Andrus to the Sox, expected to play 2B, 1 yr, $3 mil
caulfield12 replied to Heads22's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Until you add up all those similar bad contracts like Leury or Kelly and suddenly can't add much to payroll except castoffs. Pretty telling nobody was willing to give him a more generous deal coming off the 2nd half of last season...but at least we should have guaranteed stronger INF defense, overall. -
Never going to eat any money on that deal until 2024.

Watch he records a -0.6 fWAR after losing his hitting coaches from last year. -

Remillard/Sosa/Romy fluff piece threat clipped $1-2 million off that deal...lol. -
Only excuse is Bulls and Blackhawks? No sponsors left to sell advertising to...to offset production costs? Who exactly watches their non-live programming? Sigh.

Mike Clevinger under investigation for domestic violence
caulfield12 replied to RibbieRubarb's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Hahn and JR would fire him AND Martin would be the fifth starter until an injury...which would put who exactly but into the rotation? Lopez? Union grievance as well. -
Wasn't that the whole point of Leury? If they had one of these types of players ready for the big leagues...it would have saved almost $20 million. Mendick was sort of that player, in a way. Not sure how confident about him playing all the OF spots before the injury, though. Still prefer Hamilton's leadership and energy to Marisnick at this point in their respective careers. Toss up. Probably Hamilton can't recapture that last hurrah again.

2023 MLB offseason signings and rumors thread

They're wise to be careful about any deal well into mid to late 30's. Signing Soto to that deal at his age would likely lead to better results...although he actually had one of his worst seasons in 2022. Might be better off letting the season play out first. And then there's the uncertainty overhanging how much of their $50ish million RSN deal they actually see and WHEN. -
Mike Clevinger under investigation for domestic violence
caulfield12 replied to RibbieRubarb's topic in Pale Hose Talk
And in Clevinger’s case, the team didn’t realize Clevinger had also broken protocol until they had already flown back to Cleveland. It was a terrible look for both players, especially when the Cardinals are still dealing with a team-wide outbreak. You’d think other players would take it more seriously. But on Thursday, Plesac posted a long Instagram video to tell his side of the story. In doing so, he blamed the media for how he and Clevinger had been portrayed. Nick — the son of Indians manager Terry Francona — took to Twitter on Thursday and shared the six-plus minute video, telling Plesac to “shut the (expletive) up until he can demonstrate he isn’t an oxygen thief.” -

https://ftw.usatoday.com/2020/08/zach-plesac-terry-francona-son-nick-covid-protocol-rant-video-response Maybe if your father's life at that time was put at direct risk you might not think it was so humorous??? -
Career .706 hitter in the minors. What could go possibly wrong? If he was a Cardinals’ prospect at age 28, would expect RoY votes at the end of the season…we’ve probably sold 50-100 season tickets (equal number of refund requests) since the Clevinger debacle went public.

Still, the context of that moment in time matters...it was a huge deal to Francona and all their teammates. -
https://sports.yahoo.com/2023-fantasy-baseball-rankings-top-300-players-for-drafts-205934167.html Robert, Cease, Jimenez, TA7, Giolito, Vaughn, Lynn Rodon 41st, just ahead of Cease at 43. Robert still hanging onto his extremely high potential tag at 36. Benintendi, Liam, Moncada, Grandal, Graveman, Kopech and Colas (313) get votes as well.

More compelling scripts for Sox ticket agents to push...well, he's our a--hole now, so might as well just go ahead and support Sunshine since we're basically stuck with him anyway. -
Or Andy Heck...

You know this how, exactly??? Then again, I remember Bauer was going to be imprisoned for a decade for crushing someone’s skull…and was compared to everyone from Andrew Tate to the Fifty Shades of Grey protagonist. -
https://www.mlb.com/news/every-team-s-largest-contracts Now ahead of only the A’s and Pirates…passed up by KC for 27th with the Salvador Perez extension. One of those two teams is deliberately tanking in order to get a new stadium and/or relocation. Even the miserly Reds are ahead of the Sox due to the long-term Joey Votto extension. Pirates FA contract: Francisco Liriano, LHP (3/$39M, 2015) Extension: Ke'Bryan Hayes, 3B (8/$70M, 2022) Athletics FA contract: Billy Butler, 1B/DH (3/$30M, 2015) Extension: Eric Chavez, 3B (6/$66M, 2004) TB not surprising on the FA front, but the one that really stuck out was this one… Astros FA contract: Carlos Lee, 1B/LF (6/$100M, 2007)

https://soxmachine.com/2023/02/white-sox-want-you-to-know-how-much-they-like-romy-gonzalez/ Working against González: Just about everything else in his pro career. González struck out 112 times in 93 games during his otherwise charmed season, and that flaw was exploited in his cups of coffee. He’s struck out 39 times against just two walks over 109 MLB plate appearances, including a worrisome whiff rate against fastballs, as Josh and I hashed out in a podcast episode about the second base situation back in December. Throw in everything that came before his breakout — the 18th-round selection, the .693 OPS at Kannapolis as a 22-year-old, being left out of alternate training site plans — and it’s hard to understand how Romy became their homie. At best, I can make an easy argument to not dismiss González. Injury and illness prevented him from attempting to build on his breakout, yet his 2022 season could’ve been even worse. He climbed out of his minor-league rut after a midseason tonsillectomy, and a team with contender-level depth probably would’ve allowed González to finish the year on a higher note in Triple-A, rather than calling him up for MLB plate appearances that became less and less competitive. Either way, credit to González for salvaging what could’ve easily been a total loss, and to the point where he apparently has the inside track to second base.

Reddit crowd much tougher on Clevinger/Hahn than SoxTalk, lol. Lots of "last straw" comments. -

Well, essentially Benintendi is replacing AJ Pollock/Eloy to be more accurate.
