  1. QUOTE (onedude @ Jun 15, 2017 -> 01:59 PM) Rollins had a similar regression his second "full" year. I'm willing to give Tim Anderson the whole year until I judge him. He'll likely get another season to prove himself though. Considering they signed him to a long term deal, he'll get a lot longer than that.
  2. I've been impressed with Holmberg and think he could be a multi-inning reliever. He gets hit hard second time through the order, like Covey, so starter is probably not in his future.
  3. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 14, 2017 -> 09:27 PM) Nothing to be gained by keeping him. Probably want to give some of his starts to the young guys I don't disagree, I just don't think any contending teams will want him. Like you said, he's awful, and not cheap. It probably depends on whether Hahn can trade Q or Shields, or both.
  4. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 14, 2017 -> 09:05 PM) Gonzalez really sucks this year. He will get traded at the deadline for a non top 20 org guy Doubt it. I think he finishes out the season with the Sox. That return (org depth, $ saved) seems more likely for Derek Holland.
  5. So far one prep pick, and it's a water polo guy who didn't expect to play baseball. Not what I was expecting.
  6. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jun 13, 2017 -> 10:07 PM) Help me understand the doubles though. I'm going purely off of my own eyes here, but it seems like he's getting a s***load more XBH, not just home runs. The picture is sort of incomplete right now, but launch angles and line drive rates don't seem to have changed drastically. He hit 18 doubles last year and has 14 already this year, so that isn't an illusion. He's actually swinging more (especially at pitches in the strike zone) and making more contact. As far as I can tell, he isn't doing anything radically different. He's making more contact and better contact, and he's also pulling the ball more, leading to more HR power, AND he's also riding a massive BABIP wave. I believe more in the power than the BA, but again, the picture is still incomplete.
  7. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jun 13, 2017 -> 10:34 PM) The thing that makes me uncomfortable about the BABIP % statistic is that it seems to equate all non-homer hit balls equally. So the guy who bashes it off the wall every at bat would have a "lucky" BABIP% while the guy who doinks it to the pitcher time and time again is "unlucky". Perhaps if it would distinguish between softly hit balls and hard-hit balls.... I realize Avi's under any measure is unsustainable...but he certainly does drive the ball a lot. And as they say, sometimes you make your own "luck." There are attempts to do this very thing, although I can imagine the border between Hard and Medium contact is sort of fuzzy and ill defined. Based on the Fangraphs page, two major trends for Avi this year: 1. He is making less weak contact and more "medium" contact. Hard hit % is about the same. 2. His pull rate is way up, 47% this year (from 37% last year) Based on this, I would expect the BABIP to regress, but it's entirely possible that the power breakout is real. If Avi is a 30 HR guy now, that would still make him valuable, even with a BA around .270
  8. It's nice to see some of the young guys contribute, but the main value of this game was to get Holland (hopefully) back on track.
  9. He's been solid, but he's a middle reliever, whereas those other three are absolutely high leverage guys. Teams need guys like Beck to win games, but guys like Beck don't bring much in trades. For the most part, teams can find their own Beck, but not everyone can find a Kahnle or Robertson.
  10. QUOTE (winninguglyin83 @ Jun 13, 2017 -> 08:56 PM) Robertson, Kahnle, Swarzak and Beck would all be upgrades for the Nats. One of these things is not like the others, one of these things just doesn't belong...
  11. I think its smart not to extend Avi, given that the underlying numbers do not support him having a massive breakout. BABIP over .400, K rate down slightly, walks down quite a bit. He's having a Dee Gordon season.
  12. Hey, I just got here, but boy do the Orioles suck now.
  13. CWS going full in on dingers this draft.
  14. QUOTE (TheTruth05 @ Jun 13, 2017 -> 11:54 AM) Any clues as to what kind? Unfortunately, no. It's funny, because MLB.com's writeup specifically praises his makeup.
  15. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jun 13, 2017 -> 12:49 PM) It feels like this draft is less about hitting big time potential and more just strengthening the backbone of the system. I'm ok with that Based on what has been said about this draft (lack of star talent, decent depth) its not a bad strategy.
  16. Yeah Hostetler really has a "type". Hopefully they grab some toolsy prep guys in rounds 3-7 to fill in the lower levels of the system. Guys like Curbelo.
  17. With a couple of safe, solid college bats in the fold, i'd love to see the Sox go risky with either Garrett Mitchell or Mason House. If available, ofc.
  18. I like Vientos, wouldn't mind that pick if he's still there.
  19. I like Burger, but would have preferred White. Seems like Bukauskas to Royals and White to Astros (just my guess).
  20. I wonder how much of the Bukauskas talk is based on real info and how much is conjecture based on previous (non-Hostetler) picks. It seems like the Sox generally have few info leaks compared to some orgs. Anyways, if it comes to Bukauskas, Kendall, or White, i'd rather have White.
  21. QUOTE (Anderdale @ Jun 10, 2017 -> 07:18 PM) Collins 0-5 with 3 k's Whoever said he might hit more as he moves up levels... seems pretty apparent at this point that he has issues with contact, and its not that he's being overly selective.
  22. Would you guys try E. White in the outfield? Seems there's a lot of talk that he could play OF, even CF. If the Sox think he's legit, i'll buy it.
  23. I think it's best for everyone involved if he isn't drafted. The last thing a young person with troubles needs is constant public scrutiny. Good luck to him and I hope he is able to move beyond his past.
  24. If Toad starts hitting dingers and gets his average over .200 there might even be a couple teams that would take him.
  25. Definitely get acquainted with Bernardo Flores. Good sleeper pick. Hickman could be interesting, haven't read reports on the stuff, old for his level but lost two years to TJ, so that would make sense.
