  1. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 25, 2014 -> 09:14 PM) You just need to google. Alternate presentation Yet another. For more, I recommend Google. Snark aside, thank you.
  2. QUOTE (ptatc @ Aug 25, 2014 -> 08:53 PM) The lottery example really doesn't work because you don't get more chances. Your number of chances don't go up. You still only have one ticket or one chance. As I said unless you have one of the top two or three the chances of that player being really good is a crapshoot. As people were saying Beckham has out performed most of the players picked around him or at his spot. That isn't saying much for a top ten pick. Losing games to go from the 12th pick to the 7 pick really doesn't seem like an improved chance for a really good player. The only real benefit and it's an important one is having a picked protected if you sign a big FA. Just but all the tickets in a raffle are the same. All have the same chances of winning. Not every draft pick has the same odds of not only making the bigs, but producing. Pick #1 has a better chance than pick #30. And I would also believe that pick #7 has a better chance than pick #12. I wonder if anyone has done a study yet to see not only % of draft picks to reach the big leagues, 1 through 30, but also average career WAR by draft pick, 1 through 30. I'd be interested in taking an hour or two out of my night and doing this for like a 10 year span or something.
  3. QUOTE (ptatc @ Aug 25, 2014 -> 06:55 PM) No but you're missing my point. it isn't in relation to draft strategy. It's in relation to trying to lose to get a high draft pick. Unless you have one of the top couple of picks it's normally a crapshoot as has been discussed. so why root for it and torture yourself when it takes alot of luck to get the really good players, the "losing to get a high pick" really isn't an effective draft strategy. The higher the pick, the more options you have to chose from, that's just a fact. It's like saying your odds of winning a raffle don't change if you have only 1 ticket or 2. No, it does change. You are always better off with 2, even if the chances of you winning are low. Even if you believe the draft is a crapshoot, it's less of a crapshoot if you have a higher pick, even if it's marginal in your opinion.
  4. It seems like Adams hasn't pitched in forever.
  5. QUOTE (ptatc @ Aug 25, 2014 -> 01:53 PM) How did the #8 pick in the 2008 draft turn out? He accumulated more than 10x the amount of career WAR that the #9 pick did. That argument is really silly though. You don't forgo any strategy in the draft simply because a high round pick didn't pan out.
  6. QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 25, 2014 -> 01:59 AM) People get on me for being repetitious. What about you? We get it. You are not embarrassed by the pathetic play of your favorite team and want them to lose to get a better phantom draft pick. Why do you have to offend me by posting that fact all the time. Just.Win.White.Sox. Repetitious? It's a new day, different teams win and lose. It's called an update. It's like calling out a White Sox Winner thread for being repetitious....it's a new game, new day. Phantom draft pick? What does that even mean? Do you not believe the MLB draft exists? lol If this thread somehow offends you.....dont...read...it??? Or???
  7. Today the Sox gained a game on.... Rangers, Rockies, Cubs, and Phillies. Sox are now 8.5 GB of the #1 pick, and 4.5 GB of the #5 pick.
  8. QUOTE (MAX @ Aug 24, 2014 -> 01:06 PM) So you needed a viral, attention whoring event to become aware enough to make a donation, but everyone who had donated to ALS research before it existed is soulless if they are annoyed even a little bit. Gotcha. I dont believe in souls but that is still a pretty ignorant and derogatory thing to say. What are you some sort of donation hipster? "I donated to ALS before it was cool!" Would you prefer those 12 million or so new donors take their money back? Didn't think so.
  9. And the Sox will own the tiebreaker between every team except the Astros.
  10. Sox are currently sitting at the #10 pick. We are 4.5 GB of a top 5 pick. Let's go Dbacks, Red Sox, Cubs, Phillies, Twins, and whoever the Sox are playing on non-Chris Sale days!
  11. QUOTE (scs787 @ Aug 23, 2014 -> 11:06 PM) I know it's been brought up many a times, but Derek Jeter had 56 errors in 128 games one season and now he's a 5 time gold glove winner. And it should never be brought up again, but because it only proves the point, considering Derek Jeter is/was a garbage defender.
  12. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Aug 23, 2014 -> 08:26 AM) That is a pretty swing. Reminds me of Nelson Cruz.
  13. QUOTE (Brian @ Aug 23, 2014 -> 07:36 AM) Hes a hardcore podcaster, I think. Yep. Nerdist. He does a celebrity bowling show on YouTube that I enjoy.
  14. Castillo getting $4M more than Abreu did. LOL, good luck with that.
  15. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 10:28 PM) Ok, well, that's nice and all but there's only one Ben Zobrist and it ain't Marcus Semian. Semian hasn't even proven he can play 3B competently let alone 6 or 7 positions. Let alone sustain a 275 type average. His problem in April and early May was getting too deep into counts for the sake of getting deep into counts. It's one thing to be Jose Abreu or Mike Trout and do that (with the strikeouts) but if you don't have elite pitch recognition skills and hand eye ability you're not going to be very successful doing that. Adam Dunn is a good example of that idea in the extreme. But Marcus has good speed, scouts say what, like 55 or 60? So he should be able to sustain a high BABIP and help drive his average. But he's gonna have to take the bat off his shoulders a bit more. And oh yea, stop making a lot of errors. He's a good prospect with a lot to like imo but it's hardly a given he's even a solid starter let alone a borderline superstar like Zobrist. I'm not sure that you realize that comps are ceilings.
  16. The comp I keep coming back to for Semien is Ben Zobrist. Zobrist is basically a .270-.280 type hitter who gets on base around .360-.370 and is a 20 HR bat playing all over the infield.
  17. I did my challenge today and donated to ALS and Down Syndrome Association of NW Indiana. And honestly, without this challenge being a viral phenomenon, I probably would have never donated to ALS, so all the people who "hate how annoying it is" have no soul .
  18. What is the best piece of advice that your older brother Nick (played in Dodgers minor league system) has given you about minor league baseball life?
  19. Kind of a dumb, soft question but...... Which Kanny teammate or major leaguer would make the best speedskater? Which speedskater would make the best baseball player?
  20. What sort of habits or traits from speed skating can you carry over to the diamond? Do you feel speed skating gives you an advantage?
  21. Hey, great interview. I love how much Beck knows about himself and the approach he takes. He sounds like he has a real plan.
  22. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 20, 2014 -> 12:36 AM) He's not as good as Adam Eaton defensively...there was a ball hit a night or two ago that tipped off Danks' glove that I'm sure Eaton would have gotten to. That is, if he can actually stay on the field and stop trying to run through fences. Yeah, I'm not qute sure that Eaton gets that ball. I didn't catch the jump that Danks got on it, but considering how much taller he is than Eaton, I'm not sure that if it tips off Danks stretched out body that Eaton doesn't get a glove on it at all. Hardly a catch you should count on ANY centerfielder in the game to make.
  23. QUOTE (Charlie Haeger's Knuckles @ Aug 19, 2014 -> 06:42 PM) Didnt the Sox already say that if he gets called up he will start ~3 Sept games? QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Aug 19, 2014 -> 06:57 PM) I think Stone said that. If you can't find the info on whitesox.com it probably wasn't the Sox brass saying it. No. Stoney said he will start 3 games IN CHARLOTTE, then he will get called up and join the Sox BULLPEN. So he will be up Sept. 1st, and according to Stone, pitch out of the pen.
  24. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Aug 19, 2014 -> 01:23 AM) Darvish cleared waivers. Crazy. So did Beltre. MLBTR speculates it's because teams were afraid that claiming him would only give them 48 hours to work a deal, versus now where they have until the month is over.
  25. QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Aug 19, 2014 -> 12:20 AM) I am getting a degree in Sport Management (1 year left) and a Business Administration minor.. I am suppose to get an internship in order to complete my degree and I plan on doing it next summer. Will be applying to Frontier League teams around the St. Louis area, the Cardinals (I know some people who know people), and probably other minor league teams that aren't too far. We will see what happens but I am worried I won't be able to get one and I am screwed. I guess I could always go back to school for my masters if I can't get an internship I actually have seen far more internship openings than jobs, because they'd prefer to not pay someone (or pay them little), and use college credit as a reason. Hell I'd do an internship at this point, but I am no longer enrolled in college, so I can't receive college credit. http://www.teamworkonline.com/ is a good resource.
