Why the Sox should NOT trade for Sean Manaea
Chicago White Sox replied to VAfan's topic in Pale Hose Talk
@VAfan - Still feel like we shouldn’t trade for Manaea? -

Yeah, kind of important for the Mets to weigh in on a trade involving them -

So you must hate Pollock & Engel then? -

I think it’s totally fair to call out Madrigal for his lack of durability, but the kid was a valuable hitter when he played which is the point ChiSox59 was making. It’s silly to say that rate based stats aren’t important. -

Need to acquire Manaea first for any chance of that happening -

I really can’t see it costing that much. I’d value Sheets + Kath or Ramos higher than what the A’s got for Bassitt. -
Again, you are moving the goalposts here. You argued both that Kimbrel was clearly going to be a disaster and that we didn’t need a closer in the first place. We debated that first point for weeks and you refused to acknowledge the fact the Dodgers & Rays being highly interested in Kimbrel mattered at all. Now, because a post Theo Cubs front office paid significant dollars for Suzuki is proof that he would have been a smart addition? What exactly have the Cubs done to demonstrate this elite scouting ability? Wasn’t the reason they had to rebuild is because they failed to create a pipeline of young talent beyond their original core? Also, what other teams were interested in Suzuki that are tremendous at scouting?

Lol…I love you use the “better and smarter FOs” point to support a Suzuki signing, but ignore it completely when it came to a Kimbrel acquisition.

I am disgusted by the amount of people on Twitter who think the cost for Manaea would be Andrew Vaughn. Just crazy how much the common fan (and Phil Rogers) struggles with player valuation. -

We literally have no one to replace him after 5 to 10 starts though. -

If they think Keuchel is cooked, you 100% upgrade now. -

I think zero chance they trade him for Montas who doesn’t have a lengthy track record and has some physical concerns as well. -

Zero chance it happens…just mind boggling that Phil Rogers still gets paid to cover baseball. -
He calls him a “fat fuck” all the time and thinks his knees are going to breakdown any second.

Sure, but if Sheets is the cost to upgrade from Keuchel to Manaea then I don’t think we have a choice. -

I’d love to keep Sheets, but with Pollock in the fold Gavin is going to get squeezed for at-bats as there is zero chance they go with a straight Sheets-Vaughn DH platoon. -

Nope, just feels like too much smoke and given we’re less than a week away from Opening Day we’re quickly approaching a boiling point. And with Kimbrel moved and $5M in cash now available, I think Hahn gets a bit more aggressive with his offers. -

You’re assuming everyone is healthy come October and it’s very possible someone is hurt or Kopech has simply run out of juice. Either way, it’s very apparent that relying on Kopech & Keuchel to fill out 2/5 of our rotation this year is incredibly risky. We need another horse and it appears the organization feels this way. I don’t want to pay a ridiculous price for Manaea, but I also don’t bad luck with the rotation to derail our season. -

So looking at the Bassitt & Gray trades as benchmarks, we’re probably looking at Manaea costing us a 45 FV or 40+ FV (if positional) prospect as the headliner along with a lesser secondary piece. From my perspective, Montgomery, Colas, & Vera are much closer to being 45+ FV prospects and are too valuable to be the headliner. That basically leaves Kath, Burger, Cespedes, Popeye, & maybe Ramos as possible headliners. Sheets is the one major leaguer you could add to the mix as well. If I had to guess, the Sox are trying to sell the A’s on one of Sheets or Burger as the main headliner while the A’s are still pushing for either better (Montgomery, Colas, & Vera) or younger (Kath, Popeye, Ramos) prospects. Ultimately I don’t see the Sox caving on the big three and I don’t think they want to give up Cespedes or Popeye given their potential newd at the major league level in the near-term. As such, I think we likely see one of Sheets, Burger, Kath, or Ramos paired with one of Thompson or Dalquist to get a deal done.
