  1. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 11, 2014 -> 04:31 PM) SoxNet.net ‏@SoxNet 15s With today's signings, Sox look to have around just short of $400k in savings to use towards Rodon or ~$6.1million total. #MLBDraft My inclination is that a deal on the bonus amount with Rodon is in place. I just do not see how Hahn would have signed the other 9 top ten picks and them come to Boras crying poor. Boras and Hahn are too sophisticated for that. It is not the bonus any longer it is when major league service time starts. Just waiting for the pieces to fall. Remember, we also are three weeks from the International signing period that will bring more talent into the system. Strap it down friends!!!
  2. Does a future commitment to pay for college costs count against the bonus pool? For example, someone just signed for a bonus and eight semesters at Vanderbilt, that could easily be more than a $200k benefit.
  3. So what is the take on Jarvis, is he a steal for the Sox? Pitcher or hitter?
  4. Love the Rodon pick! How can the Cubs pass up on pitching? This is just great!!!! Welcome Rodon!
  5. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 5, 2014 -> 07:15 AM) For now, Anderson is a SS. We can argue about his timeline, and the possibility of Semien, Johnson and Anderson all being shifted to the outfield at some point in the near future, but Anderson has the ability/tools/range for the position...his arm isn't great for a SS, but he will have the remainder of 2014 and at least half of 2015 before they switch him (if that actually is going to happen in the future). As I argued before, they might stick him at DH a few times if his error total at SS climbs above 50, we'll see. It's also possible they'll promote him to Birmingham in July or August to prevent him from having a huge error total at one place. Sox brass want to see how well he'll do on a better-maintained infield where there aren't so many bad hops, like you typically see on an A Ball infield. At any rate, I seriously doubt they'd forgo pitching for another athletic/toolsy infielder when that's their ONE area of strength right now. And nobody's making the argument that Gordon is the best player available at 3. Excellent analysis and agree.
  6. Does anyone think that all this confirmation from the Sox brass about taking a pitcher is a smoke screen? I keep reading that the Sox are in on five pitchers and one position player. That position player seems to be Gordon and not Jackson. If seems like a foregone conclusion that Tim Anderson will not stay at SS, that is why it keeps coming to me that maybe Gordon is in the mix for tonight's pick.
  7. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jun 3, 2014 -> 09:45 PM) Cubs don't want anything to do with Kolek, apparently. Another, albeit far down, reason to take Aiken/Rodon. Interesting about Kolek and the Cubs. Kolek should be praying all day and night that he is not drafted by the Cubs, he would be called Kerry Wood II and would be cursed for the rest of his career.
  8. It will also be fascinating to watch the Cubs and Twins at 4 and 5. Because of the city and our division, we will get to see their picks a lot but let's hope we leave them in the dust. Remember the Cubs drafting Ty Griffin and Mike Harkey (I think) right ahead of the Sox. Can't wait for Thursday, great conversation everyone. Takes the mind off of the Blackhawks as well.
  9. QUOTE (southside hitman @ May 16, 2014 -> 10:14 PM) Might be time for him to get some practice in the OF. Agreed, he is on his way to CF.
  10. For what its worth, yesterday during the Sox/Giants broadcast, Hawks was very critical of taking a high school pitcher in the first round of a draft.
  11. If Hahn were to pursue him, it seems like it would be that Lars Anderson situation again.
  12. Hahn said at Sox fest that the Sox are likely to draft a pitcher. Quote from Trib: He also said “odds are” the Sox will take a pitcher with the No. 3 pick in this year’s draft, considering four of the top five candidates likely will be pitchers.
  13. I'm remaining optimistic amid all of these predications he is going to the Cubs. I remember when the Sox were a loooooongggg short to get Albert Belle and he came here. Wow. Also, didn't the Sox outbid the Cubs for Fukodome and he still went to the Cubs (thankfully). Dare to Dream, let's hope he comes to the South Side.
  14. QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Jan 4, 2014 -> 07:51 PM) I do hope Santos sticks around. Wasted too much time following the dude. I was never that excited about the return for Javy, except for the one good year TFlow had in B'Ham, nor was I sad to see him go. Stinks that we never get any real value back at all when it's obvious we're trying to unload a player, though. The pending return, or lack thereof, for ADA will be a nice little test for Hahn. Agreed, followed him a lot, as a number of others stated, wish we should have DFA'd Heath.
  15. QUOTE (ptatc @ Jan 10, 2014 -> 07:18 AM) Trading established MLB pitching for prospects can lead to disaster. I wouldn't say disapprove but it's definitely risky. If these guys don't play well, you can really set a team back. I agree with that, my philosophy is always trade pitching for pitching. The difference with Hahn is that he did trade for prospects that we control for a while instead of the aging veteran or one-year wonder like Todd Ritchie. Further, my approval for Hahn is also tied to the new CBA that has allowed Hahn or any other White Sox GM some additional options.
  16. QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Jan 9, 2014 -> 05:10 PM) He's just doing his job. Kenny has gone back to his scouting/player development roots a bit with his promotion. Funny how much hate Kenny got here and how much "better" everything is going to be under Hahn, but yet Kenny was the farm director the last time the Sox had a highly-ranked farm system & he's going to provide a lot more input on our system now than he had in the past. And IMO that's a good thing. May is/was in Australia, so he's probably watching that guy and/or dealing with something related to that team. We're maxing out our INTL budget next year & Kenny's certainly down there watching guys and talking to people. Tanaka will be in LA, but I wouldn't be shocked if Kenny's talking to the Dodgers too. I bet Kenny would love to get Kemp in here (obviously a subsidized version) and who knows what else? Dee Gordon is available I'm sure, he was highly rated recently and is a SS. Kenny's just out there gathering intelligence & laying groundwork for things. Fair enough, do not disagree with your assessment, but it was interesting with the speculation. It is exciting that the Sox are players on the international market, this new CBA rocks for us Sox fans.
  17. Not often that you get Sox tidbits from Sneed, but check out the end of this column about KW and Thomas. KW making some international trips.... http://www.suntimes.com/news/sneed/2484383...ll-of-fame.html Thoughts and speculation?
  18. This is a great signing because of the short term commitment. If for some reason the Sox are not in playoff contention next year and Downs is pitching well (and does not have a lingering injury), he will bring more assets in a trade with a contending team.
  19. There were a number of rumors or mere speculation that Hahn wanted Middlebrooks as part of the Peavy deal. So, if true, there is some history of tracking him.
  20. QUOTE (flavum @ Dec 8, 2013 -> 03:54 PM) Watch the Sox get Ichiro, because that would be such a White Sox thing to do. That thought has crept into my head as well. I know Hahn is in charge, but KW has had a man crush on Ichiro for a long time.
  21. Gardner is also in the last year of his contract, an extension would be needed if we are giving up young talent. If the Yankees would take on Alexi or John Danks in a trade then no extension needed.
  22. As others have stated, now that the Yankees have Beltran, I wonder if Gardner is an option for the Sox. If he signed a contract extension would not mind that at all.
  23. Go for the best pitcher available in the Rule 5 and see if he lights in up in Spring Training.
  24. QUOTE (scs787 @ Dec 5, 2013 -> 11:33 AM) Wouldn't hate it, but I've been coming around on Turner. I'd really love the dynamic of Turner and Micah Johnson reeking havoc at the top of the lineup. I really feel the same way. Nervous about taking a high school pitcher, barring some injury this spring, I'm for Turner as well.
  25. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 12, 2013 -> 04:38 PM) All things considered, I honestly think I'd rank signing Granderson to a multi-year deal right up there with the Sox signing Erstad. He at least has a lot of talent, but that just seems like a move that would backfire in a big way. Excellent analogy. Great point.
