1b of the future
I think they go out and sign Alonso. The Soto tier free agents will never be feasible under Jerry, but Pete might be in that theoretical sweet spot. In all honesty, if you look at our future needs it’s 1B and OF that are our biggest holes and the latter will be much easier for us to pull off a splashy signing.

What can we dream on for Fedde?
He also hates Korey “Katch the Ball” Lee although that may be because of his adoration for Maldonado. And don’t forget his undying hatred for “Madget” despite being totally cool with Getz trading for a guy that Madrigal would physically dominate at the bike racks.

White Sox acquire Corey Julks from HOU for RHP Luis Rodriguez, option to AAA, recall Dom Fletcher, Ortega DFA'd
I called you insane for suggesting Brad Keller was a “key part of our future” and I’d tell my mother the same thing if he she made such a trollish claim. As for Montgomery, he should be at AAA right now because he just turned 22 years old and had a 167 plate appearances above High A ball coming into this season. DeLoach is a 25 year old coming a full season of AAA ball. Why the f*** did we acquire this kid if he needed more seasoning? The same applies to Fletcher. You say he needed to be sent down to “reestablish good habits” but nothing in his performance in Charlotte warranted a call-up. Him getting called up again reeks of desperation after pretending Ortega was a major league OF. So yeah, I don’t really care all that much about us trading a random lottery ticket for another AAAA OF who might be a weak side bat in the majors. It’s more of the broader strategy and various misses when viewed in aggregate that is highly concerning. Again, it’s very early to evaluate Chris, but at the moment the dude looks in over his head and that’s truly terrifying when you acknowledge he must turn a 50 to 60 win team into a playoff contender without the luxury of a top 5 farm system to bank on.

Yes, the White Sox need to play games. Weren’t Fletcher and DeLoach acquired to help solve RF this season and also provide depth elsewhere in the OF in the case of injury? We traded a top 10 prospect and a controllable RP with serious upside (fully aware of his health issues) to get these guys and yet they are so unready for major league jobs that we must DFA controllable arms on the 40 man roster and trade minor league talent (even if just lottery tickets) so we can “play the games”. We also continue to play a 1B/DH type in RF, something we all criticized Hahn for and something that Getz implied we’d get away from, all because two of Getz’s legit acquisitions have been such massive flops so far. So yeah, you can continue to look at everything in isolation and say all these misses are “immaterial” or you can observe more holistically and be concerned that Getz may be in over his head. I don’t hate every single thing Getz has done as GM, but there are some massive red flags right now that shouldn’t be ignored. And that’s even more true when you acknowledge he probably wasn’t qualified for this role in the first place.

His endless crusade to rip advanced metrics truly is something.

You word for word said this. Matthew Thompson is still very young so no idea what point you were actually trying to make here. Regardless, people have every right to rip Chris Getz for trading 23 year old Matthew Thompson who didn’t require roster protection for a 26 year old LH relief prospect who requried a 40 man roster spot only to be released a few months later to add a AAAA outfielder (who was just released) to the mix since the two 25+ OF prospects he acquired this offseason for controllable talent aren’t yet quite ready for the show for reasons unknown. Is trading Matthew Thompson the end of the world? Of course not, but when evaluated as part of a larger series of moves it’s a bit concerning and people who are objective should actively call Getz out for it. For some reason, you like to sweep all these little misses and questionable decisions under the rug as either being “immaterial” or “business as usual” and then proceed to rip the crowd that is more vocal in ripping Getz as being irrational. The reality is we have one of the least talented major league rosters and shouldn’t proactively age up our roster on guys that offer absolutely nothing like Ortega. No idea how you can continue justify such actions for a team on pace to win 50 games.

I haven’t even participated in this argument, but once again you’re making up your own false narratives to attack posters you view as being anti Getz. Are you actually arguing minor league depth is not important? Or are you suggesting 23 year old Matthew is somehow a super old prospect? Because certainly we could have slotted Thompson in the AA bullpen and evaluated how he looked as a reliever. The idea we’re so overloaded with talent in our farm system that Thompson would have otherwise needed to be dumped is absolutely ludicrous.

No, but I trust @SoCalChiSox’s evaluation of young savages

Story on Sox trade possibilities...
100% agree. Again, a bad Lance Lynn returned a top 150 prospect and a very interesting relief prospect last year. Fedde will be a significantly more attractive asset and the return will illustrate that.

What can we dream on for Fedde?
We are going to need bats and won’t be able to add enough in free agency. I would 100% look to trade Fedde (and possibly with a reliever) for the best near ready OF prospect available. f***, Fedde + Kopech for Beavers and something else would be immaculate.

Fedde’s trade value rising! Would be sweet to get a legit, major league ready OF prospect for him.

Sorry, should have said cheap controllable year. But point remains the same, $7.5M is an absolute steal for what Fedde is providing right now.

Reminder that pitching is always overvalued at the trade deadline and this year will not be an exception. Now, guys who can potentially slot into a post-season rotation and provide regular season innings (say Fedde) are going to be far more valuable than your pure innings eaters (like Flexen). For low market teams that are strapped for cash and big market teams up against the luxury tax, Fedde’s reasonable and attractive option will be highly valuable. He just needs to keep pitching well to convince other clubs that this new version is the one to expect going forward and the not the guy who had to go to Korea to prove himself.

For Fedde? If he continues to pitch like this he will return a top 100 guy easily IMO.

What would your roadmap be to build a competitive roster by next year with Fedde?

5/11 Games
Feels like some SP promotions shouldn’t be too far off. Just not sure how much they want to subject guys to Charlotte, although Nastrini & Cannon may already clue us in on that answer.

Under what scenario would you consider offering Crochet and/or Kopech extensions?
Nightengale said the Sox are likely to trade Kopech in addition to Fedde, Flexen, Clevinger, Eloy, & Pham. I seriously doubt teams will be after Crochet at the deadline given the likelihood he will wear down and/or need to be shut down. I think Kopech’s time with the org is quickly coming to a close and they probably feel he’s too much of a head case to even consider an extension.

They added Clevinger and Pham since then

There will certainly be money to spend. The challenge is twofold though. Are there enough quality free agents out there to sign and will we be the ones to win the sweepstakes. And I’m not talking about the Soto’s of the world, but the next couple tiers down. Last I checked, this upcoming class didn’t look great from a positional player perspective.

I think there is zero chance that Fedde is here post trade deadline. He should probably be traded for a bat given how many holes we have currently. From my perspective, your 2025 rotation should be Crochet, three kids, and some sort of cheap vet in FA. The rest of our money needs to go to the offense.

I was strictly referring to trades. I liked both the Fedde & Pham moves.

Go back and look at the trades Getz has made and I have been consistent with my takes. I didn’t like the Fletcher trade because I viewed him as a low upside tweener whereas Mena was young & athletic with the possibility of untapped potential. I wasn’t a huge fan of the Santos return, and in particular, I viewed DeLoach as a AAAA type player. I found the Thompson for Horn trade to be a bit confusing strategy wise and the fact they already cut Bailey is concerning. I did like Cease trade as soon as it was made though, so I can assure you I’m not hating out of joy here. Unfortunately, when you have the worst major league roster assembled in recent money, every little bit of talent helps. And yeah, burning an arm with real upside like Mena for what certainly looks like a 4th OF hurts. Just because we have a lot of interesting young SP prospects doesn’t change the fact we could have used Mena in a trade for something more valuable. It was a highly questionable move at the time and even moreso now. That alone doesn’t mean Getz is going to fail, but it would be nice if one of the 25+ year old OFs he acquired could fill an actual spot (even if temporarily) instead of forcing us to cut more youngsters to create spots for a guy like Rafael Ortega.

Daniel Hudson was pretty awesome in 2009. Jon Rauch also had that one minor league pitcher of the year season.

I’m sorry, but trading controllable talent always matter. And the early returns outside of the Cease trade don’t look too hot.
