April 11th Game Thread White Sox versus Athletics
ILMOU replied to southsider2k5's topic in 2011 Season in Review
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Apr 11, 2011 -> 08:45 PM) How, again, is Thornton not a closer? His D has screwed him for the second time. His stuff didn't vaporize overnight. You seeing many swing and misses? I'm not. -

QUOTE (JohnCangelosi @ Apr 11, 2011 -> 08:11 PM) It's pathetic D for sure but that ball was hit pretty well. 3 batters, 3 balls smoked. The fundamental point is, he can't get it by anyone. He needs a lot of swing and misses to be successful. The MORE fundamental point is: Did MB ask out of this game???? If not, he needed to finish his CG shutout after only 99 pitches. We should just go with Humber in a regular rotation anyway, until he sucks, so there's no need to be so f***in p***y in managing the staff anyway. I'm not happy. -

QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Apr 9, 2011 -> 11:33 AM) Sox O isn't the problem, the D and BP need to get their heads out of their asses. Can't argue with that. I think the pen will be OK in the long run, whether MT remains the closer or not. D needs to sure up, or Ozzie's going to have to use Omar for late inning D replacement and motivate some asses. Omar is uncanny for getting a team focused on D, as we saw last year. Wasted a great performance by Crain last night. -

QUOTE (flavum @ Apr 9, 2011 -> 10:02 AM) Pierre LF, Beckham 2B, Rios CF, Konerko 1B, Quentin RF, Pierzynski C, Ramirez SS, Teahen DH, Morel 3B Once again, AJ batting ahead of at least two hitters who are better. I'll never understand this. -
QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Apr 7, 2011 -> 06:25 PM) Lol. We all love J4L though. Jackson is just a discussion that he won't budge on and that's fine. Some of us have our biases for certain players, whether we like to admit it or not. At the end of the day, it's I'll officially nominate AJP as my whipping boy of the team, and this really goes back to last year. I've come to fully expect badness like his bases loaded DP today, and utter failure in RBI situations generally. Anything, other than a lousy AB is a shock for me, almost. I don't consider myself a hater, but a little guilty here. Still love the intangibles, but when intangibles are all you got, you're Mark Kotsay, minus the hot wife. Prove me wrong AJP.

4/7/11 - Sox vs. Rays - 1:10 (CSN)

QUOTE (lostfan @ Apr 7, 2011 -> 06:02 PM) I told myself this year that I was not going to single out any player to hate like I did with Erstad, Wise, Kotsay, etc. I think Pena and Ohman are going to make this rougher than it has to be. Please let me be wrong. Not that I want to give our manager TOO much credit, but I noticed that so far, Ozzie has been using Ohman against righties to convince himself that WO couldn't possibly be useful as more than just a LOOGY. Maybe toughen him up even, or screw his stats over, so he'll have to get his next fifty lefties out to make up for it. A .625 BA against and 33.75ERA vs. righties and a .200BA against vs. lefties will be impossible for even the Ozzeroo to miss, and WO should find his LOOGY niche. Small sample size, yes, but for all our sakes, it should remain small. This could guarantee 7 bullpen guys needed all year even with a fully healthy JFP. Pena I'm more concerned about, in terms of usefulness and potential need of upgrade, but not too concerned just yet. -
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Apr 7, 2011 -> 04:38 PM) It's really unbelievable. I've been a regular poster for 8 years and I somehow root against certain guys, essentially wanting them to suck at the expense of the team just so I can say I was right and I can brag to a bunch of people Ive never seen before. He's acknowledged the psychosis. That's at least step 5 or 6. There's hope for the young man yet. Nothing but love.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Mar 24, 2011 -> 10:30 AM) I'll just pick one of the half dozen or so things you got wrong in this post and debunk it because I feel like looking at some numbers. There's more, of course. Sox are giving Dunn $56M, and KW got a bargain relative to the Werth signing that escalated the market three days later.

Super Official 2011 White Sox predictions thread

QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Mar 19, 2011 -> 07:36 AM) Beckham hits .340 This sounds crazy on the surface, but I also expect a huge breakout year for our 2B. Maybe closer to .320. Here's a crazy one. The Sox clinch the division on the same day that Paulie and the Donkey both hit their 400th career HR. Dunn's 46th, Paulie's 35th of the season. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 21, 2011 -> 05:53 PM) I never said I was a better fan. All I said was I can't understand wanting to find the negative in everything. Even when something is going well, you are there to piss on the parade. Instead of being a blind homer, you are pretty much what you think I am, except 180 degrees. You have become a blind hater. Instead of Hawk, you are a Jay Mariotti clone. Like I said, I don't get what the attraction that mentality is. I don't expect everything to go well, but I sure as hell hope it will. If I expected failure and was that upset about it all of the time, I wouldn't waste my time on the team. There are way better things I could be doing than waiting for failure. I know none of this is going to change anything, but it is how I feel, and it doesn't seem like I am alone in it. Well said.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Mar 21, 2011 -> 05:32 PM) The Yankees also have a farm system and cash to go out and upgrade if they really need to. We don't. Not much question that they WILL need to upgrade, IMO. That starting rotation is a joke for a team with a $200M+ payroll. I see them adding two high-priced pitchers by the deadline to try and salvage their season.

QUOTE (YASNY @ Mar 19, 2011 -> 07:52 AM) Why not look at every option? Agreed. And we can still utilize more lefties in the lineup moving forward, as we're likely to replace AJP in two years with a righty. Mitchell is going to have a fair amount of power, which should make his lineup position more flexible.

4-4 in today's game, HR & 2 Doubles - Avg. at .250. Not so much to worry about when numbers change so dramatically in one game.
-
QUOTE (flavum @ Mar 12, 2011 -> 01:56 PM) Buddy Bell is on with Farmer. Just said Mitchell is going to Winston-Salem. That's good news.
-
QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Mar 11, 2011 -> 06:38 PM) A bad player who is versatile is still a bad player. Had they only used such basic logic in evaluating Kotsay. Couldn't find the dead horse beating emoticon. Donde?

and now Travis Hafner is fast. I love Melton.

QUOTE (flavum @ Mar 5, 2011 -> 01:53 PM) In my book, it's Kenny's worst move as GM. Not the trade, but the extension. I'm sure he regrets it...he has to. Not KW's finest moment. I agree with an earlier poster who likes the development of Teahen's obvious suckitude. I want Morel at 3rd. Sox best play last year was with Omar at 3B solidifying the D. I don't think Morel will be a BA-like drag at the bottom of the lineup, either. The guy has been a great "adjuster" as he moved up in the system, and I expect decent offensive numbers frm him in the 9 hole this year. Might even be a decent option for the two hole, down the road apiece. The other benefit, if it motivates KW to lieterally "dump" the guy, is that it opens up a roster spot for a more exciting, dynamic player, of which I think we have a few options, possibly.

QUOTE (ChrisLikesBaseball @ Mar 3, 2011 -> 08:30 AM) I'm planning my first vacation in nearly 3 years and I'm thinking Denver/Colorado Springs would be a nice destination that I've never visited and the White Sox happen to be traveling there this season, so I can use that as an excuse to check another ballpark off of my list. I'm wondering if anyone's been there? What seats are unexpectedly good or great or good/great value? What special attractions or parts of the stadium should I be sure to see? Any other suggestions for summer activities in the area are welcome as well. I've lived in CO for about six years now, and my wife and I really like Coors Field. The "Rockpile", as mentioned, is a bleacher area beyond the center field garden area. It's REALLY cheap (sometimes tix as cheap as $1 or $2 on special at Safeway) but you're a llloooonnnnggg way from the action, given the sheer size of the place and how far back off the field you are. For my money, the best deal is the Wells Fargo Club Level. I mention the sponsorship because if you have a bank account of any kind at WF, club level seats are half price. For $25 the amenities and sightlines are fantastic, unbeatable really. Lots of gigantic, industrial strength sports bars in the LoDo area, along with some better retaurants, microbreweries and a few Jazz clubs. The wife and I like going to a place called My Brother's Bar which is a good 1 1/2 miles from the ballpark, but can be easily worked into a game night - oldest bar in Denver, featuring terrific burgers and a nice rear beer garden - kind of reminds me of Moody's on North Broadway in Chi-Town, if you've ever been there. I absolutely must get the full MLB package for the Tv in the next few weeks, 'cause the wife is at a tipping point of becoming more of a Rockies fan (she's not from Chicago) if I don't saturate her with 24/7 WhiteSox. She also thinks Tulo is hotter than Gordon Beckham, but I'm confident that will change this year. Extremely glad the beloved Sock is coming to Denver this year - I'll be at at least 2 of the 3 games.

Brewers @ White Sox, 3/01, Buehrle on the mound

Melton is amazing - He just called Sale "fearful" about three times. Could he mean fearless? Someone must have given him a memo - now saying Sale. Whoops, just said Sales again. Guy's on a roll. -

Melton is hilarious. He just called MB's opening day opponent Carmen Faustona. -
I just hope that Ozzie will make the right moves with the lineup, based on their performances as the season progresses. I agree that Rios is more of a "2/6 or lower" type of bat, and that a reasonably healthy Q (or even Dayan if he ramps up quickly enough in the OF) will provide better protection for Donkey-Kong. I certainly don't mind Donkey in the 3 hole to start the season, and I believe it will produce more runs than putting Alex there. I, for one, am expecting a BIG breakout year for Slayer, who, I believe, is following a familiar pattern of the sophomore slump - followed by really figuring it out in year three. Watching him now, you really can't believe how bad Troy Tulowitski was in year 2 - worse than Beckham, IMO - absolutely lost at the dish for most of the season. I never lost faith in Tulo, and I certainly haven't lost it for GB. I truly believe that THIS year, Gordon will be the bat we all thought he'd become - Tulo, w/o as much power, or Pedroia with a little more power. I think he sets up as our best candidate for the 3-hole longterm - how soon he gets there is anybody's guess. The only thing that is unfortunate, IMO, is that Ozzie is still VASTLY overrating AJP's abilities with the stick. Was Ozzie napping during ALL of AJ's AB's last season?? We'll see far too much of him in the 6 and 7 holes, and god forbid, if Gordon/Lexi slump early, even in the 2 hole. I think even Morel will be a significantly better hitter than AJ this year, but AJ will get too many AB's merely because of his left-handedness. As god-awful as AJP was overall, he was even worse in RBI situations - and he'll have too many of these opportunities again in 2011. It really does bother me that he'll likely bat higher in the order than Lexi on a consistent basis.

Who is the best player on the Sox right now?
ILMOU replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Feb 12, 2011 -> 09:48 AM) For 2011 and beyond........................Beckham.I'm cautiously optimistic that this will be the case. Looking for a huge breakout year - and eventually a 3-hole worthy bat. -
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Feb 6, 2011 -> 12:37 PM) Matt Holliday is pretty solid defensively. Carlos Lee would have been a better example. Haven't checked his stats. Watched him every game he was here in Colorado - wasn't impressed with the glove.
