you be, my neighbor? (or is it wouldn't you be...haha) Fred "Mr." Rogers
  6. And, could the White Sox fans/front office ever live with helping the Cubs win the World Series? It's not like they (the Cubs' front office) were (completely) crucified for the Garland/Karchner trade...this would be a bit more dramatic, in terms of directly helping them in the middle of a season at the trade deadline and the White Sox basically blowing off the opportunity to contend for a wild card spot.
  7. White Sox are going to have some interesting decisions with Q and Robertson. If you could have Moncada, Benitendi and, let's say, Baez or Contreras, would you do it, knowing that would submarine any remaining wild card chance but put you in a much better position to compete in 2018 and 2019? (Fwiw, the Cubs are not likely to be part with Schwarber for Robertson...although Jones AND Robertson would at least make them think a second or two about it.) Including Robertson AND Nate Jones together as a package? If Burdi is as good as advertised, and maybe Hansen ends up there instead of starting (going max effort velocity-wise for short stretches), then you have the makings of a team that could make a deep run if they could get progressions from Rodon/Abreu/Shields and use the money freed up by trading Robertson to fill in a rotation hole (along with Fulmer). Heck, you could send Rodon down to AAA for the month of August JUST to work on his secondary pitches and then bring him back again in September to rejoin the rotation...with Fulmer and Burdi getting looks at that time, Fulmer as a spot starter/reliever. Maybe start looking at Jordan Stephens as well in different capacities. Or you stick Burdi, Hansen AND Fulmer in the pen...another option. Create the beginnings of a "super pen."
  8. https://www.yahoo.com/news/arrogance-warrio...-150506772.html Warriors have had many fortunate bounces go their way on the path to a superteam, not just "front office brilliance" The Wade-Heat story wasn't supposed to end like this (Miami Herald writer) http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/16855925...pposed-end-this
  9. http://www.southsidesox.com/2016/7/7/12116...wn-out-of-order Really good article that looks at Burdi, Fulmer and Adams...and how these last few days have affected their progression in the Sox system. Argues for Fulmer to the pen, holding back on rushing Burdi (for now) and concern that the Adams injury will slow down potential trade talks. Also notes we asked the Yankees about Gary Sanchez and got nowhere because of expected sky high asking price.
  10. "Dollar Store Superteam" is a good description of the White Sox as well....with Adam Dunn basically playing the role of DWade in 2011. You have a bunch of decent pieces, but, somehow, they don't seem to quite fit together into a cohesive whole. The main difference is that JR seems to feel it's more justified to spend money on an NBA head coach than MLB manager. The two-headed front office team is quite similar.
  11. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 6, 2016 -> 06:09 PM) Not following the Punisher part You are always kind of the "lay the law down/after school detention" mod. Chisoxfan and Southsider2k5 are more laid back... Northside is somewhere in the middle.
  12. https://www.yahoo.com/sports/news/dwyane-wa...-071104214.html Why putting Wade, Rondo and Butler together wasn't the greatest idea in the world..."dollar store superteam"
  13. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denzel_Valentine 3 pt. percentage went up every year he played...from 28% as a freshman to 44.4% as a senior.
  14. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/colum...706-column.html The funny thing when you read articles like this (by Haugh) is that almost nobody was saying the same things about the first half 2006 White Sox, and they ended up 26 games over .500 at the All-Star Break. This Cubs' team, at best, will be 24 games over, but more likely 22. Go Dodgers, Nationals and Mets....those are the best-suited opponents (assuming Kershaw's healthy) to wipe them out before the World Series.
  15. Westbrook "put off" by Durant's season-long friendship with rival Draymond Green https://www.yahoo.com/news/russell-westbroo...-232006231.html
  16. "LET IT GO!" Donald. You're only making yourself look like more of an ass comparing it to Frozen. That's just idiotic. What next, he's going to say he was "honoring Holocaust survivors and has raised millions for them..."?
  17. https://www.yahoo.com/sports/news/why-dwyan...-031027726.html Very good article on why Wade pretty much had no choice left but to leave the Heat...Riley now gambling everything on Whiteside and Winslow as the future (points out how they were pretty cold-blooded dealing with Alonzo Mourning as well at the end of his first run with the team).
  18. The man, identified by relatives as a St. Paul schools employee, died at HCMC, according to an uncle. The shooting followed a traffic stop near Larpenteur Avenue and Fry Street. On the video, the man is slumped next to a woman, his white T-shirt soaked with blood. St. Anthony police, which is the agency that patrols Falcon Heights, and the BCA are investigating.Graphic video shows aftermath of shooting by police officer in Falcon Heights. startribune.com Amazing how calm that woman was in the face of everything going on around her...she will probably be faulted on the internet for "acting like a detached TMZ reporter," but there's absolutely NOTHING she could have done to get the ambulance there any faster, and then you also have the element of the kid being involved. She had to have felt that the camera/footage was the only thing that could protect/save her and her child's life as well, as witnesses. Greg Vs. the phrase "All-Time" getting sorely tested these last 18-24 months. Pretty appropriate, here. One has a feeling that these police "extra judicial killings" will end about the same time that...well, not much hope for that at the moment.
  19. Not sure being "right in the middle" is where we aspired to be pre 2013, after 3 1/2 years of rebuiding/retooling...but it's SOMEWHERE. Some really nervous moments calling that game for HOU when they were up 5-0 early. Tied 7-7 Valbuena absolutely crushed this Edwin Diaz dude that has been K'ing nearly everyone (29 k's in 15+ IP)...then the M's manage to pull within 9-8 on a Cano oppo double off the scoreboard....2nd and 3rd, 1 out...Cruz K's against Gregerson, intentionally walk, then a K against their Korean in Lee to end the game on a checked swing. Exciting game...playoff atmosphere, just like the TOR/KC series that the Blue Jays absolutely dominated. TOR and HOU put KC and SEA behind us, the problem is those two teams both simultaneously gained against the Sox as well in the WC race. In other news, it actually rained INSIDE of SkyDome...think about that one for a moment or two.
  20. Rose-colored glasses thinking...but let those so inclined have their moment.
  21. Appreciation Threads are supposed to be for someone at the end of their career with a team...."pre-emptive" appreciation before he's even laced up his sneakers? For his play in HS or for Marquette? It's weird sometimes how similar the White Sox and Bulls can be....if it was 4-5 years ago, more fans would be elated. Of course, he probably wouldn't be so available, either.
  22. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Jul 6, 2016 -> 09:08 PM) genuine lol, well played. SouthSider should be more optimistic. He's starting to sound like Hawk when it comes to umpire reviews/challenges.
  23. QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ Jul 6, 2016 -> 09:06 PM) Tomorrow's an off day so maybe he just needed the work. Thankfully it was just 12 pitches and not 25-35...
  24. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Jul 6, 2016 -> 09:03 PM) hey the bulls got wade! And then the poster actually has to care about NBA basketball, haha. I love college basketball, but only watch the playoffs these days for NBA...ever since Jordan left the Bulls.
  25. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Jul 6, 2016 -> 09:02 PM) knowing his candy ass arm, he'll be unavailable next game. Ventura getting "too cute" here trying to get him into a game against his former team when it wasn't really necessary.
